Photo Friday: Holiday Wrap Up 2024

Welcome to 2025! I'm glad you're here. Here's a re-cap of where I've been and what I've been doing over the past six weeks:

In November, we took the grandkids to the Akron Tree Festival. My husband and I have been attending off and on for about 40 years. The trees are decorated by different organizations and sold to benefit Akron Children's Hospital. This Grinch Tree was my favorite this year.

And this was the oddest tree. Most of the trees are not as whimsical as these two.

I met some friends at this pop-up Christmas wine bar. It was so festive that I took my husband the next week.

Two of my granddaughters take dance class, so we attended their holiday recital. Apparently, the 3 year old's class is very small and only one other child showed up for their performance. Hence, it looks like my granddaughter had the stage to herself. She did a great job in front of the crowd of 1100 people.

Middle Child had a holiday piano recital in a beautiful church. She performed Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker.

My 5 year old granddaughter's preschool had a Christmas show that we decided to attend, as these kids aren't getting any younger. This particular grandchild is a hoot and is the biggest joy to be around. She's the one in the green dress with the beautiful red, curly hair. She gave the show everything she had, while the boy to the left looked absolutely miserable the entire time.

In my last post, I talked about my BFF who has the same Walnut Baby Jesus ornament as me, made when we were in elementary school. She sent me this ornament to commemorate our 56 year friendship this year. What a surprise and treat!

Christmas Morning: The Calm Before the Storm

I had attended a friend's Christmas party, where someone brought a lemon ricotta cake for dessert, and I declared it to be one of the best cakes I'd ever tasted. I decided I had to make one for my family to have on Christmas Day. It was good, but didn't seem to be as good as the one at the party.

My husband and I go all out for the Christmas Feast. It's part of our gift to our children/grandchildren. Pictured from left: strawberry pretzel salad (a tradition), chickpea cucumber pomegranate salad, caprese salad wreath. Fruit platter in the middle. Middle Child's 2024 gingerbread house also pictured.

From left: beef tenderloin, cheesy bacon roasted potatoes, pesto panko crusted salmon, roasted asparagus, red wine mushroom sauce for the beef. Not pictured, but also for dessert besides the lemon ricotta cake were a Bûche de Noël (yule log) and an apple caramel walnut pie (both purchased at a bakery).

My husband and I struggle with what to give each other for Christmas. The last few years, it's been consumables. This year he gifted me with these mini bottles of champagne with my favorite dark chocolates (Ghiradelli).

We always host the Cousin Christmas Party, a tradition since the 90's. These would be my children's cousins but also includes their parents (my husband's siblings that he still speaks with) and now the cousins' spouses and cousins' children (actually, only our kids have kids at this point). It's a six-hour fest of games and food. My husband is the king of hosts and always comes up with the games. This year, we had the usual white elephant gift exchange, the Who Am I game, a Survivor style auction, and the above pictured horse race. At the other end of the ping pong table were the rolls of toilet paper that you had to roll to get your horse to win. Some of the names people came up with for their horses . . . Elmer!

To conclude the season, my husband and I have our own tradition of crab legs and champagne, this one from one of favorite Napa wineries, Tank Garage. For New Year's Day, I made my famous homemade sauce (gravy, for you Italians) with penne pasta and a Caesar salad with garlic bread. My son's family came over to watch the Rose Bowl. Go Bucks!!!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! Thanks for being here!

  1. LOVE the Grinch tree! I also love how the presents are wrapped in the same colors. And what a great cause!

Okay, and the pop-up wine bar? FABULOUS! I cannot get over how festive the decorations are. The red and silver look so good together.

"Hence, it looks like my granddaughter had the stage to herself. She did a great job in front of the crowd of 1100 people."

OMG, she is SO cute up there! And I bet you were beaming with pride and joy!

I would have loved to heard Middle Child's piano recital! That's one of my favorite songs from The Nutcracker. Again, I bet you were beaming with pride and joy.

WOW, you have such a musically talented family! That boy standing next to your grandchild DOES look miserable. LOL!

That meal spread looks absolutely delicious! My eyes went directly to that chickpea salad!

    Great gift from your husband!!!

I have never heard of such a game, but I am so intrigue toilet paper rolling part!

Thanks so much for sharing your holiday season with us. Muchly enjoyed! Wishing you and your family all the best in 2025! X

    1. The pop-up was incredible! We like that place anyway because they have such good food (NOT bar food) so it was a nice surprise to see it transformed for the holidays.

Yes, we are always so proud of MiddleChild. She has been taking piano lessons for over 20 years. Isn’t that great that she stuck with it, considering all her challenges? She is on her 6th teacher now. She keeps outlasting them 🤣

Don’t you love a good chickpea salad? They are so versatile. The only thing I’d change is to use fresh pomegranate arils instead of frozen. The frozen ones just don’t cut it, but boy are they convenient.

My husband found that horse race game online. He even used a bell to start the race! You had to roll up the TP to move your horse, but you couldn’t go fast because of the water. If it splashed, it would break the TP and you were out.

Thanks for the well wishes! Happy 2025! XO

  2. So much to love here. We have a tree festival fundraiser here also and I'm always amazed at the creativity. I love the Grinch tree. That pop-up wine bar is so festive. What a fun place for the holidays. All of the photo's of middle child and the grands are so cute. Programs like that are priceless. All of your food looks AMAZING and I'm sure it was delicious. It sounds like your house is the party house and how cool is that? Great gift from your husband. Ghiradelli is the best in my opinion also. Thanks for sharing your holiday, it was so fun to see. Wishing you and your family a very Happy New Year!!

    1. Oh, that’s neat that you have a similar fundraiser. I love the creativity. Some are definitely professional looking, while others are made by Girl Scout troops. All so unique and pretty. Yes, we are now the party house. We are in a central location for everyone, plus we have the most space. We host all the holidays. My husband loves that, though it’s a lot of work for us. He always grills in the summer, which helps. Happy 2025 and thanks for your support all year long!

  3. Wow, what an incredible holiday season you had! The food! The family! The children's performances! I love watching preschool performances, they are SO fun. There's always one kid who's hamming it up and one kid who is grimly wondering why they are even there. Your little granddaughter did great, a stage with just her and one other kid and such a big audience! Wow.
I love yule log, and those salads sound great. I've never had a strawberry pretzel salad. I mean, I like strawberries and I like pretzels so it seems like a winner?
My kids have eight cousins but they aren't close to any of them for a variety of weird, boring, and family-drama reasons. Reading about your cousin party gave me a little pang - I grew up with a ton of cousins and I wish my kids had that same fun experience. Ah well, life, it is what it is, right?
I would adore getting booze and chocolate for Christmas! Perfection!

    1. Preschoolers are so sweet. The 3-5 year range is just the cutest! My family would be so upset if I didn’t make the strawberry pretzel salad. It’s actually a dessert, but we all pretend otherwise. The crust is crushed pretzels and melted butter that you bake in the dish. Then there’s a cream cheese filling and then that’s topped with a strawberry jello and frozen strawberry mixture.

I understand the drama. My in-laws had 13 grands, so my kids have 10 cousins (my sibling never had kids). But since my husband doesn’t have contact with two of his four siblings, we have no contact with their children, either. And neither do the two siblings he’s friends with. It’s messed up, but it seems to be the norm with most people. Sad!

You can never go wrong with champs and chocolate! Happy New Year!

  5. Wow - that is quite the spread. Amazing. My sister hosted this year, but I ended up bringing probably a little more than half of the food. My mom always made a million desserts and I'm trying to keep up the tradition. I love the cousin party, what a great idea. My kids have a billion cousins - close to 20 on each side of the family. I only have 2 cousins who live local and while they don't live very far away, we never get together. I'd love to try to start a cousin gathering like that. The games sound like a blast. What a great idea. The photo of the kid who isn't really into the Christmas show is so funny. I love how the 3 year old still got on stage. They are so cute. The Museum of Science and Industry has an amazing Christmas tree display, representing over 100 countries. (something like that). What a sweet ornament to get from your friend. You two are lucky to have one another. Happy New Year. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Desserts are my favorite part of the holiday food. I’ve had to cutback on sugar year round, but I make the exception in December. I have 21 cousins on my mom’s side, but only keep in touch with two. The majority are quite a bit older than me and spread around the country. I cherish the few memories I have of everyone getting together when my grandparents were alive. They passed away in 1978 and 1987, so that was a long time ago!

I would LOVE to see the trees from around the world!!! How cool is that? Yes, my friend and I really realize how lucky we are. Happy 2025! XO

  6. The Tree festival looks amazing; what a tradition.
I'm glad you had such a great holiday season. (weren't you sick last year? Am I remembering correctly?)
Love seeing your grandkids and your daughter performing for the holidays; that makes it even more special.
How fun that your husband goes all out for the Cousin Party. Being a semi-pro party planner, I can say that is exhausting work and he did a great job! Your Christmas Feast looks amazing....and again, lot of work and dedication on your part(s)
Champagne and Chocolate: He sees you! ❤️
Wishing you guys a blessed 2025.

    1. Great memory, Suz! Yes, I had the flu, which turned into pneumonia from Dec 24th until the end of January last season. It was the worst, though I did binge The Traitors, which kept me sane 🤣

My husband has always been the Host with the Most. He loves planning, shopping, and then being in charge of the whole thing. He’s the type of person who I like to complain always has to ‘overdo it’ but that’s part of his charm 🤷‍♀️🤣

Yes, he definitely sees me! It took a while 🤔🤣 Kidding! Happy 2025! XO

  7. Your kitchen is absolutely beautiful! Your whole home is just stunning. And the spread… it’s simply lovely. I can tell your love language is all about taking care of your family. Your grandchildren are adorable, and it’s clear they mean the world to you.

My mom used to make a buche de noel every Christmas—it was my brother’s favorite dessert, so she’d make one for his birthday too! I haven’t had one in years, so it was such a joy to read about it in your post.

By the way, your lemon ricotta cake looked gorgeous, and I’m sure it tasted just as amazing, but there’s just something about food made by someone else that always tastes better. Why is that??

Your holiday season looks like it was full of joy and fun. I’m so glad you shared it with us here! 😘❤️

    1. The grands are the best! We just love them so much and want to spend as much time with them as possible. Thank you for your kind comments on our home. We've been here 12 years now and still just love this house. The kitchen is twice the size of our old one and we really use the space. When we moved in, the entire house was pink, including the kitchen. Pink Corian counters and flesh colored walls. In the first year, I changed out the cabinet hardware to somethng more modern and we put in the granite counters and the backsplash. All the appliances were white, so we've slowly changed to stainless as the appliances died. Our last one was the microwave just a few years ago.

Wow that you mom made the buche de noel for so many years! I've never attempted any type of 'roll' cake as I'm sure it would crack and break! I don't think I have the patience. I'm glad you enjoyed my post. Happy 2025! XO

  8. Wow, you really outdid yourself with that dinner! Very impressive. I'm intrigued by the strawberry pretzel salad. Is there a story behind that (and are there additional ingredients beyond strawberries and pretzels)?

The lemon ricotta cake looks fantastic, too. I love ricotta but Tara does not (so much so that she makes her lasagna with cottage cheese instead – sacre bleu!). So, I won't be asking you for that particular recipe.

    1. My family has been enjoying the strawberry pretzel salad for probably 20 years. Read my reply to Nicole above, but you can probably find the recipe easily online. I think I had it somewhere and then saw the recipe in one of those old fashioned employee cookbooks my husband brought home, back in the day. Um yeah, cottage cheese is not the same in lasagna!

We go to as many things with Maxwell and Levi as we can! Looks like you had great holiday parties for family! My husband and I both have birthdays in January so we usually do Christmas and birthdays together in one gift. This year is a trip. Happy New Year to you and your family. P.S. I hope she grows up and marries a ginger to keep that beautiful color for generations to come. Also. She is very adorable. - The pop-up wine bar?? What the heck? We need some of those around here! - We have the St. Luke's Festival of Trees here in Boise and I go every year. I love the whimsical trees and they are always my favorite. :) - How incredibly special is it that you have your BFF for 56 years. That is just wonderful and how nice of her to send you that beautiful ornament. That is really a special bond you two share. - I'm happy you had a great holiday season and I hope the New Year brings you nothing but joy!

    1. My husband grew up in a big Irish Italian family. I was shocked our first Christmas when I saw the bounty of food at his house. Honestly, our buffet is nothing compared to what he grew up with. Oddly, the rest of the year, they ate like paupers 🤣🤣🤣 So weird to me.

Both of my daughters are redheads. My oldest had two redhead daughters, but her son has brown hair. My mom had two ginger aunts and my husband had one redhead aunt and one ginger sister. It’s crazy how it has only ever passed down to females, but the gene must be strong as I have dark hair and my husband was blond.

Thanks for commenting and I hope you blog more in 2025! XO

    1. Congratulations, Craig! I just read your Christmas newsletter. Two of my grandparents are buried in Dunkirk. I never hear about that town, so unusual that you would go there to view the eclipse. Happy New Year!

      Delete
    2. Then you no doubt noticed that the letter said she was due, but made no mention of a new baby. . . What a difference a couple days can make. . .
Dunkirk was dead-center in the zone of totality, so the totality was the longest duration. Plus, it was (and still is) remote enough that we figured it wouldn't be a mob scene. And, it was close to minimum distance from OurTown. What we didn't plan on was that, after the eclipse was over, virtually everyone from Michigan who came to Ohio for the eclipse were going thru Toledo at the same time on the way home. Took us 6 hours for a 2.5-hour drive. . .

      Delete
    3. I had not heard about Dunkirk being the center of totality. We were warned ad nauseam about traffic when the eclipse was over and were a little concerned about getting home from my daughter's (you have to take three interstates to get to her house from ours). The roads were empty! LOL!

  20. Your holiday was quite full! I miss those days of choir concerts and piano recitals. I don't think I loved it back then, but it's one of those things that when it's done and over, you really do miss it when they are grown.
I wish we had pop up wine bars here in South Bend, but we can't have nice things here. I'd have to drive to Chicago for the nearest one. You're lucky you live in an area that has so much to see and do during the holidays.
The food all looks amazing! I did make your pretzel salad over the summer and I agree that it is delish! I should have made it for the holidays also, but there's always just so much dessert on the table, I decided we might offer it again at Easter.
Jason and I also gift each other consumables. He usually gets some diet pepsi from me along with roast beef hash (both of which I find absolutely disgusting and hate having in the house, but the holidays are for treating the loved ones so it's the only time you'll see that crap in my shopping cart LOL) and I also get dark chcolates (Lindor) and a bottle of wine.
    Happy New Year!

    1. The nice part of going to grandkids’ performances and sports is that you didn’t have to drive them to all the practices 🤣 That’s the exhausting part! We really are lucky to have so much to see and do here. I always say that if it wasn’t for the weather, it would be one of the best places to live. I just can’t take all this lake effect snow and gray skies that last for 4 months.

Easter would be a good time to make the pretzel salad. I have never heard of roast beef hash, but it does sound nasty 🤓 Have a great new year, Theresa! ❤️
