Photo Friday: Dinosaurs, Hippies, Wieners and Breaking & Entering . . . All In One Post!

This is Part 2 of my extended family trip to the Finger Lakes, where I show you what we did that didn't involve waterfalls:

While the adult children enjoyed a wine tasting at Castle Grisch Winery, my husband and I stayed with the grandkids to enjoy the winery's very strange outdoor display. I believe it's part of a light show at Christmas, but it did not disappoint in July.

As you can see, the dinosaurs were enormous. The kids enjoyed going inside the dinosaur eggs for photos. Besides The Lost World, there was also an Asian themed area with a dragon and pagoda. All very bizarre but wonderful.

A trip to the Finger Lakes would not be complete without a trip to FLX Wienery, which specializes in gourmet hot dogs. My grandson thoroughly enjoyed his Peanut Butter & Bacon dog. I don't eat hot dogs, but didn't want to be a party pooper, so I ordered The Kraut, hoping the probiotics would combat everything else.

There are a number of dairy farms that have cheese tastings available. This farm was the Lively Run Goat farm, where you can feed the goats and eat their cheese.

My oldest daughter also took her kids to Shtayburne Farm Creamery where you can see how large the cheese flights were. Also, this cat was apparently a real pest.

One day, we drove to Corning to visit the Corning Glass Museum, which has the world's largest collection of glass. It was a unique experience, seeing glassware from previous centuries, along with famous artist's works, like this Tiffany glass window.

I think this was the world's largest punchbowl, or something like that.

The kids really enjoyed all the different glass demonstrations.

Another day, we drove to Ithaca to visit the Cornell Botanical Gardens. We had stopped at a different children's garden first, which was sort of lame. We should have spent the entire afternoon at Cornell. This was a sculpture in one of the gardens. The kids liked the herb garden the best, because they could smell everything.

One of my granddaughters turned 3 on the trip, so to celebrate, we went to the Spotted Duck Creamery, where you can visit ducks and eat their duck egg ice cream. This is the flight that I split with my spouse. People have asked if it tasted different and I will say that I did notice a slight waxy feel on the tongue, but no discernible difference in flavor.

Another place that some of the others visited (I did not) was the Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion. Kari, it was listed as one of the top gardens in the US, according to a link you posted a few months back. Honestly, my kids thought it was just okay.

What do my husband and I really go to the Finger Lakes to do? That would be wine tasting. We made it to 7 on this trip. We are slowing down. On our 25th anniversary trip to the Finger Lakes, we visited 25 wineries. There are 130 in all.

We finally made it to Silver Thread this time. It's a tiny place down a dirt road and sits right on Seneca Lake.

I did their Wine & Chocolate tasting and it was fabulous.

We also made it to Silver Springs, rated #1 on Trip Advisor. The owner and winemaker is quite the character and we had the pleasure of him pouring for us and spending 30 minutes telling us all about his wines and career.

Then there was the day that we decided to check out a new winery called Six Eighty. It was a last minute decision, without much research. We just plugged in the address to google maps in the car and followed it till it said 'You've arrived.' There was one of those tall skinny flags that wave OPEN next to the parking area. I walked up the steps to the building, opened the door, and walked in . . . to someone's family room?? There was a TV, couch and various shoes lying upturned on the floor. I did a quick U-turn into my husband and told him, "I think we're in someone's house!!!!" You might say we flew back down the steps and ran to the car. Once safely in the car, we were like WTH?? That's when we noticed the long driveway that wound behind the building and up a hill. Here's the view from the deck of the winery looking out at the house (orange roof) that I unknowingly broke into. As it was unlocked, maybe the charges would have been reduced to trespassing?

It will make for a fun family story for years to come.

Which activity would you have enjoyed the most?

  1. My nephews would go NUTS at the dino park there. How cool is that place!?

Maybe the cat knows that is some quality cheese and hopes by being a pest it will get a few free samples from the guests. Little freeloading cutie LOL

I've never tried duck egg anything before, but I have a friend who sells her duck eggs on Facebook. I've often wondered if there was a difference in consistency or taste with swapping out chicken eggs for duck or even goose eggs.

OMG, that was a WTH moment breaking into someone's home. I wouldn't be surprised if it's happened to them before. It does sound like a confusing entrance. I crashed a party once unwittingly. We were on a Halloween scavenger hunt where you start at the pet shelter. They give you clues and you drive around until you land at a haunted house/haunted woods. By the end of the night you've done 3 or 4 houses, then end up at the final station for snacks and drinks. Well, we parked the car, walked into the gathering, smiling at people while on the hunt for some cider and snacks, only to realize the party guests were all walking around with booze. Definitely something the pet refuge would not be serving to families. We turned our butts around so fast and got back in our car. Turns out, the last stop was a block further down the road, so I have a feeling that we weren't the only ones crashing the party that night.

    1. The dinosaur place was so strange, being at the entrance to a winery. I don’t know the history, but it looked like it had been there a while and is popular at Christmas with their light show.

I can totally see mistaking one outdoor Halloween party for another. That’s funny that booze would be your only clue, but if it was a public scavenger hunt, it’s not like you knew other people! LOL! Funny stuff!

  2. That first photo of your grandkids standing in front of the display is so cute! And OMG....those dinosaurs looks so REAL! It looks like they're on the set of the movie, "Jurassic Park!"

I don't eat hot dogs either, but if I did, I would have ordered The Kraut as well because I love kraut. FYI - Trader Joe's started carrying their own brand (in the cold section of the store) and it's DEEEELICIOUS. And it's got sliced pickles in it as well. Packed with probiotics.

Your nephew with the goats. ADORABLE!

Those cheese flights looked amazing. I would have enjoyed that because I'm a cheese-lover.

And ooooooh...I would enjoyed the Dutch Mint duck egg ice cream.

That photo of you and your husband standing in front of the cork screw is stellar! I love the view of the background.

And OMG...I laughed so hard at your breaking and entering story! - "As it was unlocked, maybe the charges would have been reduced to trespassing?" - LOL!

That final photo of the sunset/sunrise is stunning! And judging from your photos, it looks like you had perfect weather on your family trip to the Finger Lakes.

I think I would have mostly enjoyed the winery visits and taste-testing. Are you surprised by that? Ha!

Thanks for part 2. Really enjoyed it. Have a fabulous weekend! X

    1. I love sauerkraut, too. Even as a kid, I loved it over mashed potatoes. Most people think that’s weird, but it’s delicious! Wasn’t that giant corkscrew a clever photo op for that winery? Wine tasting is always on my list of favorite activities. Especially when paired with cheese or chocolate! The breaking and entering was crazy. I’m shocked that no one came running out when I opened the door. It was unlocked, so they must have been home? So weird. Have a great weekend yourself!

  3. Wine tasting! That looks like a lot of fun and wow, look at that giant corkscrew! How fun that trip sounds. I know my kids would have loved that dinosaur display when they were little. Those are all great photos, and it's so nice to see a photo of you! I don't think I've seen one before, it's nice to put a face to the writing!

    1. It was a really fun trip! The dinosaur display was a definite hit. I don't usually post phots, but I'm surprised you haven't seen one before? I knew you'd appreciate the wine tastings!

  4. Your trip sounds like so much fun! The dinosaur display and glass museum must have been amazing to see. The hot dog and ice cream flavors look so unique!

    1. It was a blast. The Corning Glass Museum is a must if you are in that area of New York.

  5. Dinosaurs and goats and punchbowls. Those are the things that call to me here. Of course I'd be happy to do anything while on vacation around the Finger Lakes. It all looks like fun.

    1. The punch bowl was amazing. There were so many fascinating exhibits, like really cool glass paperweights and wine glasses from the 1600's.

  6. OMG, I can't believe you broke into somebody's house. That's hilarious!! Would've been even better if you helped yourself to wine in their fridge. If I ran a business at the end of a long driveway, I'm pretty sure I'd keep my front door locked. Just sayin'.

The wineries would be great, but I'd be all over the wienery. Specifically the K-Town.

    1. I can’t believe I did that either. Flip flops lying by the door was my first clue! We were split up at three different tables at the wienery, so I didn’t see what everyone else ordered, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was one or two K-Towns. It was a thumbs up from everyone.

  7. Oh wow! You did a lot on your family vacation! Looks like a great time! That's too funny about you walking into that house! Doesn't sound like there was very clear signage so you have to wonder if it's happened before! I probably would have enjoyed the Castle Gritch Winery with the grandkids the most!

    1. We always are go go go on trips. Nobody really likes to relax in our family🤣 Yeah, the fact that there was a large OPEN flag across the driveway from that house is NOT clear signage. I did enjoy all the times I got to spend with the grands. Teaching my grandson how to play Candy Land was the best.

  8. THERE IS A MANSION NAMED AFTER ME????
    Okay, sorry. Where were we?
I'm not a big hot dog fan either, but when at a wienery, it calls for a wiener.
That cat clearly wants his tip.
What a great picture of you and your husband! You look so good! I'm so happy I get to see your beautiful face more often in posts. ❤️
Breaking into someone's house sounds exactly like something that would totally happen to us. 🤣

    1. I just remember a ‘Best USA Gardens’ link you posted a few months back and Sonnenberg was listed. But my daughters were not impressed 🤷‍♀️ I skipped it and went to wineries instead. It was our anniversary!
Aww, thanks! I liked the picture in front of the giant corkscrew. I look best from afar🤣🤣🤣 And I’m sort of surprised neither of us have broken into anyone’s house before. I have a feeling you and I together would be a terror 🥳Although I did break into a cabin at Girl Scout camp, but that’s a story for another day.

  11. What a fun trip. I would be partial to ice cream tastings and if I had grandkids (which I don't and it would be nice if people would stop asking me if my daycare gang consists of grandkids, ugh), I'd love to see them enjoy the dinosaur stuff. I'd probably only break into a house if I'd attended a few wine tastings too many. Ha. That's such a funny story. Great pictures.

    1. The crazy part was that it was our only wine tasting that day. We hadn’t planned on it; it was on our way back from somewhere and Middle Child left with our oldest, so we thought we’d take advantage of some together time. Our kids had a good laugh when we got back to the house…..Mom almost went to jail!

  12. Looks like both the kids and adults had a great time on this family getaway. Of course, the wine tastings would have appealed to us and that last bit about mistaking someone's home for the winery makes for a great story, Bijoux. Also so nice to "see" you and your husband and that final photo was beautiful!

  13. I would love to look round the glass museum. I would also like the outdoor display of prehistoric creatures. Being an ice cream buff, I would also enjoy the duck egg ice cream. Jenny and I have stopped drinking wine, though we might have made an exception for Silver Springs! And yes, what a great story about walking into someone's home by mistake!

  14. Remind me to lock our doors if (God knows why) you ever come to OurTown. . . ;)
Near my hometown, Up North, there was (still is?) a 'dinosaur park', with life-size concrete dinosaur statues. It's a bit corn-ball these days, but it's a nice walk in the woods. . .
Coming from a town with a sizable Polish population, kraut-and-kielbasa was one of our staples growing up. . .
But honestly, if I went to the Finger Lakes, I'd be tempted just to sit on the porch and gaze at the beauty of the lake. . .

    1. 🤣🤣🤣Yes, keep your doors locked! I’ll be in your state next year! We have a run down concrete dinosaur park somewhere near Cedar Point that we took our kids to in the ‘90’s and even they thought it was lame. Enjoying the view is the best part of staying on a lake.

  15. This is all speaking my love language. Ice cream, cheese and wine. Yes please!! I love all of your photos. I'm sure you all made a lot of fun memories. Especially you breaking and entering. That is hilarious. And you are correct on mashed potatoes and kraut. I've loved it since I was a kid also. I picked up a dozen duck eggs from a farmer a couple of weeks ago. I think they are amazing for baking but I didn't care for the texture when I scrambled them. TBG liked them, but I'll pass. Have a great week!!

    1. Yes! That’s the trifecta! But I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone else who loves kraut and mashed potatoes, so we are sisters now! That’s interesting about the texture in scrambled eggs. By any chance, did it seem waxy? As in, it left a strange coating in your mouth? That’s what I noticed. I didn’t know people used them for baking.

    2. My German grandfather ate the kraut and mashed potatoes, so my grandmother made them often and I love them. The eggs didn't really leave a waxy coating but the texture was not like chicken eggs.

    3. My mom’s father was German, so that must be how it started for our family, too.

  16. Oh the Finger Lakes looks like a brilliant place to visit. You did so many fun things. Got love all that Cheese last fall I went to a cheese farm in France as it is owned by my step brothers wife's brother in law. The goats are great when I was in Maine this summer I almost did goat yoga.

  17. I'M DYING THAT YOU WALKED INTO SOMEONE'S HOUSE! OMG. That is hilarious! (I did it a few years ago and blogged about it---still thankful I didn't get shot!)
Seven wineries? I'm so proud of you guys. 🤣 That would be a lot of fun. Of course, the gardens too, those are my favorite.
I honestly thought you misspelled FLX Wienery and meant FLX Winery. I've never heard of a weinery, but of course I would have ordered a 'tasting'.
Duck egg ice cream? Is that for real?
I have an antique Cut Crystal bowl that was my Grandmas and it resembles the XL punch bowl, but of course, it's normal sized. I would have enjoyed the Corning Museum immensely.

    1. Well, I thought the same thing . . . THANKFUL I didn't get shot! I still can't believe no one even seemed to notice?? Was no one home, but the door was unlocked?? It was such an odd building to be a house. There was no garage and it clearly had a parking area. But the overturned flip flops on the rug and the coffee table and TV sure looked like a house!
I'm guessing it's the only 'wienery' in America? But who knows?? Duck egg ice cream is a real thing! The glass museum was very interesting and it was free for those 17 and under! That was a nice surprise.

  18. Loved the dinosaur display--looks so cool! And you're killing me with all the food (and drink) I'm trying to avoid--like all that wonderful cheese (my weakness!), wine and duck egg ice cream.

I don't usually eat hot dogs either, but put "gourmet" in front of just about anything and I'll give it a try.

It's so wild that you walked into somebody's house. Just glad you didn't run into any wacky homeowner. Hey, it's an honest mistake!

Lovely pictures of you and the grandkids. I'm so glad you guys had such a great time!
