| The least known of my favorite sitcoms, Playing House stars Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair, along with my favorite, Keegan Michael Key. Unfortunately, it only lasted 3 seasons on USA, but I've watched those seasons numerous times. The show is truly hilarious, but the best episode is the one guest starring Kenny Loggins in, 'Celebrate Me Scones.' The women dress up as their alter egos, Bosephus and Jandanna, in order to sneak into the concert as road crew. If you ever need to laugh, you can watch the series for free on the Roku Channel. |
I share all of your favorite shows, but I am.unfamiliar with Playing House- will need to look for that. I've heard of Curb", but have not seen enough of it to be familiar. Also something I will have to look into.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I've seen any of these recently enough to list favorites, but I will try. The shrinkage Seinfeld when they are at a lake house and George has to explain shrinkage to a girlfriend. And the masturbation bet one- too funny. Elaine, "I'm out."
We lived for the Brady Bunch. Always wanted my mom to have another baby so we could BE the Bradys, assuming it would be a boy. I loved the car accident court case when Mr. Brady drops his briefcase and reveals the truth about the guy's fake injury. The time when they thought their folks would sell the house- holy relatable. I loved the episode when the guy casts them in a laundry detergent commercial.
Another show that we always enjoy is Friends.
I think you’d appreciate the humor in Playing House. Let me know if you ever watch it as it’s free on the Roku channel online or if you have a Roku. I watch Curb on HBO Max. Our son got us a subscription to it for Christmas. I do know both of those Seinfeld episodes. Classics! Larry David, the writer of Seinfeld and star of Curb says ‘The Bet’ was his favorite episode. Elaine was such a great character. I love her and when I finish Curb I’m going to watch her in Veep.
DeleteYou mentioned Brady Bunch episodes I had forgotten about! They were all so good, weren’t they? Another one I loved was the UFO episode, but I can’t remember the premise. I just know I was fascinated with UFO’s at the time.
We watched Friends when it aired but haven’t watched it in reruns. I liked it, but didn’t love it as much as other shows. Thanks for stopping by so early!
Ha. I was in Ireland so my early visit was due to the time change. I was able to catch up on blogs sometimes if I was up in the B & B early enough or while Coach was driving - unless he needed me to navigate, which was almost always. The roads there - not our favorite part of the trip.
DeleteI hope to hear more about the trip!
DeleteOMG, I feel the same way about "The Brady Bunch"! I will sometimes find episodes on YouTube and re-watch them. I loved the house they lived it!
ReplyDeleteOver the years, I stopped watching TV and got more into movies (and series). And speaking of "Everybody Loves Raymond", I discovered that show after it went off the air and loved it. In fact, I will sometimes stream it on Tubi. I also have several DVD's of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" , which is such a hilarious show. Back in the day, I watched "Cheers" and really enjoyed it. I liked the chemistry between Shelley Long, Kirstie Alley, and Ted Danson.
And yes, there certain are shows (and episodes) I continually re-watch on "The Golden Girls", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", and "Murder, She Wrote" to name but a few. And I just recently started watching a show that was on in the late 70s early 80s, called "Family". I totally forgot how good that show was. And it had an excellent cast.
Great post, my friend! Isn't it fun to go back and re-watch certain episodes? I did that a lot during the COVID lockdown because it made life feel more normal. X
Hey Ron! I’ve been meaning to do this post forever. The Brady Bunch was such a classic American show of that time period. You know, we didn’t watch Everybody Loves Raymond when it originated aired either. I think it was during our baby phase and we just didn’t have the time. Only discovered it afterwards, like you. Curb is cracking me up. Just the character names, like Marty Funkhouser, is hilarious. Did you see the ones where Larry’s in disguise because he thinks a Muslim will kill him? I don’t even recognize him with that wig and glasses. Cracks me up!
DeleteI only watched Golden Girls and MTM of those shows you mentioned. I think I would enjoy MTM in reruns. My husband loves to watch Andy Griffith in reruns. Another classic. I remember the show Family, but never watched it. When it aired, I was not of the age to enjoy dramas. I’d probably love it now. Oh, do you remember Thirtysomething? Probably the first drama I ever loved. Hope your week is a good one. XO
Such a great post! I have never been one to watch much TV but I do remember faithfully watching Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley as a kid. In adulthood I was pretty fond of Ally McBeal, The Sopranos and The Gilmore Girls. I LOVE Modern Family and can watch it for hours. Have a great week!!
ReplyDeleteI did watch Happy Days as a kid, but I never liked Laverne and Shirley. The only other show I watched that you mentioned was Modern Family. I loved the episode with Phil as Clive Bixby. Soooo funny! My husband is currently bingeing The Sopranos when he works out and loves it.
DeleteI loved the Brady Bunch, especially since I was the same age as Marsha. She was so groovy! (LOL) I also loved Cheers, Everyone Loves Raymond, Seinfeld and also Laverne and Shirley and Rosanne. I love a funny sitcom. Love watching a show that you can just laugh at and not have to think too much about!
ReplyDeleteI think Marcia Brady was my favorite, too. She was just cool! I’m with you on enjoying a funny sitcom. I thought Alf and the Fresh Prince were both funny, back in the day.
DeleteI remember the episodes you mentioned for Cheers and The Brady Bunch. The other shows weren't shows I watched. We LOVED West Wing, believe it was the best show ever to be on tv. We've watched the entire series several times, and we're currently wrapping up watching it again. There are scenes we google or u-tube to watch repeatly.
ReplyDeleteSandy's Space
I have never watched West Wing, but I do love Rob Lowe. Maybe I can find it on YouTube.
DeleteWe hardly watch any over-the-air TV anymore (except sports), and it's been many years since we followed a show regularly. Even then, we didn't much follow the popular shows (call us 'idiosyncratic'). We were pretty devoted followers of Hill Street Blues in the 80s (Det. Belker, aka 'Dog Breath' was our favorite character), and after that ended, we latched onto Life Goes On (who couldn't love Corky, the Down Syndrome kid played by Chris Burke?), and then Star Trek: The Next Generation (I'd MUCH rather have served under Picard than Kirk; just sayin'. But Data and Worf were my favorite characters). Nowadays, pretty much all we watch is The Chosen. . .
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you enjoy dramas over sitcoms. My spouse loved Hill Street Blues. The only police drama I ever watched with him was NYPD Blue, which was excellent. And I only ever watched the original Star Trek series. It showed as reruns on Saturday afternoon when I was a kid, along with My Favorite Martian. Cheesy but entertaining.
DeleteI think Hubby and I are on our third round, maybe 4th, of watching Frasier. Niles always has the best witty zingers. We've also watched The Office, Parks and Rec, and Psych multiple times. (Betsy again. :) )
ReplyDeleteWow! I haven’t seen Frasier in ages, but I do remember enjoying it when it aired. I’m one of those weirdo’s who never liked The Office. I know, I know. I think I just disliked some of the characters so much that it ruined it for me. My son recommended Parks and Rec to me, so maybe I will give it a try.
DeleteI LOVE THIS POST.
ReplyDeleteWe loved Cheers too. It's one of my husband's favorite shows.
I also loved The Brady Bunch. I remembered the episode with the fake birthday party! And then Marcia and Greg felt bad when he was all dressed up! There are so many episodes that I loved. I also loved the Kings Island episodes too!
Seinfeld was such a good show. One of our favorites too. The Soup Nazi was such a good episode. There are so many good ones, that I can't even think of all of them. The one where Kramer fed the horse chili stands out in my mind. 🤣
Such a great post. ❤️
So glad you enjoyed this, Kari. I remember being so thrilled when the Brady’s went to Kings Island because it was in Ohio and we loved our amusement parks. I was so excited to go there myself. It is hard to come up with Seinfeld faves because there were so many good ones. My husband loves the Frogger one. I do remember the chili horse episode and thought of it when we saw the carriage rides in Central Park😄
DeleteI liked Cheers. And I watched The Brady Bunch.
ReplyDeleteI mostly watch shows like Dracula, X-Files, Supernatural, ect. But one of my favorite shows used to be Millennium.
If I watch scary shows, I can’t sleep at night. LOL
DeleteThis was so fun to read. I love all of the Raymond episodes you mentioned -- so hilarious. And there are too many great Seinfeld episodes to count! I love the one where Jerry and Elaine are talking through what it would require to add a sexual component back to their relationship. I love the one where Elaine is mistaken for a coworker named Suzie and pretends she is both people. I love the one where Jerry dates the woman who wears the same outfit over and over. And I have some favorite episodes of Friends, too -- the one with the trifle, where Rachel makes it with peas and meat. The one with the quiz, where the women lose their apartment. The one where Phoebe wants to change her name to Princess Consuela Bananahammock. So good!
ReplyDeleteYou have named some great episodes of both shows! I love that you named some of your favorite episodes too. There was a Seinfeld one that I thought was so funny, but I couldn’t find anything about it on google. Something about Kramer being scared of someone who was cutting off what he referred to as ‘noggins’ (heads)? I thought he called the culprit ‘the nogginator’ but maybe I’m imagining the whole thing. Lol!
DeleteThanks for commenting. Do you have a blog? I’d love to visit.
I haven't watched any of those, but I've seen a lot of Friends and Frasier and Sex and the City. With so many great episodes it's hard to pick out favourites. If you asked me for my favourite character, I guess Niles would be a contender. I love his laconic, witty, laid back attitude. He's a great foil for the exuberant Frasier.
ReplyDeleteNiles is a fantastic character and you’re right, the perfect foil to Frasier. You’ve chosen some classic American shows. Great characters definitely make or break a series.
DeleteWe've watched all the episodes of The Big Bang Theory many times and quote things from it to each other. That show is so funny. One of my favorite episodes is the one about the Physics Bowl and how Penny later stumps the geniuses by asking pop culture questions. "How do you know these things?" they ask her to which she replies "I go outside, I talk to people." Love that line.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a show I never got into, probably because I just plain disliked the main character. I’m weird that way! But that is indeed a great line!
DeleteThe Soup Nazi was such a good one! We watch so many Seinfield episodes over again. I love the one where George poses almost nude on the settee for a picture.
ReplyDeleteCurb Your Enthusiasm was so good, but it's been so long since I've watch that one.
I'll watch almost any episode of The Office when it comes on. I think it's such a hilarious show.
Same with Friends.
I haven't heard of the last show on your list, so I'll go look that one up. I need a new show to binge watch after I finish up Grace and Frankie this week.
Our son got us an HBO Max subscription for Christmas, so that’s why I’m just now watching Curb. I look forward to watching an episode or two a night, if nothing else is on. I’m on the Fatwah musical ones now. LOL! My husband liked The Office, but I could stand a few of the characters, so it ruined it for me.
DeletePlease do try Playing House and let me know. The Bird Bones episode is hilarious too.
I'm not sure if it is your humor or not, but we liked Entourage as well. I think that was HBO.
DeleteWe tried the first episode and it just seemed like a bunch of high school type of boys still hanging out together, being gross and immature. Did we not give it enough of a shot?
DeleteYou probably gave it enough of a shot with one episode. Either it was going to draw you in from the get go or you were bailing on it. I didn't think it was your type of humor, but I watched because I was sucked in with Jeremy Pivon's agent character. He was the jerk you hated to like but did anyway. I find that I usually like a lot of what HBO has to offer, but I'll tell you that I didn't like: The Wire, which everyone seemed to love, and I never got into GOT which was huge.
DeleteThe only shows I’ve liked so far is Curb, White Lotus, and Succession. Tried Entourage, Silicon Valley, and Righteous Gemstones and didn’t like any of them. Going to give VEEP a try next.
DeleteI watched all of those shows and I am big fan of Seinfeld. I am re-watching it right now and thought about doing Cheers after I was finished. I have also been watching old sketches from Key & Peele for laughs.
ReplyDeleteKey and Peele are one of the best comedy duos ever! The one about the substitute teacher (or first day of school?) had me in tears the first time I saw it.
DeleteThis is such a fun post, like all of your posts.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same taste in TV and I'm laughing so hard thinking about Curb, as I don't remember that episode, but I'm still cracking up at that line as it's one of the funniest shows ever. My favorite line that I like to repeat is Larry David saying Pretty Good, Pretty, Pretty Good over and over. The characters and writing on that show are second to none.
Since we like so many of the same shows, I must find Playing House as I've never heard of it.
Cheers was so good. Everybody Loves Raymond...I still crack up at the reruns. I think my fave might have been The Suitcase. When Ray gets home for a trip, he and Deb both ignore his full suitcase on the stair landing until Deb loses her shit. Such typical marriage scenarios. Lord, his parents were terrible...can you imagine dealing with them as neighbors?
I quote Friends quite often and have so many favorite episodes that I can't pick a favorite. (But I do crack up thinking of the one where Joey tried to put on ALL of Chandlers clothes in layers to get him back for wearing something of his)
I loved The Brady Bunch so much as a kid. I admired them having a stereotypical family, even though there was divorce. I was also a huge fan of their house and I always dreamed of having a house like theirs...right down the the groovy kitchen!
Isn’t Curb hilarious. The Jeff Green character kills me. The pretty good thing is so funny how they throw that in, along with the eye stare thing. Of course I remember The Suitcase! Yes, so typical of marriage situations. The Brady Bunch house was amazing to this girl who grew up in a 3BR little ranch. And having a housekeeper!
DeleteTell me if you ever try Playing House. It is good stuff! Hope you’re feeling better every day!
"No soup for you!"
ReplyDeleteI love "The Soup Nazi" episode and "The Bottle Deposit" is very funny, too.
I'm not much of a sitcom watcher, but some of my favorites include "The Odd Couple," especially the episode when Oscar runs for city council. I've also enjoyed "Mash" and "Get Smart," which goes way back!
I don't know "Playing House," but I check it out.
Great post!
You named some old classics! I remember watching Get Smart when I was very young and getting a kick out of his telephone shoe (or some sort of spying device). Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI like season #1 episode 12, Prophecy Girl, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar was so good in that. I also like Season #3 Episode 9 All That Josh, of the Magicians when they sing Under Pressure.
ReplyDeleteThose are tv shows I’ve never seen, but I love that you have favorite episodes!
DeleteAnother fun nostalgia post, Bijoux and I also enjoyed Cheers and the Brady Bunch but I can't recall a specific episode. Other sitcoms we enjoyed were Frazier and WKRP. My husband was a Seinfeld fan but I didn't really watch it or the Golden Girls. I am not familiar with Curb Your Enthusiasm and Playing House. Are these are network TV or cable?
ReplyDeleteThey are both cable shows, but easily found online now. My family watched WKRP growing up and really enjoyed it. Frazier was a great show, too.
DeleteI love Seinfeld! There are just too many good episodes to name. My all-time favourite is probably the one with crazy Joe Devola, when Elaine is dating him, and there is the opera with the tragic clown. She goes to his apartment and he's got a darkroom and a whole wall devoted to photos he secretly took of her. When he asks if she wants to see the darkroom she says "um, no thank you. I'm a dayyyy person." I say "I'm a dayyyy person" all the time. We also say "not that there's anything wrong with that" and "these pretzels are making me thirsty" all the time. Also, any time I bake a pie I say "mmm floor pie" from the Simpsons. I wasn't a big fan of Friends, but there are two lines from early seasons that we quote all the time. One "Neat! I'm going to die alone!" and "that's it that's all you wrote you're the worst writer in the whole world!" Lol, so dumb and yet so funny.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about crazy Joe Devola! That was indeed a great one. I love that you use so many of the quotes from these shows. You would be a fun person to hang out with 😄 Welcome back!
DeleteI remember the Brady Bunch and watched it some when it was originally one. I never been one to watch multiple times except Mash and Andy Griffin. But mostly my life hasn't been controlled by TV.
ReplyDeleteMy husband enjoys Andy Griffith and Mayberry RFD when he’s working out.
DeleteI've been rewatching "Cheers" for about a year now, basically whenever I'm walking on the treadmill, so that episode is pretty fresh (I'm up to the beginning of Season 7). Such a classic! "The Puffy Coat" is another great "Seinfeld" episode, but yeah...you can' top "The Soup Nazi." Glad you got into "Curb Your Enthusiasm," too! Hard to pick a fave, but the one where Larry gives a ride to a prostitute so he can drive in the carpool lane is hard to beat.
ReplyDeleteThe Puffy Coat was a great one, for sure! The prostitute in the carpool lane was hilarious. And any scene with Leon cracks me up. I love people who just tell it like it is. I wish his sister would make another appearance because she was hilarious, too.
DeleteFriends is my all-time favorite TV show. I love all of the Thanksgiving episodes (of course), the ones where people find out about Monica and Chandler, the one where Joey teaches Mr. Treager to dance, the one with Joey's bag, the one with all the cheesecakes, and the one where Joey and Chandler leave Ben on the bus. There are actually very few Friends episodes I don't like.
ReplyDeleteI truly cannot stand Seinfeld, but I know Nick likes the soup Nazi one.
Wow, you really do like Friends! I don’t remember any of those episodes, but I only watched them once, when they were airing the first time. I remember you saying you hated Seinfeld. My parents did, too. They called it, “ New York humor” which always cracked me up.
DeleteWhen I was a kid, I would always watch Cheers. When I was a big kid in my late twenties, I'd watch Friends (still do), some time after that Two and a Half Men and the Big Bang Theory.
ReplyDeleteHope you're doing fine,
Blue
Hi Blue! Two and a Half Men was very funny. I haven’t seen that show in ages. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteDon't mention it :)
DeleteI loved so many of the shows you mentioned. But Friends is something I watch all the time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
Delete'No soup for you!' LOL! That's a good one. We really enjoyed Seinfeld. Can't remember a specific fav episode, but lots of lines come to mind... helloooo Newman, dingo ate your baby, spare a square, etc... We were into so many shows! We did watch Cheers, Friends, Will & Grace, Alice, All in the Family, MASH, MTM, Frasier, etc. and many more. Didn't watch Everybody Loves Raymond (maybe an episode or two) or Curb Your Enthusiasm, or Playing House. Totally loved The Brady Bunch!! Actually, the other day I caught part of an episode. It was the one with Marcia dating Harvey Klinger, the kid into bugs, who Mike has to have a talk with when he wants to go steady. haha We'll still watch Gilligan's Island, that's on MeTV too. I also loved The Munsters.
ReplyDeleteWe recently watched 'Doc Martin' again, which was a British medical comedy drama that ran for about 10 seasons. (I'm having a deja vu, maybe I told you that on another post?) and we were going to re-watch Schitt's Creek but can't get all the seasons on any one channel. We do watch t.v. a lot... movies, series... from our recliners... like Joey and Chandler when they got their La-Z-Boys. haha!
What a fun post!
Lol, I totally remember the Harvey Klinger episode. They were all classics. Great writers for the Brady Bunch. My son discovered Gilligan’s Island when he was around 10 years old and he loved it. That cracked me up. I’ve never heard of Doc Martin. I tried Schitt’s Creek once and didn’t like it, but people have told me I didn’t give it enough of a chance.
Delete
