Music Monday: This Is For You 90's Kids

So, this happened and we had third row seats for it! Third Eye Blind is one of my favorite bands from the 90's and this was our first time seeing them in concert.

It was a beautiful night for music in an outdoor venue. First up was a band new to us: Arizona. My husband and I were totally impressed with them. They had great charisma and were super thankful to be there, opening for Yellowcard and 3eB. As the venue does not allow anything but see through vinyl purses, I opted to not bring anything, including my phone. In lieu of that, here's a video of the final song of the night from Arizona. We thought it was a really good one.

Next up was Yellowcard. I asked my husband to take a picture during the final song and instead of getting a shot of the more recognizable lead singer, he took this epic shot of the bass guitarist.

This was their most popular song from 2003. Again, the band was thrilled to be opening for 3eB. The lead singer, Ryan Key, said that he remembered listening to 3eB in his bedroom at age 17 and never could have dreamed he'd be on tour with them some day. Personally, I did not enjoy Yellowcard as much as Arizona, but they put on a good show. However, the couple sitting next to us said that they were there from Pennsylvania, specifically to see Yellowcard, so they have a following.

On to the main act! He's a controversial singer (he's been denigrated by many a fellow artist), but we love Stephan Jenkins nonetheless. This is what 60 looks like and I am here for it! They played all their hits (Never Let You Go, Narcolepsy, Graduate, Jumper, Semi-Charmed Life). The only disappointment for us was that they didn't perform Losing A Whole Year, which we love. At one point, the crew covered the risers with furry rugs and throw pillows and the band sat down and performed four songs acoustically. They wanted to give a living room vibe, which was pretty cool.

We were so happy to hear them play their hits, dating back to 1990's. And thankfully, no politics! Jenkins said that their tour was focusing on the JOY of performing. He wanted to bring some joy in the midst of the polarity that our country faces, uniting our voices while we sang along to some great hits. It was a joyful evening for us, for sure!

The encore, another favorite, How's It Going To Be. My husband took a great video, but since Blogger sucks, here's one from a few weeks back when they played in California. Same exact vibe of the sing along. Loved it!

Do you have a favorite '90's band?

  1. Stephan Jenkins is 60? How is that possible?? ("Jumper" is my go-to Third Eye Blind song.)

As for a favorite '90s band, I'm going with Catherine Wheel. Probably a little obscure for many, but that's just the way I like 'em!

    1. I know! He turns 60 in September and looks amazing!!! I have never heard of Catherine Wheel, so I must look them up!

    2. You've probably heard "Black Metallic" if nothing else!

    3. I listened to it and a few of their other songs and nothing sounded familiar, Mark. I did miss a lot of the ‘90’s due to numerous childbirths 🤣

  2. You really taught me something with this post because I had never heard of Third Eye Blind, Arizona, or Yellowcard. That photo your husband took is PHENOMINAL! And you're right, EPIC! Please tell him I said, "BRAVO!!!!"

I feel so happy that you both got to see these bands! You love of music is contagious!

I have two favorite bands - U2 and R.E.M. (late 80s-90s) As a single artist, I loved (and still do) Mary J Blige.

Thanks for sharing, my friend! ENJOYED!

    1. Hmmm, well I bet you know Semi-Charmed Life by 3eB because it played on repeat back then. I mean, A LOT! U2 was my favorite band for decades, but I’ve grown a little tired of them over the last few years. I don’t know why. We’ve seen them twice. The Elevation tour was a religious experience and will probably always be my favorite concert, but Depeche Mode last November came in a close second.

We are really enjoying live music now. It’s a combination of having the spending money to afford it now, plus knowing some of these acts won’t be around much longer.

Thanks for reading all my music posts, Ron! XO

  3. That's so fun! Hey, have you ever listened to the podcast 60 Songs That Explain The 90s? I recently listened to one featuring Third Eye Blind and thought I would die laughing about the discussion of Steven Jenkins!

  4. I can't believe someone in a 90s band is 60! I feel old! I've always liked Third Eye Blind, but I love that they're purposely not political like that! It's so nice that they're not using their fame to further divide and stir people up.

Matchbox 20 is my absolute favorite 90s band. I still listen to Push on constant repeat sometimes. And Rob Thomas is big into animal rescue, which I love.

    1. It was shocking that he turns 60 this year, though he would have been close to 30 when starting the band and it took some years to get a hit. My oldest daughter hasn’t been to a ton of concerts, but she always says Matchbox 20 was the absolute best. Rob Thomas gives it everything. I’d definitely go see them if I get the chance. AND Goo Goo Dolls!

  5. By the time the 90s rolled around, I was in my mid-30s/early40s, with four kids (then five, then six, then seven). So I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention. But the Eurhythmics' 'Sweet Dreams' made one of my mix CDs. . .

    1. I missed a lot of the 90’s due to childbirth, etc. I only discovered Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens when they were in reruns on TBS. But I had the car radio to keep me company!

  6. That picture your husband took is awesome! Sounds like a really fun concert!

  7. Bijoux, I admit to knowing absolutely nothing about 90s groups, so this post was a real education, which is always a good thing. I grew up listening to 60s music and really enjoy listening to tunes from the 50s. Thanks to my parent's I really like 30s and 40s as well.

  8. I do love Third Eye, but have never heard of Arizona and I do recognize Yellowcard's song, but if I had a gun to my head, I wouldn't have been able to name them.
I love that you guys had such great seats too. Also, I hate those clear purses. Goodness. No one needs to see my Burts bees lip balm, gum and eyedrops. 😜
My fave 90's bands were probably RHCP, Hootie & TBF, The Counting Crows and obviously DMB.

    1. Arizona was new to us, but we really enjoyed them. My husband feels like, if we’re going to bother going to a concert, he wants to see the band up close and not on a screen. It’s rough on the ears though. I refuse to use the see through purses. So invasive and they still make you open it and look inside, so WHY? I like RHCP, too, but hubby isn’t a fan. DMB fans Unite!

  9. I was a U2 fan. And I loved Counting Crows (I cheated and read Suz' comment because I suck at music trivia, even if it just means recalling who I liked). The concert sounds like fun esp since it was outdoor on a nice night. The clear purse thing annoys me. Mini has a college friend who bought little containers that look like tampons but are actually alcohol shots. What will they think of next?

    1. U2 spanned a lot of decades. They were my fave for a long time. We saw Counting Crows last year. It was a very mellow and chill experience. I’ve never been a shot drinker, so that would not appeal to me. AND I’d be embarrassed to be walking around with what looked like tampons fully exposed!

  10. It's hard to pick just one but I gotta' go with Blink182. My kids went to their concerts every year and they sang all of the songs all of the time. I miss that. - Your concert, man, what a fantastic time!!! 3eB has so many great songs. I think Semi Charmed Life is my favorite with Jumper a close second. The opening bands are good too. I liked them both but Yellowcard a little bit more. - I'm so happy you got to go to this concert. What a blast!

    1. Blink 182 is such a great band! I love that your kids sang their songs all the time! I think the only group my kids were united on was old school Fleetwood Mac. We took them to that concert when my oldest was in HS. My son, who was probably only 13 at the time, still says it was one of his best concerts ever❣️ Rock on, Mimi!

    2. Wow. Your kids are so lucky! Seeing Fleetwood Mac is epic! You guys win the parents of the year award!

    3. They probably would disagree, but thanks! LOL!

  11. There aren't many 1990s bands I've even heard of - or heard. The bands and singers I like go way back -like Bonnie Raitt and Annie Lennox and Sheryl Crow. Good that you had such great seats for Third Eye Blind.

  12. I'm never very aware of bands until it's years later. This post proves that these groups are new to me. I'm with Nick [above] about singers I like. Am pleased you had a great time.

  13. Great Post, my friend! Brought back some fantastic memories. I loved these guys, but I've gotta say- I'm totally stuck on the likes of Alice in Chains, STP, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Cranberries, etc. more than anything. I'm also stuck in that era as far as my (amateur) guitar skills, and it seems I'm unable/unwilling to work at/learn anything new past these bands. I've also been Youtubing lots of old ELO live footage as they were one of my most favorites to listen to growing up.

    1. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE ELO and can't wait for their tour. I remember specific moments in my life when I was a little kid and their songs came on the radio. So fun to hear those old songs live. Your musical tastes are more grunge/metal than mine, but I will always stand by the Cranberries' Zombie being one of the greatest songs of all time (or in the top 10)!

  15. Hey, Bijoux, sounds like you had a great time! And that photo your husband took is fabulous. I can't comment on the performers because--being a certified geezer--I don't them. (I know of Third Eye Blind, but only the name.)

I'm off to YouTube to get educated!

  16. If he is 60 then that means I am ... What? No way? We are all getting old and sometimes surprised that the people we admired and loved are not getting any younger. Glad you and the hubby had a good time.

  17. I loved (well still do) Third Eye Blind back in the 90's. I've said it before, but it makes my heart happy that those bands are still touring. The guitar pic I thought was a professional shot. Well done to your hubby capturing that!
My favorite band in the 90's was Matchbox 20 closely followed by Goo Goo Dolls. I liked Live (Lightning Crashes was on repeat a lot!) and some Chili Peppers, though the last few years I tend to skip their songs when I'm listening to Apple Music.

    1. Hubby was quite pleased with himself! 🤓 I mentioned it above, but my oldest daughter says Matchbox 20 was the best concert she’s ever been. I love Name by Goo Goo Dolls and of course, Lightening Crashes by Live! I still like the RHCP, but I understand getting tired of a band. I feel that way about the Police and a few others that I used to love.

    2. Jason and I went to Matchbox 20 before Covid hit. They definitely put on a great show! I wish they would tour with GooGoo Dolls again. I think they did once before, but I hold out hope they’ll do it again some day.

    3. That would be a FANTASTIC show! Here's hoping . . .

  18. You're making me feel old. I don't know who any of those groups are. I listen to oldies...60's music and or even older, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra etc. Sounds like you had a good time though. It's been years and years since I've been to a concert and I don't remember who it was....it was before hubby and I were married, and we celebrated our 52nd last month........soooooo, as I said years!

  19. I'm loving this memory lane your sending so many of us down with the old bands. Too bad Yellowcard didn't do it for you. (Never heard of them.) But that's a super sweet story about the guy saying he never dreamed he'd be performing with them some day. Good for them. ~Betsy

Sorry I've been MIA for almost 2 weeks. My internet was out and I had a hard time getting on blogs with my phone. But it's fixed now and I'm making my way around to all the blogs I love.
