Weird Wednesday: The Halloween 2023 Edition

Just some out of the ordinary stuff I've collected for you:

Last weekend, we attended a Boos & Brews event at a brewery and afterwards, we walked around the downtown location to look at the Halloween decorations in the store windows. Skeletons really seem to have made a comeback the last few years. They are everywhere!

I found this baby display to be quite ghoulish at an antiques store.

More creepiness courtesy of the antiques dealer.

As much as I like Buy Nothing facebook pages, I often see people pawning off extremely tattered merchandise that would be better off in a trash can. Or maybe some child could wear these for Halloween if she wants to dress like a '60's era bum.

No sooner had I seen multiple posts on Reddit of people wondering why they always see dental floss picks at gas stations, I see one!!! It makes no sense at all.

I'm never a fan of parking decks when I'm alone, and finding this jeep parked next to me a few weeks ago did not help with my fear.

This walking stick remained on our garage door for an entire week. Do they not need to eat or drink? Did he really think he was blending in with the environment?

I'd never seen a Halloween sign like this before. Does it mean that they really do have the good candy, but want to hoard it for themselves? Or do they buy cheap candy that nobody wants, so it's just fair warning?

This confounds me. A house sold in our neighborhood nearly six months ago and they still have not had the realtor lock box removed from their front door. WHY?

Did you hear that the Brady Bunch house sold?? And apparently this 53 year old Barbie wannabe bought the house. This is scarier than any Halloween costume I saw last night.

  1. This is full of interesting bits. Why would this woman want the Brady home? So very strange. It doesn't seem to jive with her overall 'look.' Maybe if the Brady's were a pole dancing lot instead of a wholesome crew that worked out their issues in under 30 minutes each day. Hmmm.

The baby covered in spiders, eek.

I feel like maybe people are flossing while filling their tanks at the gas station, but why not toss them in the trash?

I ran a parish wide garage sale for years and the things people tried to donate. No one wants your garbage. So nutty. If only I'd been blogging back in those days. It would make for great blog fodder.

That lock box is bazaar. Have they not closed on the house yet?

    1. The woman is married to the CEO of Starz and I read that’s just what she does is buy expensive ‘historical’ homes. A person with too much time and money on her hands!

I can’t imagine flossing at a gas station. Gross. I can only imagine the crap people donate. It’s funny and sad.

The house definitively closed quite awhile ago. They were remodeling for a long time, but I’ve seen dogs looking out the window when I’ve walked by and with the mums on the porch, someone is living there.

  2. I guess skeletons are popular because they're easy to improvise with. Just buy a plastic skeleton and add a few accoutrements and you're done.

That zombie midget looking thing on the horse is too creepy.

Some people hate throwing things away, so when something gets too decrepit to keep using, they donate it, thinking someone else might be desperate enough to want it. It's an impulse I struggle to resist sometimes.

A lot of arthropods go kind of dormant in the winter. There's not much food around and, like reptiles, they can't maintain normal body temperature when it's cold around them. If they stay completely still they're hardly using any energy. Those that do it in such a conspicuous place tend to become victims of natural selection, though.

    1. The zombie midget was super creepy. That antiques shop was a little house of horrors! Thank you for the science lesson on arthropods. I was so surprised that little guy stuck around for so long. I usually only see about one per year.

  3. I'd like to know the answer to this, too: "A house sold in our neighborhood nearly six months ago and they still have not had the realtor lock box removed from their front door. WHY?" Same situation happened across the street from us and I swear it was a year before the box disappeared. I'm not a nosy neighbor so I don't know the whole story, but I still think it was weird.

    1. Ok, that is ironic that you noticed the same thing across the street from you. If you ever talk to them, please ask!🤓

  4. I might answer the lock box question! Did the new neighbours move in yet? Because if they have a long possession date, the lock box stays on until the date of possession. We sold our house at the end of April but the new owners did not get possession until the end of July, so the lock box stayed on that whole time. It was weird to me but *shrug*
Also weird to me, flossing your teeth while you pump the gas! Ew.
I want the sign about the good candy!

    1. Well, a lot of remodeling has gone on the entire summer, so I thought it was flippers who intended to just resell. But then that stopped and people are clearly living there as I see dogs in the windows and they decorated the front porch. I can’t imagine not calling the realtor to say come get it. And I can’t even with the gas station flossers!

  5. Being that I am a huge Halloween fan, I LOVED this post and the photos you shared.

I did this yesterday afternoon. I walked around the city and scoped out all-things Halloween. And it was the perfect day to do it because it was gray and cloudy. So GOTH!

"I found this baby display to be quite ghoulish at an antiques store." OMG, ghoulish indeed!

And those shoes!!!!! I think you're right, some child could wear them if they want to dress like a '60's era bum. LOL!

I see those dental floss picks all over the sidewalks in this city. How GROSS that people just throw them wherever.

    That jeep is so CREEPY!!

" And apparently this 53 year old Barbie wannabe bought the house. This is scarier than any Halloween costume I saw last night. "

I TOTALLY agree! SCAR-Y! And speaking of Barbie, I saw the movie and totally disliked it. I enjoyed the visual aspect of the film. But the storyline? No.

Thanks for sharing, my friend. Have a faaaaaaaabulous Wednesday! X

    1. Ooohhh, are you going to share your photos? I bet they are fabulous! Ok, that’s crazy that you are seeing flossers on the sidewalk. What is wrong with people? I can’t even imagine flossing without a mirror, let alone doing it in public. And then to litter with them? Nuts!

I did not see the Barbie movie, but it seemed to get mixed reviews. Some loved it. Doesn’t that woman look like plastic? She probably mostly is! Have a great week, Ron. I’m sending you some snow! XO

  6. I have no idea why the lock boxes are not removed right away but I do know that some new owners have started using tools to remove it themselves after repeatedly asking the realtors to remove them and getting no answers. I saw this on Tiktok.

    I love the creepy decorations.

    1. Mary, that is so interesting that you’ve seen people having to remove the lock boxes on TikTok. I will have to look that up!

  7. THIS IS A FANTASTIC POST.

I love it when towns decorate their storefront windows. That first photo was adorable.

I'm all for environmental preservation, but for the love of God, people, throw used stuff away. Those shoes. 🤣

I'd never heard of the dental floss pick/gas station thing before, but I have a theory. People who go on dates usually get gas before the date, so it's possible that they're picking their teeth before the date while they're getting gas. 😊

    Walking sticks are very cool.

That woman resembles Marcia Brady. (If you need help, Marcia, blink twice.)

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed my post. I never know if people will have trouble commenting (“Oh, that’s nice”) 🤣 Yes, I’m all for recycling too, but some folks have no sense. Goodwill would throw those right in their dumpster.

People get gas before dates? I guess I’ve never thought that took place, but when was the last time I picked up a date? Never! Haha! I still don’t get flossing without a mirror. And I guess that girl could be Marcia if Marcia had lots of cosmetic surgery and a spray tan!

  8. I love walking around little towns and looking at decorations. We went to Romeo Michigan on Saturday and walked the town and had a blast. Tillson Street everyone goes all out on their decor. It's called Terror on Tillson Street. I took a 70 year old lady with me, one who is straight forward, kind of mean, and doesn't seem like the type to enjoy such an outing, but she had a great time there. Took all kinds of pics to share on her social media LOL
I've never seen floss at a gas pump. Now I am going to look for them every time I go.
I love the buy nothing group. Thankfully I live very close to the "rich" people neighborhoods and we actually get amazing things offered up. Recently a kitchenaid stand mixer and a Samsung washer and dryer set. I always crack up though at someone giving away a half a box of granola bars or 3 fun size bags of chips and people jump on it like there's no tomorrow. I'd waste more in gas going to pick those things up than what they are worth!

    1. Wow, I’ve never heard of Romeo and its street of terror. It looks like they go all out. That was a hike for you! I’m cracking up at your description of the lady you took with you. Glad she enjoyed it! LMK if you ever see a flosser at the gas station.

The Buy Nothing groups are fascinating, just to see what people are giving away. I’ve seen baby formula and vitamins, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen food. Hilarious that people would be so excited about food. I think this deserves its own post. Hilarious.

  9. Great post. I walked in to my office a week or two ago and there was a flosser on the floor by the doctor's lab coats. I am REALLY hoping that maybe it just fell out of some ones pocket and that it was not used here. I used a wet wipe to pick it up and trash it.
Love the Halloween photos. That doll is beyond creepy.
    Odd about the lock box.

  10. The baby dolls are just nasty. Weird about the shoes. I mean, really? And now I'M going to be seeing those dumb dental picks! That woman is 53? Who IS she? Clearly someone who can afford to get a lot of work done. Barbie wannabe is an apt description! I'm guessing people bought that house but just haven't been able to move in yet? ~Betsy

    1. Yes, nasty is the right adjective. The woman is the wife of the Starz CEO and I guess her hobby is buying historical houses. LMK when you see a flosser in the wild! Oh, the house in our hood is occupied. I see dogs looking out the window and they decorated the outside of the house with fall decor (presumably the people, not the dogs)🤓

  11. Interesting post! I also have noticed a few floss picks around! Strange! A long time ago I volunteered to help organize a rummage sale at a church. I remember holding up a stained and holy t-shirt and the lady running the sale told me to keep it on the table because someone poor may need it for a quarter! No joke!

    1. I would have been so aggravated by that woman’s comment. Then again, I tried to give 100 bars of brand new wrapped bars of soap to our local food bank and the woman running it said no thanks, that people preferred liquid soap. I thought that was stupid.

  12. Skeletons were very popular in our neighbourhood for Halloween. And naturally loads of pumpkins. We had some trick or treaters five days before Halloween, so of course we had nothing to give them. Then on Halloween night we had no trick or treaters at all - probably because there was a lot of rain.
Re the insect, some insects can survive for months without food, and that might be one.

  13. Hi Bijoux, I'm late in catching up on blog reading due to our travels, but enjoyed this one of creepy Halloween sights, especially that doll and Jeep. We did see several London pubs all decked out for Halloween and a few people on city streets. My favorite was in London when a cyclist was dressed in a skeleton costume with a baby skeleton riding as a passenger on the back fender. It passed so fast, I didn't get a photo (drat!) The women who bought the Brady house looked a bit scary herself. We celebrated the day by meeting up with a fellow blogger in Edinburgh.

  14. I swear I left a comment yesterday.
I always love your random findings posts. I do see the floss sticks around; why are people slobs?
No thanks on the spooky dolls---those are the things of nightmares.

The shoes. Hmmm. I do believe in society we have varying degrees of what is 'still usable'. Those would be a No Go for me or anyone I wanted to gift a pair of shoes to.

I did leave a comment, because I remember this part 100%.
My aunt and uncle are realtors. When they purchased their mountain home last year (or was it the year before?) they left the lockbox on the door for when a service person was coming to do work on the house if they were out for the day. Even after the work was done, they left it on for if myself or a neighbor needed to get into the house for something while they were away. Now, they've upgraded and installed a keyless entry pad, which is super convenient.

    1. I double checked and can’t find your earlier comment. I’m sorry! Blogger has been weird for at least a year now. Sometimes my own comments fail to go through on my blog:(

What’s with the flossers on the ground? Who flosses outdoors? Weirdos!

Ok, that is the best explanation for the lockbox! The house here has had a lot of remodeling done since it was purchased, so that makes sense. And maybe they aren’t quite done. We’ve always just given out a garage door code (I change it back to our ‘real one’ when the work is done) so maybe they find that easier. I’d be concerned about the key being lost by a worker.

  15. The first picture is cute. I like that style of decoration, the creepy stuff not so much. Never been into scary movies wither; but some of the decorations I've seen are really creepy and I would think harmful for wee ones out trick or treating. The lock box is curious. Wonder what's going on with that. I'm not a fan of parking garages either when alone, they make me very uncomfortable. So, I would rather walk farther and park outside in public places.

  16. I can see why you would not be excited about that jeep parking next to you. It seems like jeep people like to decorate their vehicles in unique ways. No explanation for you on the lock box. There's a rental house nearby that has folks living in it but it still has the lock box on it. Maybe if they pay 6 months rent then they get the keys. The landlord has trust issues. Ha. I need to look up the owner of the Brady Bunch house because I don't know too many 53 year olds that look like that. Either a lot of surgery or a lot of filters are being used.

    1. Jeep People… it’s a thing! A lock box on a long-term rental is odd. Yeah, Barbie is not aging, at all. Her husband is Starz CEO, so she’s got money to waste.
