If one were to believe Reddit, celebrity (be they actors or reality stars) sightings happen all the time. Possibly only if you live in NYC or southern California? I have never encountered a celebrity 'in the wild.' I am not counting scheduled events (I have been up close with John Glenn) or sports figures (I've met a few MLB players and seen football players/sportscasters I can't even name, but that my husband pointed out). However, my husband and my daughters have some memorable stories I thought I'd share here. (Pictures pulled off of the world wide web)
 |
Around 1990, my husband was in Manhattan on business and rode an elevator in a law office building with Kathleen Turner. This was during the height of her movie stardom. He said no one acknowledged who she was and everyone stared straight ahead, because 'professionalism.'
|
 |
In 1984, while my husband was living in Brooklyn and working at the World Trade Center, he saw Pierce Brosnan on the streets of Manhattan. This was during the Remington Steele years. I don't think my spouse was as excited as I would have been.

By far, my favorite story is when my husband was dining at a small restaurant in NYC in the early 1990's and was seated at a table next to John F. Kennedy, Jr. We were married at the time and I was sooo jealous. My husband was at a business dinner with numerous associates and the women at his table were dying. One went to the pay phone in the restaurant (pre cell phone era) and called her mother!!!! LOL! The best part of the story is that JFK, Jr. had a key ring full of keys attached to the belt loop on his pants, similar to a janitor. RIP John John.

Does anyone remember Slim Whitman? He was best known to our generation for the Ronco television ads, selling his albums. Also, he yodeled. He became popular with the teens in an ironic way, so when he was playing a concert at the famous (here) Richfield Coliseum, my husband and his high school cohorts attended. Afterwards, one of them got the idea to go to the area of the venue where the artists leave and that's where they see Slim get into his limousine. Being teenage boys, they followed the 'Slimo' (as they called it) to the hotel where Slim was staying nearby. When the driver got out to open Slim's door in the back, one of my husband's buddies jumped in. (You can't make this stuff up.) By the end of the night, all four of them had sat in the back of Slim Whitman's limo, obtained his autograph on dollar bills, and chatted him up. According to my husband, Slim acknowledged that the kids their age at the concerts were mostly there for laughs, but that he didn't care and was just glad for the support. My husband still has that dollar bill in a frame, somewhere in a box in the basement, which he pulls out whenever someone new hasn't heard the story!

| It's 2000 and Britney Spears is the Pop Princess. We played her CD on repeat in our 2000 Odyssey. My girls were 10 and 8 at the time. My husband was offered free tickets in the company loge for her Oops . . . I Did It Again tour. Let's just say that hubby was as excited as the girls about this stroke of luck. Meanwhile, I was attending a Meet the Teachers night with my younger son, so I missed the fun. As is typical of my spouse, they arrived very early for the concert and were walking around the executive suite level, when they turned a corner and my husband literally bumped into Ms. Spears. Like, he physically ran into her. Her entourage quickly moved her away, but my girls talked about when Dad almost knocked down Britney Spears for quite a while after. |

| My oldest daughter spent the summer of 2006 volunteering at the big hospital downtown (if you know, you know). Being a Junior Ambassador involved doing just about anything, and one of those things was escorting visitors through the maze of buildings that comprise the hospital. In orientation, they were told they were forbidden to take pictures, ask for autographs, etc. if they ever recognized anyone famous. (Note: Lots of Saudi Arabian princes, etc. have operations here, not that they'd be recognized by American teenagers.) She was chosen to be part of the escort team for John Mayer, who was there to do a Make A Wish concert for a young female cancer patient and the approximately 25 other young cancer patients being treated. This involved greeting him when he exited his limo and guiding him to the building/floor where he would perform. The best part was that she got to carry John Mayer's guitar case (photo above, not necessarily said guitar case, but let's pretend!) She said he was super nice to all of the volunteers, asking them their names and ages, and commended them on their service. And, they were able to stay for the concert. My daughter is a fan for life. |
Have you ever met or seen a famous person out in public?
"My husband still has that dollar bill in a frame, somewhere in a box in the basement, which he pulls out whenever someone new hasn't heard the story!"
ReplyDeleteWhat a GREAT celeb story!!!! And yes, I DO remember Slim Whitman. When I was a kid, I remember my parents listening to him on the radio - "Indian Love Call" is one in which he yodeled!
I'm in awe at how many celebs your husband has encountered. He's a like celebrity magnet! LOL!\
And what a great story about your daughter meeting John Mayer.
JFK, Jr. (and also his mother, Jackie) used to have lunch at The Carlyle hotel in NYC quite frequently. I know people who would see them walking to and from. He was one of those guys who freeing walked all over the city without any security with him. For all his "celebritism" he was very down-to-earth.
LOVED this post! And yes, as you know from posts I've shared on my blog, being that I was involved in the theater for so many years and met quite a few celebs. One of my faves was Liberace. And I also did Tom Brokaw's hair and makeup for a television show. But most of the celebs I've encountered were Broadway stars.
Have a FAB weekend, my friend! X
Good morning, Ron! Yes! I know Indian Love Call. His songs were . . . Interesting!π€£ My husband tells the story much better than I can (obviously, because he lived it). I can’t believe they did that, but it was different times, before so much security, etc.
DeleteI can’t think of any celebrity death that hit me as hard as JFK, Jr. He was just so likable. The sorrow that the Kennedy family has been through is unimaginable. But I will always crack up at the ring of keys. You don’t get more down-to-earth than that!
I have always enjoyed your famous people posts, esp. Liberace. And Tom Brokaw is an American icon. Thanks for stopping by so early. Have a lovely weekend!
The only time I have seen a celebrity up close and personal was when I waited at the stage doors after seeing a Broadway show. Sometimes, the "stars" of the show would graciously sign my Playbill. That's how I saw Glenn Close, Henry Fonda and a few others. Some of the performers have passed on but I still have those signed Playbills.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been exciting to get their autographs. I’ve only been to two Broadway shows and the only ‘star’ I knew in them was Bebe Neuwirth, who was fabulous in her role.
DeleteThis was a fun blog post to read. Your husband has been lucky to have spotted so many celebs. I would have LOVED to be seated by JFK, Jr. I was heartbroken when he died. The sadness and loss that family has gone through is just too much.
ReplyDeleteIn the late 1980's my husband and I saw Chubby Checker at a movie theater in Ft. Myers, Florida. He walked in the same time we did and was sat one row in front of us. Also around that time I was working as a waitress at a country club and waited on Buddy Hackett who was interesting to say the least.
I remember when I was about 15 or 16 my dad came home excited that he ran into Willie Nelson at the golf course in Decatur, Illinois. He was in town for a concert. My dad said he was so nice and just chatted away like he wasn't famous at all.
I was also so sad about JFK, Jr. What a tragic family and I feel for his wife's family, too. Wow! You saw some old time stars back then. Buddy Hackett, I imagine to be obnoxious! LOL! What a cool story about your dad and Willie Nelson. Thanks for sharing it here.
DeleteI remember Slim Whitman but don't really know why I do. I've seen lots of celebrities in the wild, usually in airports. The most *interesting* one was Rob Lowe in the Dayton OH airport. My goodness to the gracious that man is handsome!
ReplyDeleteI’m sure you know Slim from those Ronco or K-Tel commercials. As much as I’ve kept my eyes peeled in airports like LA and Miami, I’ve never recognized anyone. I would have been so pumped to see Rob Lowe. How has he not aged???
DeleteWow. These are some fun stories. I love your husband almost knocking Brittney over. Oops - he almost did that.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in college in the early 90s, I was in the student section at the Notre Dame game. I turned around, probably because one of my friends told me to, and directly behind me in a baseball hat was Julia Roberts. She was with The Sutherland actor, who I think she might have been dating. I must've gawked for a moment, because he got in my face and said, WHY DON'T YOU WATCH THE GAME? IT'S A REALLY GOOD GAME. Well, only students are allowed in the student section, so I turned back around and said to my friends WHY DON'T YOU GO ENJOY THE GAME SOMEWHERE THAT ISN'T THE STUDNET SECTION. A wise-ass till the end. Not sure he even heard me.
I used to babysit for the punter for the Chicago Bears when I was in high school. He and his wife are still my close friends. Amazing people. They live in Texas now and if Coach teaches in Dallas I hop on the plane to go with him and visit them. Anyway, when I was a senior in college, he got my bestie and I tickets to the Bears game. We drove in from South Bend. Our tickets were in the family section with all the wives, etc. After the game, he took us to an after party with the rest of the team. Michael Jordan showed up, and my buddy introduced us and took a photo of bestie and I with Michael. That isn't technically in public, I guess.
Julia Roberts is HUGE, like a huge sighting! But how bizarre that they were sitting in the student section. What was that about? Did they think students wouldn’t recognize them? And Michael Jordan?? I’m not a sports fan, but that is HUGE as well!
DeleteI don't know why, but I can't stop laughing at "Also, he yodeled." I mean. This could be the title of a really great book. Or poem. I don't know but I want to incorporate that sentence into my life every single day. Also, he yodeled.
ReplyDeleteYour husband is quite the celebrity spotter, with your daughter following in his footsteps! I'm impressed by every single one (also, he yodeled). I have met/ spotted only a couple of celebrities in my life, one being Colin Machrie in Vegas, and I also met Jim Cuddy and Kelly Hrudy and you know what, I'm just realizing how Canadian this whole story is. Jim Cuddy though. He is a huge crush for me and we had our photo taken together and eeeeeeee.
Nicole, you get me, you really get me! Bahahaha! I’m glad you enjoy my humor with the “Also, he yodeled,” because how bizarre is that? I know who Colin Machrie is because we always watched any Drew Carey (Clevelander) show, so Whose Line Is It Anyway? was a favorite here. Speaking of Drew, my brother-in-law’s wife was at a party in college where Drew showed up. She was not impressed at the time and thought he was conceited and this was way before he became famous. I had to look up Jim Cuddy and I can see how he was hot when he was young.
DeleteRonco! OMG, that took me back to the old TV commercials! I definitely remember Slim Whitman! (I also remember Richfield Coliseum, too. ❤️) I love how your husband and his friends jumped into Slim's "slimo."
ReplyDeleteI've only had a few celebrity encounters, most of which occurred in the 1990s and on one particular night. I was at a local club in the Chicago suburbs, not far from where we now live, in 1993. We saw Jim Harbaugh (who was playing for the Chicago Bears at the time), Darnell Wolford (also for the Bears), and Scottie Pippen (who played for the Bulls) all in one night at this club. They all arrived separately as well. Funny story: the friend I was with that night used to be Darnell Wolford's nanny. When he entered through the door and saw her, he immediately left because he was with someone who wasn't his wife. Grrr.
I loved all of your celebrity sighting stories. ❤️
I’m so glad you know who Slim is, plus Richfield Coliseum!!! My college graduation was there! My husband saw so many concerts there. I’m not a sports person, but I do recognize Harbaugh and Pippen’s names. Omg on the cheater, though.
DeleteJFK Jr had ladies giving him their key and he saved them?
ReplyDeleteI guess we will never know!
DeleteWow. These are some fun stories! I love all of them. Slim Whitman's Secret Love and Rose Marie songs have been loved here. I have listened them couple of times but my English teacher always listening him. Greetings. Have a wonderful october to your family and you.
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you’ve enjoyed Slim Whitman’s music there. Happy Autumn!
DeleteVirtually all of my 'celebrity sightings' have been athletes. Of course, I live in Magic Johnson's hometown, so I've crossed paths with him a few times (not as many as you might suppose, tho). I remember encountering Larry Csonka in an airport once (the man is HUGE!), and I was stopped at a traffic light next to Jack Morris once. My favorite was a few years ago, our son, who works at a fancy restaurant in Ann Arbor, set us up for an over-the-top (at least, by our standards) anniversary dinner at his restaurant. Our table was across the aisle from Dave Bing (Pistons Hall-of-Famer and former mayor of Detroit), his wife, and two kids who I assume were his grandchildren. When we related this to our kids (including the one who set the dinner up for us), they all said, "Who's Dave Bing?" Fame is fleeting. . .
ReplyDeleteIf you’re a sports fan, then those would be some exciting sightings! As a kid, we saw Larry Csonka at a restaurant in Stow, Ohio (I believe that’s where he was from). My dad thought that was pretty cool. We also saw Jesse Owens at a Big Boy restaurant in Akron (I was too young to know who he was) but I remember being there. And yeah, my kids often don’t know who people are!
DeleteOne of Al Kaline's sons lived in the same dorrn complex as me back in my college days, and once or twice, we saw Al and his wife dropping their son off at the dorm. . .
ReplyDeleteThat is cool, too!
DeleteWhen I was about 10-11 years old I met Marlo Thomas when our campfire girls group was doing a fundraiser for ALSAC. She was so pretty and I was in awe! I also met Meredith Baxter at a women's show where she was promoting her skin care line. Also, Jeff Daniels is a friend of my old supervisor and although I didn't formally meet him, I saw him many times at the U of M Cafeteria! That's about it!
ReplyDeleteThose are some definite Wow factor celebs! I remember thinking Marlo was so pretty when I was a young girl and Meredith was great as the mom on Family Ties. Very cool celebs!!!
DeleteKnew them all except the yodeler haha that is neat though that he got the dollar bill autographed. Good he didn't go injuring Spears either, the fans may have rioted
ReplyDeleteYou are too young for Slim Whitman, I suppose. I mean, my grandpa was a fan! Yes, hurting Britney’s knee or something would have been bad news.
DeleteI have had a few cool celebrity sightings in the wild. My favorite was sharing an elevator with Flava Flav at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. He was wearing the giant clock around his neck and everything. Tara asked if she could take a pic with him and he said it would cost $5! But then he relented. Still not sure if he was kidding or not. I also rang up a purchase for Josh Saviano (Paul from "The Wonder Years") when I worked at a Brookstone in Santa Clara. He was buying a gift for his grandparents. How wholesome is that? Peggy Fleming also stopped by the store, and we always saw 49ers players.
ReplyDeleteBruce Springsteen doesn't count since I won the privilege of meeting him. Still ranks as one of the most exciting days of my life.
I definitely had a thing for Ms. Spears way back in the day. I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that now, but whatevs!
Omg, how hilarious about Flava Flav!!! As many times as we’ve stayed on the strip, I have never seen anyone famous. Maybe they all have big sunglasses? That’s an amazing story, Mark. And how cool about Saviano from the Wonder Years? Meeting Springsteen is definitely exciting. And I’m just going to put it out there. . . As crazy as Britney has become, we still turn up her hits on Pop Rocks! And she was a gorgeous girl, for sure.
DeleteI actually asked for Josh's autograph. He signed it, "May all your years be wonder-ful." Something tells me he didn't just come up with that on the spur of the moment, ha.
DeleteThat’s just awesome!
DeleteI used to see a lot of celebs when I lived in London, but of course Belfast doesn't see so many. If I see a celeb I tend to keep my distance because probably they get a bit tired of random strangers striking up conversation or pointing them out to whoever they're with. I remember meeting the Labour MP Tony Benn when he did a signing session at the bookshop I was working in. He had all sorts of amusing anecdotes about other celebs - and even the Queen.
ReplyDeleteI bet London is a hot spot for celebrities from around the world.
DeleteJOHN JOHN!!! π©
ReplyDeleteI love all your shares. So funny about your husband almost taking down Britney. Did she say: Hey, I'm Britney, Bitch!?
My husband and I were in an airport elevator with country music star Lori Morgan in the early 90's.
We were in the Delta Lounge with Kathie Lee Gifford a few years ago (four?) and she was so sweet. She was actually drinking wine...and it was in the morning. So, just like she was with Hoda on TV!!
We saw Kelly Clarkson just when she was making a name for herself in NYC. She was coming out of a building with her body guards and entourage and I could not believe how SMALL she was. Remember they kept saying she was heavy in her early days? NOPE. Lies. all lies.
We were having dinner at a restaurant in Vegas many years ago. (20?) And at a table next to us was Steffi Graff and Andre Agassi. At another table, the same night in the same restaurant was Johnny Galecki from Roseanne, long before Big Bang Theory. No one seemed to bother any of them, especially me. π€
If I can't mention musicians (there's a lot of those), that's all I can think of in the celebrity arena.
I'm sure there are more, but my brain is toast. I'm so happy to hear that John Mayer was nice as I would imagine that to be very true.
π€£π€£π€£ No, that was prior to Britney using that phrase! But that’s hilarious, Suz! You are my kind of gal. That’s pretty cool about seeing Gifford in the Delta Lounge, having her morning beverage of choice. You’ve seen a good variety of celebs in the wild. Thanks for your Mayer concert post, because it pushed me to finally write this post.
DeleteI'm still giggling about your husband going to see Britney. ππ I just remembered that I was in line behind a Big guy years ago at the grocery store....I noticed he had a gigantic ring on and then realized it was Mike Ditka and his Super Bowl ring. He lives here in our town.
DeleteI was still cracking up this morning over your Britney comment! π€£ I’m impressed you recognized a football player. We had a Browns player on our street, but I had never heard of him and could pass him on the sidewalk and not know who he was.
DeleteIf not for the HUGE ring, I would never have given him a second glance. :)
DeleteSlim Whitman AND Pierce Brosnan?!
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous of your husband! I loved Slim Whitman in the ironic way and I'd a big fan of Pierce Brosnan. And eating next to JFK Jr. and his keyring is pretty impressive, too.
As far as nearly trampling Brittany Spears, well, better him than me.
I don't know much about John Mayer (YouTubing him right now) but that's such a nice story about your daughter carrying his guitar case!
My celebrity sightings include Muhammed Ali, Howard Stern, Garrison Keillor, Willem Dafoe and Jerry Orbach.
Great post and Slim Whitman rules!
Yes, my husband has seen a strange compilation of celebs! John Mayer is a great singer/songwriter, but I think he got himself into trouble by dating too many celebrity women. He should have given some Ohio girls a chance π€
DeleteYou’ve seen some greats, for sure. I would have expected no less from a Brooklyn Boy! Have a great week, Rob.
That is so cool. You all have had quite a few run ins. The only celebrity I've seen was Ice-T and his wife when they were coming out of The Mirage Hotel. I walked right by him and he just smiled at me. I don't even think he had a body guard with him.
ReplyDeleteIce-T on the Strip is a classic, Mary. Thanks for sharing it with us!
DeleteI for some reason can't comment with my blogger account here, but I haven't personally seen any celebs out in the wild. Indiana isn't overrun with them here LOL. I know Taylor Swift was here a few times because her brother went to college by my house, and so did Bon Jovi when his son was here. Regis was always a staple at Notre Dame too, but I wasn't lucky enough to ever see any of them. When the Hummer plant was open, Arnold Schwarzenegger (sp?) wanted a tour and they asked my uncle (who was an employee there) to help body guard him during his visit. Said he was shorter in person than the movies made him appear and he was a real jerk to everyone.
ReplyDeleteYeah, we don’t get a lot of celebs in Ohio either, but sometimes movies are made in Cleveland and we also get lots of celebs going to Cavs games when they play a NY or LA team. Omg on the Arnoldπ I remember reading a Reddit post once about the worst celebrity meetings and for the most part, people said all the celebs they’ve met were super nice, but the stand out worst one was David Crosby (of Crosby Stills and Nash). I guess he’s a real winner.
DeleteI don't know much about him, but I googled him and he just looks like he'd be grouch!
DeleteExactly! I remember the person who complained about him had been a security person for decades, so had contact with tons of celebs. Seemed verifiable to me!
DeleteWow your husband sure gets around. I think I would want to go with him on all his business travels, lol. Pierce Bronson....oh I would have loved that. My one and only was meeting Mario Andretti at a restaurant in Cleveland after a car race.
ReplyDeleteTraveling Suitcase
Oh, that’s a very cool celebrity meet up, Sandy.
DeletePierce Brosnan!! NICE!
ReplyDeleteThe only siting that comes to mind right now was when Ron and I were in Philly one afternoon many years ago and saw a crowd coming by. In a convertible riding down the street was O.J. Simpson. He wasn't driving so a lot of people were approaching the car for autographs. I told Ron to get one. He tried but couldn't. I ran over to the car, and he took the dollar bill from me and signed it and said something to the effect of... sorry, it's not so neat, since the car is moving. I actually JUST came across it maybe a week or two ago.
What what what??? The Juice? Was he looking for Nicole Brown Simpson’s murderer or was that long before the big fiasco?π€£ that is actually an amazing signature to have and is probably worth some money.
DeleteI'm pretty sure it was AFTER the murders. Crazy, right!? lol
DeleteTotally!!!
DeleteI've never met a famous person "in the wild" either, but Hubby got to shake Jim Caviezal's hand in Germany once! The Spears story is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteDang it. P.S. Betsy! ;)
ReplyDeleteHey Betsy! I’d have thought living in CA, you’d see celebrities out and about. Maybe the sunglasses help them blend in,
Delete
