Music Monday: You Should Be Dancing

Last September, my spouse and I were talking about music and he made the comment that tribute bands were fine and all of that, but he wasn't going to pay money to see one. Fast forward two months, and we find ourselves at this concert:

He changed his mind! Location, weekend date, and the fact that two out of the three Bee Gees are dead, so it's not like we'll ever have a chance to see them perform. Stayin Alive hails from Canada (thanks, Nicole!) and is considered the #1 Bee Gees tribute band in the world.

For the youngsters amongst my readers, here are the Bee Gees in their heyday: Maurice, Barry, and Robin Gibb. Maurice passed away in 2003 and Robin in 2012. Barry is still alive at age 78. The brothers were known for their high harmonies and catchy melodies and were a big part of the disco craze of the 1970's. HBO MAX is currently running a documentary on their lives, ‘The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.’

The tribute band dressed the part with their late '70's white suits and their voices were spot on. The show began and ended with 'You Should Be Dancing' and the mostly senior citizen crowd took that to heart. I lost count of how many times security had to tell 70-year-old women in disco dresses to get out of the aisles.

The Bee Gees are synonymous with the movie, Saturday Night Fever, but I'd forgotten just how many hits they had. Some of the songs we heard that night: Night Fever, Jive Talking, How Deep Is Your Love, Nights On Broadway, Massachusetts, Fanny Be Tender With My Love (my husband and I discovered that it is both of our favorites), To Love Somebody, More Than a Woman, Tragedy, Too Much Heaven, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and of course, Stayin' Alive.

There was one costume change in which we were treated to many photos and clips of the Bee Gees through the years. It also included their brother, Andy Gibb, which really made me tear up. One of my best friends in high school had the hugest crush on Andy Gibb and I can still picture her Sweet Sixteen birthday party, with the Andy Gibb album playing on the record player in her basement.

Who else had a crush on Andy Gibb? And remembers who he dated? Sadly, he passed away in 1988 at the age of 30 from heart complications due to drug abuse.

Saturday Night Fever was released when I was 14 years old. I was too young to be able to get into an R rated movie, and truth be told, I've never watched the entire film (I know; I'm truly just not a movie person). But here I am at age 14, ready to boogie in my bell bottoms.

The closest thing we had to a Studio 54 discothèque was The Big Apple. This is the ONLY picture of The Big Apple that I could find online. Unfortunately, you also had to be 18. I think by the time I was old enough, it had become the Akron Agora. I remember attending a NYE party there with a group of friends in college in the early '80's. The Akron Agora was a major music venue, hosting the likes of New Order, The Police, Ian Hunter, The Psychedelic Furs, and Men At Work. It closed in 1992.

Here is a compilation of the Stayin Alive show for you to enjoy.

Do you have a favorite Bee Gee's song? Did you ever dance at a disco?

  1. I remember all the grownups talking about Saturday Night Fever and I can still see those posters on my cousin's walls. Doesn't feel that long ago.

    I hope you're doing fine.

  2. I LOVE the Bee Gees and I would 100% be with the 70 year old lady dancing in the aisle. Love them! I would totally go to a tribute band but I'd have to find my girlfriends to go with me, because my husband does not share this love.
Meh, Saturday Night Fever probably doesn't hold up well. I saw it in the 2000s and it didn't hold up then. There is a whole lot of weird gang sex/ kind of rape scenes. It's a lot darker than I thought it would be going in. Mind you it's been a while so it's pretty fuzzy in my brain.

    1. I think my spouse felt like tribute bands = bar cover bands, so you shouldn’t have to pay to see them. But this Stayin Alive group was extremely professional and talented. I think I’ve only seen the dance scenes and when Travolta is walking in his neighborhood. Yeah, I would not like the parts you mentioned!

  3. OMG, I cannot believe you saw that BEE GEES tribute. I would have LOVED every second of it. I grew up and partied in the late 70s and 80s, and the Bee Gees were one of my major favorites. I will sometimes go online and listen to the complete soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever JUST to get a good dose of the BEE GEES! There is not a song they ever did that I didn't love. However, I think if I had to choose just one, it would be, "How Deep is Your Love." I saw the documentary you mentioned and loved it!

" It also included their brother, Andy Gibb, which really made me tear up."

Oh, I would have teared up as well.

Okay, and that photo of your? FAB-U-LOUS! Your bell bottoms ROCK!

I have a future post that I'm planning to post about someone I went to acting school with in NYC, who was in the movie "Saturday Night Fever" - I think you'll enjoy it!

Thanks for such a faaaaaaabulous post, my friend! Brought back a TON of wonderful memories for me!

Yes, every single song of theirs is fabulous. Iconic voices! Such great melodies! I can’t wait for your post on your fellow acting student. How cool to have been in one of the most famous movies of all time! Have a super week, Ron! XO

  4. I think one of my sisters had a Bee Gees album. I am not sure I have enough experience to claim a fav but I do like Jive Talkin. I did not remember that Andy died so young from drug related health issues. I’m so glad the concert was fun. It sounds like a great time.

    2. Sorry - that was me! I commented from my phone this morning while I was on my bike. Things like this are why I usually wait till I get off of the bike to comment. I can't believe he died so young. I don't remember that at all.

  5. Didn't he date Marie Osmond? I loved the Bee Gees!! How awesome to see a group that was spot on with the original. The picture of you is cute. You can tell the era at the time from the clothes and your hair. Thanks for sharing this fun post and reminding me how many songs of theirs I really loved.

    1. Yes! Marie Osmond and after her, Victoria Principal from Dallas. The clothes and the hair crack me up. It was only two years later that big hair came into style. I’m glad you enjoyed the post and their music, too.

    2. Wow I didn't know about Victoria Principal. Interesting.

  6. Oh how I remember them and the disco phase. Thankfully the disco dance phase didn't last too long. Didn't know the song came from Canada. Good to know. I think I might have a tap somewhere of them, gonna have to look at the stacks of them in the basement. Glad you had such a good time.

    1. The song didn't come from Canada. The Bee Gees were from Australia and the tribute band, named Stayin Alive, is from Canada. Disco dancing was an iconic part of our culture!

  7. I LOVE the Bee Gees! So did my dad—his favorite song was Tragedy. There are SO many of their songs I adore. My favorite slow song is How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and for something upbeat, it’s More Than a Woman (though thanks to my brother, I always end up singing “Bald Headed Woman” instead. SIGH. I mean, it does sound like they’re saying that!).

I would absolutely go see a Bee Gees cover band, and you’d find me dancing the entire time.

I never got to dance at a disco, but wow, I would’ve loved experiencing that era as an adult. Unfortunately, I was still just a small human back then. 🤣

    1. Thank you for telling me your dad's favorite song! But aren't all their songs fabulous?? It was so long ago that it was easy to forget just how many songs we knew, even though we were just kids. Bald headed woman - LOL! OMG, I will probably hear that now! Funny story - one of my husband's friends SWEARS that he thought Rock the Casbah was F*ck the Cash Bar! Of course, it's the only way I sing it now!!! You might not have disco danced, but you did have that dance club by the Richland Mall that you and I both danced at!!! I feel as though clubs like that don't even exist anymore. By any chance, did you ever go to Mean Mr. Mustard's on High Street in Columbus? That place was EPIC!!!! I love having you to compare notes with, Kari!

  8. Let me put it this way: at my first wedding, I conspired with the DJ to play "Night Fever," where I busted out some disco moves and even flung my tuxedo jacket into the crowd John Travolta style. So, yes...I'm a HUGE Bee Gees fan! Not only that, but the same tribute show just passed through Madison. I'd thought about going but the timing sadly did not work out. (The MAX document is excellent, by the way. I loved learning that "Jive Talkin'" was inspired by the sound their tires made when driving over a bridge.)

    1. Omg, I just watched that part last night! How crazy was that?? It’s fascinating to learn new facts like that about songs. Like when Sting accidentally sat on the piano in intro to Roxanne. It sounds like you really were a huge Bee Gees fan, even though you must have been an infant when they were popular! 🤣 I can’t believe that same tribute show was so close to you, too. Yeah, sometimes these things don’t work out, but I’m sure they will tour the States again.

  9. I loved the Bee Bees. It's sad that only Barry is still around. Tragedy is my favorite song of theirs. They aren't bad but they aren't the Bee Gees.

  10. I was never a fan of the Bee Gees, my taste was more the Everly Brothers and the Kinks. I share your husband's aversion to tribute bands, I'd rather see the original band or nothing. And I love your bell bottoms - really wild!

    1. Awww, that's too bad that you were not a fan, but music can be very subjective. I still think bell bottoms look better than skinny leg jeans!

  11. Wow, Bijoux, what an awesome post! Sounds like you had a great time. It's hard to believe--and a little scary--to hear about those 70-year-old disco ladies.

I absolutely LOVE that photo of you at 14 years old. I wonder what happened to those bell bottoms...

The Big Apple/Akron Agora sounds like quite a venue. The Police played there?!? Wow!

I had forgotten that Andy Gibb died so young. I don't blame for tearing up.

Saturday Night Fever was shot in my neighborhood of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I totally hated the movie when I saw it back then, but I saw it again a few years ago and I really appreciated the story of a young man who doesn't know what to do next. This was the biggest turnaround I have ever done on a movie.

    Thanks for writing this up!

    1. I never put two and two together, that it was your neighborhood. That is beyond amazing! Interesting that you changed your mind about the movie. I’m sure I would only enjoy the dance sequences. I know, can you believe all the acts that used to come to Akron? Now we’re lucky if bands make the stop in Cleveland. Sigh.

  12. Heh. . . I'm just old enough that I knew the Bee Gees in the late-60s,/early 70s, when they had a VERY different sound; I remember 'I Started a Joke' ('68). So I spent most of their disco years just chuckling and shaking my head. . . ;)

  14. I loved the Bee Gees. That concert is one that I would love to go to! They sound great! I was in my mid to late 20's in the 80's and disco was my jam! I never went to a disco but we disco danced at every family get together! Plus my kids loved to dance disco too although neither one of them would admit it today! I still love 80's disco music to this day and can never stay still whenever I hear it!

I'm glad you and Hubby had such a nice time. I've been pleased with the cover bands I've seen. They seem to do a good job. This: "security had to tell 70-year-old women in disco dresses to get out of the aisles" Hilarious! I'm happy for the amount of fun they were surely having. ~ Betsy

    1. There was both an Akron Agora and a Cleveland Agora. Sad that they are both long gone. There were tons of men and women dressed in ‘70’s attire at the concert because afterwards, there was a disco lounge for an after party and costume? Contest! We did not go. We might have been too young🤣

  17. Sounds like a fantastic night! It's amazing how music can transport us back to different moments in time. The Bee Gees truly left a mark on pop culture, and it must've been such a treat to experience their music live, even through a tribute band. I love how the concert brought back those personal memories, too! Thanks for sharing such a fun and nostalgic experience.

Wow, what a talented family the Gibbs were/are. Can you imagine? Those four boys, all singing so lovely like that?
I'd totally forgotten that Andy died so young; what a pity because he was soooooo talented and soooo handsome. My fave BG songs are How Deep Is Your Love and I wake up most days singing More Than A Woman to myself, you know, just to hype up my day. 🤣 (kidding, but it's a great idea)
I love that fourteen year old picture of you. So stinking cute.

Of course I knew how to Disco Dance(in our house, not at an actual Disco); I had a gay brother, four years older than I and we grew up in the 70's-80's. I was his dance partner!! What a great time to be alive.

  22. Ron has a couple Bee Gees cd's in our collection. I liked them too and would say maybe my favorite is Night Fever. I loved the movie and have seen it many times. The very last scene with Tony/Stephanie, which you won't know not having seen it, is still memorable to me.
I saw Beatlemania as a teenager. And I got Ron tickets quite a few years ago for a popular John Denver tribute band. I wasn't a fan of Denver, just had other musical interests in the 70s, but the tribute show was actually quite enjoyable.
I was at a disco once or twice, but it was a weekend afternoon teenager thing. I still do like quite a bit of old disco music though.

I wasn't a fan of John Denver either, but I bet if I heard a tribute to his music, it would bring back some good memories. Hope you are doing well! XO
