Photo Friday: 2023 Leftovers

As the title suggests, this post will feature photos from last year that I never got around to posting:

We gave away so much Christmas decor that was in my mother's basement but did keep a few things that might be useful. My husband decided to hang these ornaments from the lighting fixture that hangs above our kitchen island for a festive look. I'm hoping we can get rid of that monstrosity in the near future and replace it with recessed lighting, while updating all the other recessed lighting on the first floor.

Speaking of home projects, we had our third bathroom remodeled in July. It was also the third contractor we worked with and by far my favorite. So easy to work with and reasonable pricing. This is a before shot. Note the horrible yellow pedestal sink and the yellow tile floor, along with the dolphin textured wallpaper.

More of the ugly floor and wallpaper and the clanky shower door that was becoming impossible to move.

I went with a navy blue vanity and large tile. As always, the lighting and mirror were something my husband and I perseverated on for weeks until we found what we liked.

New shower door and toilet. I love that the new potty is completely flush with the floor, so nothing to clean around it.

In lieu of Christmas gifts this year, my husband and I went to see the comedian, Brian Regan. He has very funny facial expressions, so we got tickets close to the stage. No photos were permitted during the show, so I took this when we arrived. We were only 20 minutes early, but hardly anyone arrived until about 5 minutes before the start time. Weird. It was a good (not great) show, but we had a fun night out, with dinner beforehand. My husband got a good laugh out of Regan’s bit about people who back into parking spaces for a quick exit. That is totally me, which is why my spouse was dying.

My son and daughter-in-law are foodies who also love to bake and cook. They made this Buche de Noel (yule log) for Christmas. Aren't the meringue mushrooms so cute? It tasted amazing!

The first gift I bought for the season was Guess Who for my grandson. I have very fond memories of playing it with my children, and it turned out to be a big hit. A few years ago, my husband made one for his office, with photos of his colleagues. It was a hit at the office Christmas party.

Every year, we host the 'Cousin Christmas Party.' It's my kids' cousins, but only half of them, since my husband doesn't have anything to do with two out of his four siblings. We plan all of the games and food and it's quite a lot of work. My husband always goes the extra mile and made this gift bag as the prize for one of the games. This is his sense of humor, in a nutshell.

Also his sense of humor . . . he always finds sarcastically sentimental gifts for the one sister he is close with. She gets a big laugh out of it.

The pinnacle of the party is the White Elephant Gift Exchange. It involves a lot of stealing, based on your number. I first unwrapped a box that contained a rubber spider on a spring, which my 4 year old granddaughter wanted. Then I unwrapped a Hannukah singing llama, which was stolen by a desperate person? I finally ended up with this weird sign that my husband is going to hang in our garage. Every time I see it, I think 'Boom! Bazooka Joe!' If anyone knows that reference, you are my kind of person!

My daughter took her kids to the Goodyear Air Dock for a Toys For Tots campaign. You remained in your car and Santa came up to the car to talk to your kids after your donation of toys. Then you got to drive by the blimp. A pretty cool experience, if you ask me.

I love a Kermit meme, and this one is so relatable for me. I crack up every time I look at it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Thank you for your well wishes after my last post. I am operating at 95% now and hope to be completely recovered by the weekend. It has turned out to be an accidental dry holiday/January for me, but maybe I'll be off the wagon soon ;)

  1. Okay, I LOVE the idea your husband had about hanging the ornaments from the lighting fixture. That looks so cool! I love the whole look of your kitchen, particularly the color of the cabinets.

That bathroom remodel? A-MAZING! It doesn't even look like the same space. Throughout the years of knowing you, I've always enjoyed your remodel/makeovers. You have a natural talent for it!

I've seen a few clips of Brian Regan. I love his sense of humor! Do you know that in all the years I drove, I never thought to back into a parking space? However, what I used to love to do is parallel park. Isn't that weird?

"I have very fond memories of playing it" - Me too. I used to love playing that game. I got it one year for Christmas.

The Kermit meme made me LOL because I used to hate that when I still drove. However, that didn't stop when I moved to a city and no longer drove, because we have people standing on every corner, stopping you as you walk by, asking for donations. That's why I always walk around with my earbuds and cellphone, pretending I'm on a business conference call and can't talk. Ha!

Thanks for the update, my friend. Enjoyed! And I'm happy to hear you're feeling 95% better. Have a fabulous weekend! X

    1. Thanks, Ron. The kitchen cabinets are ‘pickled oak,’ which was popular when the house was built in 1991. We like it. When we moved in, I just replaced the hardware to a satin nickel for an updated look. I do love choosing everything for a remodel. This was our third and final bathroom in 18 months. It’s good to be done, but I do have some other more minor home projects in mind, like the lighting.

Most people hate parallel parking, so it’s funny that you liked it! I rarely need to parallel park. But I hate backing out of spaces because so many people are either on their phones or just don’t care that you are trying to leave, so it’s a steady stream of people walking behind your car. Drives me nuts!

Buskers and panhandlers have become out of control here, even in the suburbs! And now we have police and firefighters doing charity drives at red lights! I’m like, GET OUT OF THE STREET! It’s dangerous and stupid, IMO. I love that you act like you’re on a conference call while walking! LOL! Have a fun weekend, Ron.

  2. Glad you're feeling better!!
I love the ornaments hanging from the light, it's so festive.
Your bathroom looks 100 times better. Isn't it always amazing how much difference and update does? I love your choice of mirror, lights and vanity. Very pretty!!
The yule log is awesome. That is on my bucket list for next Christmas. I wanted to make one this year but with TBG going through issues at the time, I never did make it.
    LOVE the Bazooka Joe sign.
I'm glad that even though you were sick you seemed to make some pretty great Christmas memories. Have a great weekend and stay warm.

    1. We do love the new bathroom, plus we now have storage space with that vanity. I took French for many years and always wanted to make a Yule log, but was intimidated by the rolling process. I hope you make one this year and post about it.

  3. First of all that bathroom remodel is fantastic, and second of all, I desperately want to eat that Yule log. Wow does that ever look delicious. I love those kind of gift exchanges, they are so much fun. It sounds like you've been having fun and I am so glad you are feeling better!

    1. Thank you, Nicole. I only had one piece of the cake and it was probably the last thing I could taste for two weeks, but it was delicious. We always crack up at the awful gifts people find for the white elephant. My contribution this year was a small ceramic cactus from my mom’s condo. The person who got it said they’d use it as a ring holder! Have a great weekend!

  4. I love the ornaments hanging in the kitchen. Think I would continue that. The bathroom turned out great. We're soon to start a bathroom redo, not a small project when it's the only bathroom. Sounds like you had a nice evening out with hubby even if the show was great.

    1. I’m hoping to get rid of the box light as it’s just too big and dated. This was our third bathroom remodel in 18 months. I don’t envy you when it’s the only bathroom, as you’ll need to make other arrangements for toileting and showering!

  5. I love the ornaments hanging from the ceiling, but yes, definitely someday I would get rid of the monstrosity! Your kitchen is beautiful. The bathroom remodel look great, so clean and bright and lots of storage room. Sounds like you guys really enjoyed the holidays. Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family!

    1. That huge box light is the first thing you see when you walk into the kitchen. We’ve postponed its removal, just because we know the ceiling will need to be redone after. And thank you!

  6. The bathroom transformation is spectacular. It looks great not to mention all that storage space. I've never made a Buche de Noel. They looks so difficult to make and I don't know if I'm up to the challenge. You're lucky someone made one for you. I like Kermit meme. Yep, I'm like that too.

    1. Thanks, Ally. I was quite please with the bathroom. I’ve never attempted to make any type of rolled cake. I just know it would crack and not work for me. Kermit is so relatable in any meme!

  7. I love your new bathroom, especially the blue cabinet. That toilet does look easy to clean! Great gifts for everyone! I've always wanted to make a Buche de Noel but never have tried yet. Kudos to them for the double branch! It looks delicious!

    1. Isn’t the navy blue pretty? I had to find tile and paint color that would go with the oak door, so had to go neutral. It was nice to add the pop of color with the vanity. The cake was yummy!

  8. There is so much to comment on!
    I LOVE THE BLUE VANITY.
Every year for my brother's birthday cake, my mom would make a Buche de Noel. I haven't had one in years. I love the meringue mushrooms!
One of my favorite games to play with my daughters was Guess Who! I love how you used to play it with your kids and now with your grandchildren.
That Goodyear Air Dock is the coolest thing ever.
    I am Kermit.
Oh, friend, I'm glad you're feeling better. You had a rough go. My oldest daughter has Covid and is really sick. It's the sickest she's been in many years. It's just a really bad year for illnesses.

    Happy New Year! 😘

    1. Isn’t the navy blue so pretty? It was the exact pop of color needed. I am SO impressed that your mom made your brother a Buche de Noel every year! Wow! Our birthday cakes were always Duncan Hines. Isn’t Guess Who so much fun? Not annoying like that damn Chutes and Ladders. 🤣 I’m sorry your daughter got Covid. Is it her second time? Because I thought it wasn’t supposed to be as bad after you’ve already had it? I’m getting paranoid about all this sickness going around, but boy do I hate wearing a mask. Hope your daughter feels better soon and that your Dad is hanging in there. XO

  9. The bathroom update is amazing! I'd never have thought to use Dolphin Wallpaper in the midwest, but then again, I'm weird. 🤪
The Yule log is a piece of art; I'd enjoy spending time with you AND your foodies.
I saw Brian Reagan a few years ago; he is funny. I don't remember the backing in a parking spot bit, but I also try to do this. It makes SO much sense!
Linds and I loved playing Guess Who. We'd change our questions to the weirdest ones possible: Can your person pee standing up? Can your person give birth? Does your person look like a serial killer? We crazy like that.
I also love your husbands sense of humor!
I'm glad you are feeling better. Cheers to a great 2024 for you and your family. XO

    1. The original owners had ‘interesting’ taste . . . so.much.pink! We had pink Corian kitchen countertops, for one example. We’ve almost erased all their handiwork 🤣
We did enjoy Brian Regan, but felt the show was a little short, considering the ticket price. There was one warm up comedian who was just okay. OMG, my kids would have died at the serial killer question 🤣🤣🤣 You are so fun, Suz! 🥰

  10. So glad you are feeling better. The yule log looks amazing. Love the bathroom renovation. I laughed at your husband making a Guess Who game of his coworkers. What a riot. I also love a Kermit meme. I bought stickers for the kids' water bottles for my side Christmas party. (there are 22 grandkids on my side) I think next year we should do a game with kids stealing them from each other.

Your bathroom remodel turned out very nice!
Ron backs into parking spots a lot! I can never manage that, even with a camera!, but I like where there are 2 spots and I can drive thru one and then be facing out.
The Christmas party sounded like a fun time!
Toys for Tots... wonderful! Driving in the hanger and past a blimp ... omg no! NOOO!! They freak me out so much I'd probably need medical attention if I saw one that close. LOL No idea why, I've always been like that. I usually get teary eyed when I see photos of the Hindenburg. Not the tragedy, of course that is sad to all, but just the actual blimp. Weird, huh!?

    1. Thanks, Mary. Oh, I absolutely try to pull through if there are two parking spots. So much easier! I actually understand about not wanting to see a blimp up close. When I was a kid, that Goodyear Air Dock freaked me out when we would occasionally drive by it. I think it’s called megalophobia? It doesn’t bother me so much anymore, but now I’m terrified of heights. I can barely climb a ladder!

  12. People round here also like to back into parking spaces. There's the added advantage that you can see more of the road when you're driving out. The yule log is amazing, I wouldn't mind a slice or two! Your remodelled bathroom is a great improvement on how it was before.

I am planning a post about backing into parking spaces, because that is also me...and yet, family members give me grief. It's a topic worth exploring.

I hung giant ornaments from the living room ceiling for a festive look, too. And I love Brian Regan. I'm beginning to think you and I are kindred spirits!

  15. That was a great bathroom remodel, Bijoux, and the choice of vanity and lighting were good ones compared to the original. Sad to say the apartment here has that oversize bulb lighting (standard). Nice to decorate the kitchen with hanging ornaments, not possible in our smallish galley space. I'm one of those who will pull forward into an open space, but will never back into one.

Thanks for your comment on my blog today. I totally agree with you on not posting about politics, religion or hot topics that are sure to generate controversy. I steer clear of all in my posts and avoid commenting on blogs that focus exclusively on such topics.

    1. Thank you, we were very happy with the contractor and the end result. Third time was a charm when it came to bathroom remodelers. The world would be a better place if we didn't argue about things online, like politics or religion. Nobody is going to change their mind, so there's no purpose to it, besides irritating those of us who are not interested.

  16. I'm so happy that you're feeling better! The bathroom looks great and that yule log looked delicious. Loved the Bazooka Joe sign and it's so cool that your daughter and her kids got to see the Goodyear blimp--pretty good.

  18. The updated bathroom looks fantastic! I painted my kitchen cabinets that navy blue color a few years back and still love it for a cabinet color. Glad this contractor didn't give you issues like the other horrors you've posted about in the past.
Backing into a parking space isn't something that I do because I'm horrible at it, but my husband will do it every chance he can. It's safer to back into a space and pull out hood first than the other way around and that's why I assume most people who do back in do it. Plus I don't know why people get in a huffy over those who back in. You're either going to wait for them to back in or back out, so what difference would it make? People that gripe about it baffle me.
    The dessert looks amazing!
Guess Who, oh how I loved that game when I was around 11 or 12. I used to play that one with a friend every time we had a sleepover. Fun memories!
I love white elephant exchanges! Anything that gets the family together and laughing but also has an element of competitiveness to it is a ok in my book. The MAGA bag would be a hilarious prize, though I know a few in my family would be offended by it. That would make it that much better to offer up, imo LOL

    1. I’d love to see your kitchen cabinets. It’s such a beautiful color. Yes, I back in so I can easily pull out. When I had a minivan, I once hit someone backing out. I really just grazed their arm, but it completely freaked me out. I realized then that people ignore brake lights and will just walk behind you when you are inching out. That drives me insane! With so many huge SUVs, it’s really hard to see around them when backing out.

Our vegan niece won the MAGA bag and she got a good laugh about it. They have a new home, so maybe she’ll use the flags (without the Trump face)? 🤣

    2. I'll be sure to take pics of my cabinets and send them to you on Instagram next week. I'd do it right now but I moved everything from my basement into my kitchen while new carpet is being laid down there and it's a disaster right now.
I have a cutting board that I sell with Trump on it along with a funny saying . I'm indifferent to him, not one I'll vote for if he's on the ticket this year, but he's not someone that riles me up either. The funny thing is, I have f bombs and all kinds of other profanity on a lot of my other stuff and the only thing I've ever had a promotor ask me to remove was my Trump cutting board because it was offensive LOL.

  20. Major points to Hubby for the Christmas ornaments in the kitchen. Very cute and creative. Agree that your bathroom looks way better. Nicely done! I had to google perseverated. Thanks for helping me learn something new today! Super fun and yum looking cake. I got Guess Who for my kids because I also remember enjoying it as a kid.
