Weird and Wonderful Wednesday: Wildlife, Scams, and A Very Vexed Reader

If you're looking for crazy tidbits, you are in the right place:

While I was babysitting, I watched my recently turned three year old granddaughter color this hedgehog. I believe she's a better colorer than me. Also, I just now discovered that Blogger does not recognize the word, 'colorer.'

I took a peek into my grandson's room and saw this on his desk. So far, his first-grade year has been full of insanity, but that's another post.

During a walk, I came across this plywood covering a hole. It looked like two faces staring at me.

Also on the walk, a car without a hood. Do people just drive around like this?

I was looking out the window and saw our old, barred owl friend swoop in. He was camera shy.

Last week, I read a wonderful period piece called I Capture the Castle. It was written by Dodie Smith and set in 1930's England. A previous reader of this library book was up in arms throughout the book. Here, she didn't believe a gramophone was possible in a house without electricity.

She also disliked the father of the main character for the way he treated his 20 year old daughter.

'This father really is a dud'

The reader really had an issue with the treatment of the main character.  Maybe this person has never read a book set in a different time and place? I daresay that the characters in this book would be more appalled by today's society!

I pulled into my driveway last week and found these two deer taking a mid-day fiesta. Can you find them?

Let's see . . . what helped me identify this as a 'smishing?' Could it be the long, run-on sentence? Asking me to click a link? Or the US Postal team wishing me a wonderful day? LOL!

Wishing Everyone a Wild & Wonderful Wednesday!

  1. Wow, her coloring skills are amazing, especially for being 3! That is sad that your grandson is having a tough year. 1st graders shouldn't have so much stress. That's crazy. Who writes in a library book?? Yes, I agree that the characters would be appalled by today's standards for society. I mean can you imagine them seeing people at the grocery store with pajama's on? The deer are so cute but I am furious with ours. They have eaten every single flower and bud off of my two large mums on the front porch. I hope you have a great rest of the week.

    1. I often think about what my grandparents would think about all that is going on in the world today. They had so much go on in their lifetime, from technology (cars, planes, modern appliances) to two world wars. I imagine they'd be most disturbed by people's appearances and all the mental health issues in society.

  2. She is an expert colorer. I'm concerned about what is running amuck in 1st grade. Yikes. The library book writing - what even? Plus, it was the sign of the times. I saw the two faces in the piece of wood right away. I do see the deer. The one on the right I saw right away, the other one took me a second. So beautiful. Is that your yard? I've been reading a book with an owl in it to my daycare crew. Once I finally score a bookcase we will have more books out. I keep telling them that I can hear an owl in a tree in my front yard every night. I haven't seen it yet, but the hoot is loud.

My wacky Tuesday - also a bird story. I was closing my eyes on the deck in the lounge chair during naps yesterday for a few minutes before the phone issue. A woodpecker was SO loud. I thought it was in the tree right next to me. Then I heard neighbors talking. The woodpecker was on the side of my neighbors house. He'd drilled a hole in their wood siding the size of an orange. The owner said he'd filled it earlier that morning, but the bird came back and boom - there a sizeable hole. Unbelievable.

    1. There was a violent kid in his classroom (yes, first grade) but fortunately, he was somehow removed from the school. I'm not sure how they did that, with it being a public school. Then, a bullet was found on my grandson's bus (the only route is K-3) so that was disturbing! A policeman searched their bookbags for a week and rode the bus. No answers!

Yes, that's my backyard. We have a natural rock wall and then woods behind us. It's very private, which we love. I wonder what sort of owl is in your yard? We only seem to get barred owls here. They do the 'Who Cooks For You' call.

Woodpeckers are SO loud, but that's insane that it drilled a hole that big, that fast!!!! Someone needs to figure out a way to have woodpeckers on construction crews!

  3. "Oh crap"- that's definitely an upgrade from 'Screw It, I'm Eating Tater Tots!' I might just start renaming my posts from now on. 😄
I'm a huge fan of finding faces in random things. ❤️
Maybe going hoodless is the next big trend? 🤣
I love discovering notes left in library books—unless they’re gross, then I could do without them.
And yes, I got one of those spam texts last week too! Grrr...

    1. My daughter asked him about it, but he claimed he didn't remember why he wrote it. Sure! LOL! I'd guess it had to do with his sisters! I normally do enjoy notes in library books, but this person was a bit too negative for my liking.

  4. Your little granddaughter certainly is a good colorer! I do see the faces on the plywood. Why bother to read a book if it frustrates you so much like whoever wrote in the book you were reading! Cool to see the deer! That test message for sure is a scan! It's rare to see a postal worker wish you a wonderful day!

  5. I agree with the reader - I HATED that father!!! I was pleased when they locked him in the tower. If only they had left him there forever.
Owls are such cool birds! They amaze me, honestly.

    1. Yeah, the father was a real loser, but I'm guessing none of us would be thrilled to have fathers from the 1930's. Owls are the best bird, for sure!

  7. The hedgehog photo is adorable! Hedgehog's are the cutest little things. And your right, she is a talented little colorer! (*note: blogger did not recognize that word when I typed it, you're right!)

The "Oh crap" made me laugh out loud!

They DO look like two faces because before I read what you wrote beneath the photo, that's exactly what I thought - TWO FACES.

I'm curious...I wonder what the heck happened to the hood on that car?!? Did someone steal it? Or perhaps they got into an accident and the hood was the only thing damaged?!?

And speaking of owls, this morning while surfing through Instagram, someone posted a video of a mama owl and her little owl babies. So cute!

Why would someone feel they had the right to WRITE their thoughts in a book? Geesh!

"I daresay that the characters in this book would be more appalled by today's society!" - you are so right about that.

OMG, I get those SAME spam texts too. And I get them a lot, in spite of labeling them as SPAM and BLOCKING them.

Hope you had a faaaaaaabulous Wednesday, my friend! X

The weather is gorgeous here today - bright blue, cloudless sky, and 69 degrees!

    1. I like hedgehogs, too. AND owls! There are a lot of adorable animals, aren’t there? I’ve been watching sloth videos on TikTok. They are so interesting!

I know! The Oh Crap note made me laugh out loud. He’s such a sweet, earnest boy that it really was not what I expected to see.

Who knows about that car? I think it was a visitor because I haven’t seen it since.

The spam texts are out of control. I never give my cell phone number out to businesses, so I always know right away that’s it fake.

My day was not too shabby. I walked this afternoon and the sun felt good, even though I wore long sleeves. I think our high was 61 degrees. Enjoy your upcoming weekend! XO

  8. Deer in your backyard is uber-cool! In the past week, I've had two near-misses of deer running in front of my car. I like your way better. . .

    1. I’ve been hit by deer twice. They actually ran right into my van when I was only going about 25 mph. They really are not very bright.

  9. That's one drawback to reading library books on the Kindle: no notes in the margins! Sometimes, those are as entertaining as the actual read.

I only go hoodless when the weather is especially hot.

  10. I've heard of the book I Capture the Castle though I've never read it. How can people be so selfish as to write their personal comments on the pages of a library book?
I guess the deer are deceptively charming until they start eating everything!
Do you think the car hood was stolen?
I'm curious as to what "oh crap" is referring to.

    1. It was a good book, along the lines of Pride and Prejudice, but not as witty. The deer are nice to look at until they eat all your plants and flowers. I doubt the car hood was stolen because I don’t think it’s something that is sold on the black market.

  11. The plywood eyes are trippy. Kind of freaked by them. The car without a hood is odd. I'd think that'd be illegal, dangerous to everyone on the road. I found the two deer, one high, one low. We live on a forested lot with deer so I may have had an advantage. I'm used to looking for them.

    1. The plywood eyes really are freaky. The deer seem to be out and about more in the fall, probably due to mating season. I was charged by a buck a few years ago, so I’m very leery of them.

  13. She is a good colorer, too bad blogger doesn't like us using the word. The black car looks like a newer model too which is very puzzling as to why someone would drive around like that. We've had a terrible time with deer this year. There are too many of them. One day about 6 wks ago we had 7 in our yard, and when I say we're super residential...we are one block away from a busy 4 lane road that connects to freeways. It's crazy. They really chewed up my plants. I tried to chase them off, but they just looked at me. They eyes on the plywood are creepy. They look like they're staring right at you.

    1. We have a terrible time with deer as well. We live off of a four lane state route, but I think all the parks in the area keep the deer in business. They even eat things that the guides claim they won’t eat, like holly bushes. It’s discouraging to be a gardener here.

  14. How does a 3 year old color better than I do?! My handwriting sucks too, so I'm sure she's more skilled in that than me as well.

I hear owls here, but never see them. We had a hawk come chill on our deck railing a few weeks back. Think it was interested in my indoor kitties.

The deer in the garden would be delightful to come home to. I know some people want them to move along and not eat their plants, but I love wildlife and get excited whenever I see them.

    1. Her coloring is phenomenal and she loves to do it! We only seem to get the barred owls here, and I only ever see one at a time. Hawks are also abundant and I often hear their ‘screeeee’ in the summer. The deer are pests to us!

  15. Your granddaughter is a better colorer than both you and I. I'm sorry, but I had such a giggle at the first graders: OH CRAP. That sums up a lot of my thoughts. 🤣
I just read (audio book) I Capture The Castle in a blogger book club. I agree, the Father was a horrible character, but yes, those characters were so much better than a lot of the people running around the streets today.
The deer and the owl: LOVE
The faces on the wood certainly are giving you the stink eye, which is totally uncalled for.

  18. That is some seriously impressive coloring for a three-year-old! "Oh crap"! Hahaha! Poor little guy. Plywood faces--brilliant. Owls are so great, you lucky girl! Hilarious that someone left notes of outrage in the book! Lots of good stuff here. Your opening line is possibly the best of all: If you're looking for crazy tidbits, you are in the right place. Love it. :) ~b
