September saw us rewinding it back to the '70's with two great concerts:
First up was Squeeze, formed in 1973 in South London. Founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tillbrook still remain, though the band has gone through many alterations. We had third row seats, allowing eye contact with many of the performers, which is always exhilerating.
You might be saying, "Bijoux, I've never heard of Squeeze." I'm thinking that if you've listened to the radio in the last 40 years, you have to be familiar with this gem. The lyric, 'I said to my reflection, let's get out of this place' is probably the lyric I repeat to myself the most. Other hits you may or may not know: Black Coffee in Bed, Hourglass, Pulling Mussels from the Shell.
In the highlight of the night, the keyboardist broke out an accordion and danced all over the stage. His purple velour suit and black and white oxford-like shoes only added to the hilarity.
In early 2022, when my husband and I decided we were going to make it a point to see as many older artists as we could (before they kicked the bucket), I said that ELO was my number one bucket list band from the '70's. Unfortunately, when I looked at their touring history, I saw that they hadn't had a concert in Cleveland since 1981!!!!! WHAT?? So, when their Over & Out Tour was announced earlier this year and we saw that they had a show in Cleveland, we jumped on it!
Jeff Lynne, pictured here, is the only remaining original member. ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) was formed in 1970 in Birmingham, England. Jeff is 78 years old and wrote all their hits. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ELO is known for their great melodies, epic song structures, and grand orchestrations, as well as adding disco and electronic elements into their unique form of rock and roll. They had 15 Top 20 hits. The set list for our night was 20 songs, aptly beginning with 'One More Time' and ending with 'Mr. Blue Sky' in the encore.
The graphics were 'out of this world' featuring their iconic spaceship. The 13-piece band included two cellists, a violinist, and two backup vocalists (one who appeared to be an opera singer). A fun bit of trivia: In the song, 'Don't Bring Me Down,' Jeff wrote in the German word GroB as a filler, but everyone who heard it thought he was singing Bruce, so he went with it! In a podcast I listened to, he said he didn't want to be 'the odd man out.'
I found this compilation of our concert that night. I don't expect you to watch the entire 30 minutes, but you can fast forward to catch a variety of the hits and I'm guessing some of you will be like me and know the words to every song. I got a little misty eyed at the end. My husband and I sing Mr. Blue Sky on many long, dark winter days in the CLE.
Thank you to these bands for over 50 years of great music!
What a great trip down memory lane! Squeeze and ELO are classics. I love how music connects us to special moments. Thanks for sharing your fun experience!
Okay, first I have to say....THESE PHOTOS ARE AWESOME! They made me feel as if I were there. The graphics are amazing!
Yes, I've heard of Squeeze, and of course, the fabulous ELO!
And I can't tell you how many great memories came back to me while watching the videos. Isn't it something how hearing songs from the past brings you right back there?
Some of my favorite ELO songs - Livin' Thing, Turn To Stone, All Over The World.
Thanks so much for sharing, my friend. Very much enjoyed!
Thanks, Ron! I DO love how songs can take you back. Good times, for sure. Those are some great favorites. I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite of theirs, but Mr. Blue Sky ranks up there. I love the general happy mood of the song, and the transition at the end is marvelous to me. It's raining this week, so I could go for some Mr. Blue Sky right now!
I've told many stories about seeing McCartney in concert (4 times!), which was quite a thrill. About half of his concert was Beatles tunes, about a quarter Wings stuff, and rest was his 'newer' songs, and a few covers from the 50s/60s. I had a chance to see Simon & Garfunkel and the Stones, both of 'em right here in OurTown, but I missed them. I remember ELO; best version of 'Roll Over Beethoven' ever. The twin cellos on stage were uber-cool. Jeff Lynne was a friend of George Harrison's, and he played a big role in the Concert for George after he died.
Speaking of the Stones, they played here this summer and everyone that went said it was outstanding, with Mick in his element. We were sorry that we missed it. Who knows if he'll ever play here again. And now that Aerosmith has cancelled their tour, they might be one we will never see, too. I did know about Lynne's friendship with Harrison. He collaborated with a lot of the greats.
This looks like so much fun. I'm so happy for you that one of your fav bands came to your area. I'm not great at knowing who sings what or what the name of songs are, but I do like music. I'm not a big concert goer though. I can't explain it. I'm familiar with some of these songs, like Don't Bring Me Down. The video clip is amazing. What a great looking show.
My husband and I are always shocked that people our age (and younger) do not know the same artists as we do. Music was probably the most important part of my life when I was a teen/20's and seemed to be that way for all of my friends. But yeah, I get not having a desire to go to concerts. It can be chaotic and loud.
I can take or leave Squeeze, but I'm a huge ELO fan (as is Tara). Since they were playing in Cleveland over our anniversary weekend, we strongly considered buying tickets and turning it into a mini-getaway, but alas, we ended up sticking closer to home instead. They're also playing in St. Paul this weekend, our second choice, but Tara will be out of town. Bummer! I'd love to see them while I still have a chance, as Jeff obviously is getting up there in years. He still sounds great though!
The Squeeze show was much better than I thought it would be. They really seemed to be having a good time and the crowd just loved them. Super fun night. What a bummer that you are missing ELO. I hate to tell you, but it's their Over and Out Tour, so you won't be seeing them. I hope that youtube highlights video can suffice :)
I love that you and your husband get to experience so many amazing concerts together! Mike and I were seriously considering a last-minute trip to see ELO, but we had plans this weekend and couldn’t quite squeeze it in (see what I did there?). So glad you had a great time!
I saw that you went to Cbus over the weekend, so that must have been fun. We had a blast at the concerts this month. We have one more coming up in October, but it's a tribute band. We are still excited, though. That's it for the year, so I hope some other bands start announcing their tours for 2025. I'm dying to see Tears for Fears. Good friends of ours are flying to Vegas to see them in a few weeks. So jealous!
What an incredible trip back to the '70s! It sounds like Squeeze put on a fantastic show, especially with that memorable accordion performance! I can only imagine the energy from being so close to the stage. Seeing ELO on your bucket list must have been such an exciting moment too, especially after such a long wait for them to return to Cleveland! Wow. That is so cool, Bijoux! I'm glad you and your hubby decided to make a point to see these rockers while you still can. I'm so impressed that they're touring again (or still???) but not to Cleveland since 1981 for ELO? What's up with that?? I'm so happy for you that you got to see them! What fun!
You’re my only anonymous poster! I think a lot of bands are doing farewell tours these days. Might have been brought on by the pandemic, but who knows?
Wow, what a blast from the past! These bands are legends and I'm so glad you got to see them.
While I loved ELO, I was so-so on Squeeze back in the day, but, thanks to you, I'm going to give them another listen. Heck, I was younger back then and maybe I missed something.
Squeeze has a different sound, for sure. I didn’t know many of their songs, but they put on a great show and now I realize I missed put on their music all these years.
I'll be honest and say I am not familiar with either of these bands, but I think it's awesome that they can still draw a crowd after all these years. You always take the best pics at the concerts you attend. Even if I don't know the band, your pics make me feel like I'm right there in the 3rd row jamming out with you!
Awesome. Glad you had a great time at the concerts and you go to see the one band that was tops on your list. I am more familiar with ELO but I have heard of Squeeze and "Tempted."
Ok, Whippersnapper. I’m joking, but I’m glad you’ve heard Tempted because I cant imagine anyone not having heard that if they have listened to any amount of radio.
I LOVE SQUEEZE!! And ELO is always been a fave: 78 years old and still performing? We need to know his secret. I love that you guys saw both of these iconic bands; you're always having All The Fun! Great photos too.
Wasn't Jeff in the Traveling Wilburies...or has my 75-year-old mind mixed it up? Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Jeff and George Harrison ? I am probably wrong, but I surely liked them, and all their orignal bands, as well!
What a great trip down memory lane! Squeeze and ELO are classics. I love how music connects us to special moments. Thanks for sharing your fun experience!

DeleteI loved ELO when I was a teenager.
ReplyDeleteThey were iconic!
DeleteOh I love ELO! It's such great music, it always puts me in such a good mood. How fun for you guys!
ReplyDeleteYou're right that it's feel good music! We had a blast.

DeleteHow fun! Admittedly I don't know a lot of the bands you write about but I do know ELO and always loved their music !
ReplyDeleteThey are classic 1970's!

ReplyDeleteThey were both such memorable performances. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteHow awesome!! Squeeze wasn't a favorite but ELO of course was. I'm so glad you are enjoying seeing all of the concerts you can. What a fun time.
ReplyDeleteIt’s been fun just to have something in the calendar to look forward to!
DeleteThis looks like so much fun. You know how to rock out consistently over the years.
ReplyDeleteI’ve loved music since birth, so it’s a lot of decades to choose from 🤓

ReplyDeleteAch. Forgot: It's Betsy. Or could you tell? :)
DeleteYou’re my only anonymous poster! I think a lot of bands are doing farewell tours these days. Might have been brought on by the pandemic, but who knows?
DeleteThought of you when I heard on the radio today that Green Day and Smashing Pumpkins are coming to town. That's tempting for me.
DeleteThat would be epic! Though I honestly don’t like Green Day anymore. Still a Smashing Pumpkins fan!
DeleteIt bothers me that GD is billed ahead of SP. I think that's in reverse. I would rather see SP than GD also.
DeleteWow, what a blast from the past! These bands are legends and I'm so glad you got to see them.

ReplyDeleteI am SHOCKED, yes SHOCKED that you don't know ELO!!!!! They had 15 hits! Where you been, Theresa??? I hope you're having a great week!
DeleteApparently I live under a rock. I'm off to Google some of their hits now!
DeletePlease tell me you recognize some of their songs.
DeleteAwesome. Glad you had a great time at the concerts and you go to see the one band that was tops on your list. I am more familiar with ELO but I have heard of Squeeze and "Tempted."
