Photo Friday: They Say It's Your Birthday

I recently celebrated my birthday 'week' and here are the pictures to prove it:

My actual birthday was a rainy day, which spoiled any ideas for outdoor activities. As we are on a mission to visit all of the presidential sites in Ohio, we headed to Canton to the William McKinley Monument and Museum. Canton is the final resting place of the 25th president of the U.S. It is the city where his career began, where he met his wife, and where he ran for office.

Nothing says birthday like visiting a marble sarcophagi! Here is where President McKinley and his wife Ida are laid to rest. It's a beautiful rotunda with a red, white, and blue skylight.

While we'd been to the monument numerous times as children and adults, none of us (Middle Child came with us that day) had been to the museum next door which features history and science.

There is a McKinley Gallery which displays items from their homes . . .

and memorabilia from his presidency. He served from 1897 until he was assassinated in 1901.

Part of the museum is dedicated to a Street of Shops, which was a really fun experience. You could walk in and out of various life-size replicas, like this general store. There was a toy store, barbershop, drugstore, physician's office, attorney's office, dentist, post office, and more.

For lunch, we headed to a restaurant I've been wanting to try for years in that area. The Twisted Olive has a cabin/ski lodge feel and I loved the lime green accents inside and out. We started with their popular crispy brussel sprouts that are made with bacon, truffle honey, and parmesan. They definitely lived up to the hype. For my entree, I had the lump crab sliders, which were also very good.

On Saturday, it was time to dress up and head downtown, a place I rarely get to see. My husband works in the heart of the city and has no desire to go back on the weekends, but it was birthday girl's choice and he made up for all those times he vetoed me! He said he was going to take me to the Trifecta of Cleveland:

We started out the evening at the famous Marble Room, located in what was the National City Bank, back in the day. The architecture is Revival and Gothic. When you enter the door from the street, there are velvet ropes that you cannot pass until you state your business! (It is difficult to get a reservation and proper attire is required, thank you very much!) Our business was the bar, which we were led to the last two remaining seats. (Note, the above is not my picture)

My dream was to have a glass of champagne at the Marble Room and my wish was fulfilled. It was everything I had hoped it would be. Spouse had their chocolate orange cocktail.

Dinner was at Blue Point Grille, Cleveland's premiere seafood restaurant. Here is my husband's Nags Head grouper over lobster mashed potatoes and my Chilean sea bass with broccoli and corn puree. Amazing food!

For dessert, we headed to Chef Rocco Whalen's Fahrenheit which features contemporary cuisine. We ordered the strawberry shortcake baked Alaska, which is flambeed tableside.

Here is what it looked like after the flame stopped, alongside our chocolate martinis.

One sticking point with my husband is that he won't park downtown unless it's in his company's secure parking garage. He also won't go downtown at night unless there is a large event going on (baseball/basketball games or concert) because there will be more of a police presence. He also forbids me to carry a purse. Yeah, there's a lot of rules! The evening was a LOT of walking (note my flat sandals) from the parking garage to the different restaurants and back, all before it got dark. But, it was four hours of great fun and I made him take this photo of me at the end of the night at Tower City.

A few days later, my friends took me to another new-to-me spot for lunch. Merwin's Wharf on the East Bank of the Flats. We lucked out with a beautiful day! All in all, it was a fantabulous birthday!

What do you like to do for your birthday?

  1. First, Happy Belated Birthday, my friend!

Fantastic photographs! I didn't realize Ohio had so much American history rooted there. Here in Philadelphia it's all over the place, especially down in the lower end of Philly (Old City). If you ever come to visit, I will take you there because I think you would enjoy it.

"Nothing says birthday like visiting a marble sarcophagi!" LOL!!!

The tiny rocking chair and high chair are so cute. All furniture was made from wood back then, and that's why I think it lasted so long - sturdier.

Don't you love looking at objects from past eras and imagining those people using them and wearing them? I find that fascinating. I would have loved walking into those shops and looking at all those things!

Okay, and the Marble Room is INCREDIBLE! WOW...that interior photograph is stunning! Your food, drinks, and desserts looked amazing!

Reading the rules your husband stands by, I don't blame him because it's the same here in Philadelphia. I RARELY go out at night anymore. All I hear are constant sirens and yelling on the streets at night. I'm not normally afraid of stuff like that because I lived in NYC for many years, however, I find it scarier here. The crime and violence as skyrocketed.

What a great way to end your night --- love that final photograph of you!

Thanks so much for sharing your birthday! One of these days I have to visit Cleveland, I always enjoy your photographs! Such a cool-looking city!

    Have a superb weekend! X

For my birthday, I enjoy changing my surroundings and visiting someplace different for the day. I like taking the train outside the city and having lunch with a friend. I did that last year with my friend, Marge, who also has a birthday in October.

    1. Thank you!!! Ohio was the birthplace of 7 presidents, plus the Wright Brothers and Neil Armstrong, just to name a few, so we do have a lot of historical places to visit. Yes! The furniture back then was so well made. I love looking at items from the past, too.

The Marble Room really is incredible! We have a lot of amazing buildings downtown from Cleveland’s heyday. But omg, the absolute second we stepped out of his building (from the parking deck) we were approached by a beggar and then a guy who was high as a kite tried to ask us something at a crosswalk while we were waiting (couldn’t understand a word he said). He then proceeded to walk across the street in the middle of traffic and all the cars had to stop 🙄. I thought for sure I’d be witnessing a death! It’s insane. And that was just two of them. You should have seen how fast we walked everywhere. My feet have cuts from my sandal straps🤣

That sounds like my kind of birthday! Love to try new things! I hope yo7 have a nice weekend, Ron. You deserve it! XO

  4. The trifecta looks like a great choice. The museum in Canton also so interesting. I didn't realize McKinley was assassinated. My history buff father would be disappointed in me. I suppose if Husband works in the city then he knows what is what. One can never be too cautious. I love that your friends also took you out to celebrate. Sounds like a great birthday week!

I like spending my birthday eating with the whole family, maybe going out for a drink with my husband, and watching a movie with the whole gang. In reality, we usually attend a high school b-ball game (tis the season, Christmas tournament time) and Coach takes me to dinner and I fall asleep trying to watch a movie with everyone. Ha.

    1. Yes, he was assassinated at the Pan-American games in Buffalo. Another Ohio president, James Garfield, was assassinated in a train station in D.C. Neither died instantly and might have survived with modern medicine.

My husband always chooses an extended family meal here at home. Usually what he refers to as a Big Italian Dinner. My first choice is always a trip away from home, but that’s me!

  6. I love that you were celebrated for the WEEK! That is the way to do it.
I'm giggling at all the rules you had to follow, but what a girl won't do to have champagne, a great dinner, and flaming dessert? HA. The TriFecta looks absolutely fun! Happy belated birthday.

I love that you visiting another Presidential Site. You are a patriot! ❤️

  8. Nothing says birthday like visiting a marble sarcophagi!

Nothing, J? What about CAKE? Presents? Balloons? Party hats? Singing?? Marble sarcophagi always screamed Easter to me personally.

Looks like you had a great birthday week, all those pesky city safety rules notwithstanding. I'm like you: I want a little fun and adventure, and a good cocktail or three, on my birthday!

    1. I did get a mini cheesecake at Aldi. I’m trying to lay off the sugar! Birthdays must include adventure. That’s a given.

  9. That looks like a great trip. I like the street of shops. We have a similar collection of old shops at the Ulster Folk Museum. The Marble Room is very dramatic. Your glass of champagne looks very generous!
And wow, your husband is very strict about going downtown!
What do I do for my birthday? Just relax at home doing nothing in particular. Good food, good wine, a bit of TV, that's it.

  12. Happy Belated Birthday! Looks like a great time and the food and drinks all sound so delicious! My birthday is in January so pretty much any outdoor activity is out but I do like to have a nice dinner. My husbands is 4 days before mine so we only celebrate once for both of us! Your husband sounds a lot like my husband when it comes to going into downtown Detroit! Only in the daylight or when some event is happening!

    1. Oh man, yes I suppose downtown Detroit is pretty rough at night. Not the place to be. That is fun to go out and celebrate both of your birthdays together. At least it’s something fun to do in January!

Happy 🎂 belated birthday to you, Bijoux, and I liked how you had some very different ways of celebrating from visiting the McKinley site to doing the town with your husband and then meeting up with friends. It looks like you had great company with family and friends, also some delicious😋food and tasty drinks. The dessert looked great too!

  16. Happy belated birthday, dear friend! It looks like you had a great time!

Isn't it amazing how many presidents Ohio produced? That looks like a lot of fun to visit those sites. I would love to do that. We visited the Lincoln Museum in Springfield (Illinois) with the kids many years ago, and the rooms were set up as if they were in their home. I'll never forget learning that Mary Lincoln had recurring migraines. I can't imagine having those back when there was no air conditioning, women had to wear heavy clothing, and there weren't many pain relievers available. It made me feel compassion for someone I had never met. That's why I enjoy going to places like this. I'll never forget that.

I have always wanted to try baked Alaska! Now I want to try it even more! Your dining options look incredible! I'm so glad you had a great birthday month!

Loved all of this. Thank you for sharing it with us. 😘❤️

    1. It’s amazing what resonates with us when we visit historical sites. I’m always saddened by the fact that so many children didn’t survive. The McKinley’s lost both their daughters by age 3. Isn’t that horrible?

I remember visiting the Lincoln site in Springfield when I was a kid! We then drove north and escaped a double tornado while driving! One of my many vacation memories 🤣🤣🤣

Baked Alaska is interesting but chocolate anything is still better!

  18. Happy belated birthday, Bijoux! I'm glad you had a great time. I think I need to start the practice of celebrating for a week! It's cool you're into presidential sites. Hubby, an American history teacher, approves. Also, this: Nothing says birthday like visiting a marble sarcophagi! Hilarious! Now, do you suppose that Olive [Whatever it was] restaurant's interior accents were lime green, or... olive?? ~Betsy

    1. LOL, how did I not think of their theme color with the name?? Although it really was more lime green (neon, actually) than olive. One must celebrate for at least a week. A month is even better. The Dollar Tree store used to sell wine tumblers that said ‘It’s My Birthday Month’ that I would buy for friends.

Always happy to impress a teacher!
