Let’s Talk Tuesday: The Ghost Story

If you would have asked me 10 years ago if I believed in ghosts and other paranormal activity, I would have laughed and just said, “No.” I’ve always been a skeptic and I still have never personally experienced anything in that realm. Yet, a number of people I’m close with have revealed some of their own experiences to me, in the last few years. And my blogger friend Mark wrote a guest post about his own encounter here.

The story I’m about to tell took place in September 2022. Allow me to set the stage: My mother-in-law had been suffering from Alzheimer’s since about 2011 and by 2018 had no idea who any of us were. She was living in a memory care unit when my husband got the call that she had become unresponsive and was taken to the ER. All five of her children as well as various grandchildren spent that day at the hospital, coming and going in different shifts, not knowing how serious her condition was. My husband and his brother are close, so they went together to visit her, but she never responded to their presence. However, just two hours later, my husband’s sister (the only sister he speaks with) called to say that Mom woke up and was cognizant of not only my sister-in-law’s (and her husband’s) presence, but seemed to recognize them and laugh along with some of their family stories. Hearing this, my husband and his brother decided to go back the next morning.

Sadly, my husband woke up the following morning to a text from his sister that Mom had passed away at 12:05 a.m. It was shocking but also not shocking, if you know what I mean. We spent the following week preparing for the funeral, burial, and repast.

Fast forward a month later. We got together in Ohio wine country with my husband’s brother and sister and their spouses and that’s when my brother-in-law dropped his bomb on us, so to speak. The night he and my husband visited their mother, he said he and his wife were in bed and he was awakened by the clicking sound that their bedroom door makes when being opened. They are empty nesters during the school year, so no one else was in the house. He said he sat up and saw a glowing orb of light walk between the dresser and the bed and go right up to his side of the bed and stop, hovering next to him. Then the orb glided back the other way and entered the master bathroom.

At this point, he gained his senses enough to wake up his wife and tell her what happened. They both got out of bed and began turning on all the lights in the house, including the basement. He said he checked every door lock and finding nothing disturbed, he turned the lights off and went back upstairs to their bedroom. That’s when he decided to look in the bathroom and although he saw nothing, he said that every hair on his arms and back of his neck stood up. His wife did not experience this and convinced him to just get back in bed and go to sleep. He looked at the clock and it was 12:15 a.m., about 10 minutes since he had awakened from the door click. And as you’ve already read, the exact time my mother-in-law died, which he learned in the morning.

To say that I was freaked out by this story is putting it mildly. First, because my brother-in-law is a scientist, an agnostic, and just about the last person I’d expect to witness a ghost. I think he was so disturbed that it took him a month to tell any of us. Secondly, I was a little concerned that my recently departed MIL might decide to pay my husband a visit. I was actually afraid to go to bed alone for about a week and spent a few nights pretty fearful.

It’s been a year, so I’m hoping we are in the clear, but there are so many questions. Was my MIL checking on her son before she departed? And why that particular child out of the five? Or was my brother-in-law just dreaming even though he is 100% convinced he was wide awake? We all have differing opinions. I'm a believer, just from knowing my BIL, and hearing similar descriptions of the white, glowing orb that vaguely resembles a person walking.

Have you or a close friend/family member experienced a ghost?

  1. First, fantastic ghost story! I got chills when you mentioned the timeframe ---

"it was 12:15 a.m., about 10 minutes since he had awakened from the door click."

    WOW!

I do believe in ghosts. But then again, I've always been open to all kinds of esoteric stuff (ghosts, UFO's, past lives, energy, etc.)

And yes, I have experienced a ghost. It was back when I lived in Orlando, Florida and was visiting my landlords, who owned the house in which I lived in their garage apartment for 12 years.

I was sitting in their dinning room one night, talking with the wife. When suddenly, out of the corner of my left eye, I saw what looked like a shadowy blur, quickly descending from the staircase that led to and from the bedrooms on the upper floor. It totally startled me because it happened so fast. Yet, I could see that within the shadowy blur, the image of a man with dark hair, dark eyes, and a chiseled dark beard. And as soon as the image got to the bottom of the stairs, it quickly disappeared.

I wasn't afraid, it just startled me. And I got a "sense" that the image I saw was perhaps a previous owner (or occupant), which at that time was an 86-year-old house.

And another time, after both my parents passed away, I saw their images standing next to me in a park one afternoon. They stood side by side, holding hands, smiling at me. I didn't hear what they said to me, but I could "feel" what they were saying. Which was, "We're together again. And we're happy". And then their images disappeared.

FABULOUS post, my friend. I LOVE topics like this!

    Have a great Tuesday! X

  2. Good morning, Ron! You know, I don’t recall you ever telling those ghost stories on your blog. So interesting! Did you ask your landlord about the ghost or were you too startled to process it right away? I’m so fascinated by the visit from your parents in the park. Did the park have any significance to them? That must have been a comfort to see them together and also get a message from them. Wonderful!

I was at my parent’s condo alone last week, doing some cleaning. It was the exact day of the 5th anniversary of my father’s death. I had a good cry and talked to him, but there was no appearance. This time of year is hard, with the holidays approaching.

Thanks for stopping by so early and have a wonderful week. XO

    1. No, I never mentioned to my landlords about the ghost because they were the kind of people who I think would freak out about it. And no, the park had no significance to my parents, other than we were all born in Philly. It happened not long after my mother passed in 2012. I know you remember that time because I posted about it on my blog. I can't believe it's been 12 years!?

" I had a good cry and talked to him, but there was no appearance. This time of year is hard, with the holidays approaching."

I've done the same thing myself. In fact, I did that not long after I went back to my childhood home in June. Again, I think it was all part of my healing and letting it go.

    2. I cannot believe it’s been 12 years already! It’s crazy how fast time is moving. I’ve been very emotional, cleaning out my parents’ home. Even seeing my Dad’s handwriting will make me tear up. Thank you for saying that about healing and letting go. It’s very much needed for all of us. ❤️

  3. Oh, that is spooky! I haven't experienced a ghost myself but I do think "why not?" Like, there's a lot we don't know about the world, who knows what is visiting us from other realms. I have an open mind to it. The night my FIL died my older son woke up screaming in the middle of the night. He was 12, so this was very unusual. We found out the next day that he had passed away at that exact time.

    2. He didn't remember it at all!

  4. I loved this post! I am a firm believer that loved ones can and do visit after they are gone. I've had several visits from my mom after she passed away. One that particularly stands out is one night about a month or so after my mom died, I was sitting in bed reading a book. I was just starting to doze off when I saw and felt my mom kiss my cheek. I startled awake! Not only did I feel the kiss but I saw her in my peripheral vision! I sat there awake for quite a while still feeling that kiss. It was pretty awesome and very comforting to me.

  5. Have you or a close friend/family member experienced a ghost? I may have experienced a ghost, but it also may have been just greenish lights from outside shimmering inside. Never concluded one way or another, but I didn't find it spooky, just reassuring actually that there might be more to life than we know.

  6. That is a great story. When I worked at the old hospital I was leaving one night walking down a long hallway. At the end of this hallway were two doors out to the parking lots on both sides. When I was about 6 feet away from the doors a man passed through from one door to the other but 20 seconds later when I went out this same door there was no one in the parking lot. I looked all around and he was just gone. I've often wondered if that was a ghost. Also, I'm not sure if our cat is just crazy or if he sees things we don't. He will sit up with both front paws like he is reaching for someone that isn't there and he'll stare at the ceiling yet we see nothing. I'm hoping he is just crazy.

  7. I LOVE GHOST STORIES.

The first question I have is, "Where in the hell is Ohio wine country??" Because I want to go!

Second, I totally think your brother-in-law was visited by his mother-in-law.

(Reading the comment above) Because of all the deaths, I think there are a lot of ghost stories in hospitals. When Mike was in the ER last month, I literally thought about how many people had to be dying while we were there.

Have I ever been visited by a ghost? I don't want to manifest being visited by a ghost, so no comment. 🤣

    1. Ohio wine country is up be Lake Erie on the east side, north of I-90. We’ve been going up there since the ‘80’s, when there was only one! Lol! Now there are about 25 total of varying degree of wine decency. Some are really cool, like one in an old church (google South River winery, Ohio).

Yeah, I do think my BIL had some sort of visit from his mother. It’s all too coincidental with the timing and him not knowing she had passed. My sister-in-law’s husband (I know these in-law things are confusing) had a similar experience when his mother died when he was a teen.

I’m hoping to never have any paranormal visits, ever. I have enough trouble going down to my basement🤣🤣🤣

  8. Not a ghost; I prefer to tell it as an angel story. . .
Years ago, a friend and I were driving late at night on the way to my parents' house. I was driving his car, since I knew where we were going. About 20 miles from home, the car coughed and quit. My buddy, who had been sleeping, woke up and told me, "Oh, I forgot to tell you - when the gage says 1/8 of a tank, it's really out of gas." Would've been nice to know that before now, I thought. We were seriously middle of nowhere, and it was 2AM. I said, let's pray. "What good will that do? We're out of gas." You got a better idea? He didn't, so we prayed. Before we finished, a car pulled up behind us. and the driver came up to my window. "You guys need some help?" Well, yeah, we're out of gas. "Hang on," he said, and went back to his car. He came back with a 5-gallon gas can. "You think this will be enough?" Yeah, probably. He emptied the can into our tank, and we were good to go. Thing is, I never saw him drive off. Once we had gas, he was just. . . gone.

    1. That is just crazy. You saw the car pull up, but then it vanished? As a woman, this whole story is terrifying.

  9. OMG. This is crazy pants. I do wonder why she chose this particular son, but who knows? Maybe she visited all her kids, but no one else saw her? I totally believe it's possible.
I do have my own ghost story that I wrote about in 2010, and I re-shared it again in 2020. Maybe I should do it again?
Marks story freaked me the hell out! Like, so damn scary!!

  10. I love this so much! The best part is the fact that your BIL is a scientist and agnostic. If a guy like that will admit to believing the encounter happens, that lends extra credence to the story. Thank you so much for sharing!

My parents "discovered" wine when we lived in Ohio in the late '70s. I don't know if their wine country is the same as your wine country, but I know they dragged us to a bunch of different wineries, even way back then.

    1. Exactly! My BIL is extremely rational and sort of reserved. I never would have expected to hear a story like that happening to him.

Hmm on the Ohio wines in the 70's . . . it didn't seem to be much of a thing back then, but who knows? I think the first time I went to a winery was around 1987 and it was up by Lake Erie and there was a polka band! LOL!

  11. I've heard a few ghost stories, but a ghost stopping in to use the bathroom is a new one.

Seriously, since my mother died I have sometimes had a feeling as if she were still around, and have several times had dreams in which she was still alive. No manifestations while I was awake, though.

The August after she died, it had been hot for days, but one day it rained and cooled down. She used to love the few rainy days during the hot season, so I opened the window in the room where I keep her ashes so she could hear the rain. I know this was illogical, but it felt like the right thing to do. I believe it's natural that people have such feelings.

    1. Welcome! That's interesting about feeling your mother with you. I have a few friends who believe their departed ones visit them through birds, so I agree that it's natural to have those feelings.

  13. I've never experienced a ghost but I keep an open mind because so many people give very convincing reports of ghosts and poltergeists. My mum used to say she had seen her late mother at the foot of her bed. Did she just imagine it? Who knows?

  14. I commented while on the bike this morning, but I see now it never 'took.'

I believe that it was your MIL visiting your BIL. I think that's amazing.

When my grandma died in the middle of the night, Lad was about 4 years old. He came into my room the next morning before I told him that she died and he said GRANDMA WHITE CAME IN MY ROOM LAST NIGHT AND WOKE ME UP. SHE SAT ON THE EDGE OF MY BED. SHE WANTED TO BE SURE I WAS OK. I believe it was her. It was very eerie, but also special as she had other great grandkids at the time.

    1. OMG…….I have a friend who also had a visit (from a recently departed friend, not relative) in the middle of the night, and the person/ghost sat on the edge of her bed. I can’t remember what was said. I need to ask her to tell me the story again. It’s fascinating, but sort of terrifying to me. It sounds like Lad wasn’t scared though.

  18. That's a bit spooky! I have never been a believer in the after life (hell, heaven, etc.) but I do think we are energy, which is neither created nor destroyed, so when our body ceases to work, we must exit and continue on. Where? Idk, but I don't think our last breath is the end.
My daughter was playing in her room when she was 4 or 5 years old. I heard her carrying on, laughing, having a grand old time. I walked in expecting her to be playing dolls, but she was sitting on the floor not doing much. I said, "who are you talking to?" She replied, "My friend, Geno there in the corner." Normally, I'd write that off as her imagination. She did have 2 imaginary friends after all around that time. However, 1. Geno is not a common name, so no reason for it to be in her vocabulary. 2. Geno was the name of my grandfather who I never met. He died in an auto accident a year before I was born. 3. I never spoke his name because I never knew him, so she couldn't have possibly picked up on it from overhead conversations. Was he there in the corner and was able to communicate with her somehow? I don't know. I do know it didn't bother me if he truly was because from what I heard, he was a family man through and through. Might have just been there checking up on us and being so young, maybe my daughter was able to tune into those afterlife frequencies.

    1. That is such an interesting story, Theresa! Does your daughter remember anything about it today? I always got a little spooked when my kids were babies /toddlers and seemed to stare at things that I could not see (like they’d be looking past me). Who knows? So much we can’t explain in this world.

    2. No, she thinks the story is just weird now LOL. Both of my kids did that stare off in the distance like they were watching something only they could see. My animals do it too. But with them, I sometimes wonder if they are tuning into afterlife frequencies, or they are just really focusing with their ears and what they are listening to and their eyes just glaze over in the process.

  19. WOW! That is soooo interesting! Really enjoyed reading about those experiences.
When my mom was dying... my son (only 2 at the time) was out on the front porch with my husband, I might have been there too? Not sure if he asked him ... something about if he could see an angel with 'Gah me' (Ronnie's way of saying grandmom) and he said... yes, there, and pointed in the window towards her bed which was in the living room. So maybe a day or two later, her death was expected that morning, I took Ronnie over but we didn't go in... I was waiting for my girlfriend to pick him up and she pulled in the driveway and I handed him over to her and he was crying. The living room window nearest where her bed was wasn't open, and she wasn't conscious, but what we found later gave us the belief that she was aware. They left, I went in, she had last rites and all that and some family were by her bed when she died. We had to call and wait for the funeral director, etc... Eventually, when Ron and I got home we found blood in Ronnie's room. Our dog had gotten in there, and must have been upset at something... he was digging at the carpet and must have snagged one or more of his nails on it and so that is what the blood was. We think... that as my mom passed... somehow knowing Ronnie was upset maybe hearing him crying outside of her house... that her spirit went thru our house and into his bedroom to maybe check on him? Our dog, sensing this, got very upset and went in there and maybe felt or saw some presence. ? It seems weird but it hadn't happened before or after. And, she died on 9/26 and that is our house address.
Ronnie has no memory of it, he was too young, but we remember the general idea. Interesting!

Stu and one other person died in this book and people reported seeing a globe of light leave their bodies when they did. So, I'm saying this above is a true story. ~Betsy
