Wacky Wednesday: Flower Shaming, Blowing Snow, and the Ghost in My Attic

It's time again to see what's wack in my world:

My husband gave me this lovely bouquet of carnations for Valentine's Day. Aren't they beautiful? Then the next day, I see a TikTok post that said, "No female over the age of 16 wants carnations." I mean, really? A man gives you flowers, and you reject them because they aren't pricey? Flower shaming is a new low.

Speaking of men, this is mine. Yes, he's using a leaf blower on the snow! This was a discovery he made last year, and it works if you only have a few inches of the light, powdery stuff. I guess it beats shoveling?

I'm always looking to add variety to my diet, so when my grocer had dragon fruit on sale for $4, I decided to buy one. This was only my second time ever purchasing one, and I remembered that it didn't seem to have much flavor, maybe because it wasn't fully ripe. This time I waited until it was very soft to cut it open. Again, ZERO flavor. It's surprising to me, because it certainly looks tasty.

Granted, it can be difficult to figure out vanity plates, but how often is it hard to understand a decal? I had no clue on this one. It says: SAY YA TO DA' UP, EH? The Michigan plates made me think the UP refers to the Upper Peninsula, but I still don't get it. The Canadian EH? along with it adds to the confusion. Maybe my Michigan friends have insight?

Three years ago, we had a complete remodel of our master bathroom. Three recessed lights were replaced with LED lights, which are supposed to last 25,000 - 50,000 hours of usage (or an average of 5 -10 years). This has never been our experience with LED light bulbs, but whatever. This bathroom light, which my husband never uses, and I only use when showering (so it's on 15 minutes/day max), stopped working after two years. And its location is in the cathedral ceiling of the bathroom, so not reachable by a normal ladder. We put off doing anything about it until last month when I finally contacted our remodeler to ask for the specifications of the light so I could order a new one that matched. They said it was under warranty, and they'd send an electrician out. Come to find out that the bulb was not burned out, it was that the orange plug was no longer in the orange socket. This befuddled the electrician, who was the one who installed it in the first place. He could not understand how this could have come unplugged, as it clicks in place. Plus, the fact that it did work for over a year. We have a ghost or a clever rodent in our ceiling.

Do you shame any particular variety of flowers? Dual purpose power equipment? Enjoy exotic fruits? Have a ghost do weird sh*t in your house?

Happy Hump Day! It's March!!!!!!!!!

Comments

  1. Yes, those flowers are GORGEOUS! As you know, other than green, my favorite color is PINK! Don't you love the smell of fresh flowers? And how dare they flower shame! Besides, carnations last the longest of all gifted flowers.

Funny you mentioned your husband using a leaf blower on the snow because here in the city, store owners do the same thing. They primarily use them to blow away all the crap people throw on the pavement. But they also use them to melt the snow in the winter.

Never tried dragon fruit but I've seen it in the produce section at Trader Joe's. You're right, it does look as though it would have a great taste.

" Plus, the fact that it did work for over a year. We have a ghost or a clever rodent in our ceiling."

    Ooooooo.....what a mystery! I think you're right....it's a GHOST!

My two favorite fruits considered "exotic" , are avocado and kiwi. No ghosts in my apartment. No shaming of any variety of flower, I love them all. And no dual purpose power equipment.

Fun post to read with my early morning coffee! Happy Hump Day! I know, can you believe it's MARCH already?!?

    1. Aren’t the carnations so pretty? And here it is three weeks later and they are still looking beautiful. I’m chuckling imagining retailers blowing trash away from their store! 🤣 I mean, who wants to touch it!? Especially those damn flossers🤣🤣🤣

I wish I could recommend the dragon fruit, but it just has zero flavor. So disappointing. I did see online that the yellow/orange ones are better than the pink one I bought. If I see any on sale , I’ll try one of those. I love kiwi too, especially since discovering the sun gold ones! My son told me about them last summer. Have you had them? They are golden yellow inside rather than green and they are softer, too. Avocados are great, too. Isn’t it crazy that they were not around when we were kids? But neither were kiwi or a lot of the fruits and veggies we enjoy now. Have a great rest of your week, Ron!

    2. No, I have not tried them but will look for them at the produce store. Thanks! Aren't avocados the BEST? I ate TWO yesterday! And you're right, when we were kids the closest we got to eating fruit were Fruit Loops, with 40% sugar! LOL

    3. It’s so nice to have choices today. I just remember only having apples, oranges (which I’m not a fan of) and bananas.

  2. Years ago, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce ran an ad campaign with the slogan 'Say Yes! to Michigan", complete with bumper stickers, etc. Some Yooper (UP-er, get it?) wags put out a spoof bumper sticker, incorporating idiosyncrasies of the UP accent, which is very similar to the Canadian accent (hence the 'eh'); there is also a proclivity to say 'Yah' (or 'yah-sure') in agreement or affirmation, and to turn 'th' into 'd' (hence 'da' for 'the') that probably goes to the 19th-century influx of Finnish miners. It makes perfect sense if you're from here. . . ;)

    1. That is a perfect explanation! Thanks so much, Craig. And I can see why someone would spoof that slogan. Our state and cities have had some dumb ones over the years.

  3. BTW, this year, we had lots of really light snowfalls, for which it was easier to just take a broom and sweep the sidewalk than to shovel. My neighbors who have leaf-blowers did the same as your husband. Only works if the snow is actually, you know, blowable. . .

    1. Using a broom on the sidewalk doesn’t sound too bad in the winter. Man, I hate winter!

  4. Those flowers are beautiful. I don't know why people have to be such assholes, I really don't.
We have a combo snow/ leaf blower, which my husband uses when the snow is fluffy. Since he retired I have not once picked up a shovel! He has a quad with a blade on it too now, so he's actually pretty happy when it snows.
I can't read that decal at all so I have no idea, but I see someone has already answered that question.

    1. People are just rude and entitled these days. Carnations! They’re gorgeous! I have never heard of a combo snow/leaf blower! Don’t tell my husband 🤣 He loves his power tools. Mine is not retired, but when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a few years ago, he told me not to shovel anymore. Between the risk of falling, and the twisting motion on the spine, it’s a bad idea. I’m not mad about that 🤓

  5. I've never tried dragon fruit, love the name though. I buy star fruit once in a while, but the effort it takes to peel and slice it is really too much for what you get. I've read the same thing as you about carnations. I don't get it either, the flowers are pretty. Isn't that enough?

    1. I totally agree on the star fruit! It’s funny that you came across the same flower shaming as I did!

  6. We're delighted with our LED lights. They just last and last. We've only had one that unexpectedly blew after a couple of years. If yours keep blowing, maybe your electrical system is overloaded?
"No female over the age of 16 wants carnations" is obviously an idiotic statement because females aren't all the same and they have different tastes. We've given up marking Valentine's Day but we still find excuses to buy Lindt truffles!
I've never tried dragon fruit/pitaya. I've never seen it in the shops. Sounds like it's not worth trying!

    1. We have had upgraded electrical panels in both of our homes, but no luck with the LED lightbulbs. And they are so pricey. It always pisses me off when they go out after a year or less. I’m a big fan of Valentine’s Day because it’s the one holiday I don’t have to make a big meal for family 🤣

    2. Your flowers are beautiful!! Some people have no idea what they're talking about.
My husband does the same thing with light dustings of snow. I even watched him blowing the snow off of his car with it. Pretty smart, I say.
I've not tried dragon fruit and it doesn't sound like I need to.
As for the UP sticker I googled it because I was curious and found this.
"Show your Yooper pride with this fun play on the state tourism campaign of the 1970s and 1980s, Say Yes to Michigan! Say Yah to da U.P., eh! can be credited to Marquette resident Jack Bowers in 1983." My brother spends 3-4 weeks in the UP every winter so I wondered what this was about. He just bought a second house up there this year. It really is a beautiful area. If you like snow.

    3. Thank you, Lori. Getting rid of snow the easy way is always plus. Thanks for your deep dive into that decal. Craig, one of my Michigan readers, also commented on it. You have to laugh at state tourism campaigns sometimes. For a long time, ours has been Ohio, the Heart of it All.

  7. Those carnations are so pretty. I don't know that I've ever seen carnations that beautiful. I'm not overly picky when it comes to flowers. Flower shaming is silliness.

I've not tried dragon fruit. It does sound exotic, but interesting to know you've not found it really tasty. I'm not that adventurous so I'd probably not have tried it.

We have an entire section of lights - above our cabinets in the kitchen in a row of glass display cabinets - I think it's a similar thing, LED. They haven't worked in over a year - only worked sporadically. Maybe we have a ghost? Waiting (been waiting for over a year) for my bestie's husband who's an electrician to come out and address that and a bunch of other things. That said, HOW DID THAT THING COME UNPLUGGED? That's crazy.

I don't know of any dual purpose equipment except for my vacuum. If I run it while babysitting - the tots love a game of chase with the vacuum. ;)

  8. What a hilarious and relatable post! Flower shaming is a new one for me, but I agree—carnations are beautiful, no matter what TikTok says! As for the leaf blower on snow, that’s genius! I might have to recommend it to my husband. I had the same experience with dragon fruit, it looks so promising but tastes like nothing—such a letdown. And that vanity plate? I'm stumped too! As for your ghostly ceiling resident, I’m convinced it’s a mischievous little critter. I can’t even imagine trying to figure out how that plug came undone. Thanks for the laughs, I’ll be thinking about that light mystery for days now!

  9. We gave my mom carnations for Valentine's this year. 🤣 (She loved them!)
The leaf blower idea is brilliant.
Dragon fruit is so beautiful yet so dull... that sometimes, it’s kind of like people too.
I got the Michigan sticker right away, but in my defense, I don’t live far from Wisconsin, and we speak the same language. Yah, hey der! (Translation: Yes, hello there.)
I vote ghost. I always vote ghost.

Since my dad passed, we’ve had a lot of cool ghostly things happen—flickering lights, orbs, you name it. It’s pretty cool. 💜

  10. Flower-shaming is a new term for me as well, Bijoux, and like yourself I have always liked carnations and yours looked wonderful and certainly have lasted, which roses never did for me and they were much most costly too! My husband is convinced that we have a ghost in our apt, which is in an old mill, but I have never felt the same. Snow blowing vs. shoveling sounds OK to me and so glad we are past that now, the shoveling that is. As for the car decal, I have enough problem trying to figure out some of the vanity plates!

  11. I'll take paper flowers and be happy. I told Jason he could pick weeds on the side of the road and I'd probably appreciate them more than store bought roses since he took the time to stop and pick them for me.

I also think dragonfruit has no flavor. I was quite disappointed the first time I bought it because I thought it was going to be really sweet and delicious. It was like a mouth full of water. I'll never buy it again.

My neighbor loves to leaf blow his snowy yard. He'll do ours too when Jason's out of town, which is nice. I tried leaf blow mine once and it didn't work for me. I think my leaf blower just wasn't powerful enough, even on the light powdery snow.

    1. You do have a point about taking the time to pick flowers/weeds. My husband once came indoors with a heart shaped leaf for me, which was sweet. I’m always surprised that my grocer bothers to carry these expensive exotic fruits. They aren’t worth the price and who is buying them (besides my dumb ass the one time)? 🤣

Yeah, I think you need a strong gas powered blower to do the snow.

  12. I'm so happy to see someone clarified the bumper sticker. My first thought was that it belonged to a Boston/New England person using their fun accent. ;)

I saw recently too that Baby's Breath was being flower shamed. I love the carnations (they last so long) and who in the world could shame flowers? All flowers (like babies and puppies) are beautiful! The nerve of people.

I have zero experience shoveling or blowing snow, but I've used my blower to move dust bunnies from inside my house to outside my house. :) I've also used my Dyson vacuum to clean my pool lanai. :)

Ok, I just saw something on The Gram about Dragon fruit being a good thing to eat if you're clogged up; like it's a natural laxative! I think I've only had little bites here and there in a salad at a lovely Asian place we go to, but I didn't seem to notice any issues with my digestive parts. ;0 I don't remember it having any flavor either.

My oldest uses her to vacuum up spiders. How gross is that?? Yes, I saw that bit about dragon fruit. I think one would have to eat the entire piece of fruit to make that work.

True story: My ex loved carnations, so I always used to give them to her. Then one Valentine's Day she insisted on roses. OK, fine. But when I got her the roses, she complained that the bouquet wasn't large enough and that I should've had them delivered to her work.

That was our last V-Day together, which should not come as a shock.

  18. The flowers are beautiful and shaming flowers is ridiculous. Oh wow that is a lot of snow and a leaf blower is a good idea. A clever rodent LOL. When I use to live with my mom and I was upstairs everyone in a while during the day if there was a sudden loud noise we would hear a low growling coming from the floor boards. My cats would be like WTF? LOL I think we had raccoons living in our attic.

  19. I love carnations! Apparently, the younger generations are incredibly hard to please! As a born and raised Michigander I can tell you they do talk like that in the UP. As a matter of fact, we in the lower peninsula are known to occasionally say EH too! I've wanted to try dragon fruit but you are not the first one who've said there is no taste. If that's the case why bother, eh?

  20. The flowers are beautiful. I love the mix of colors. And The Red Carnation is the state of Ohio's flower, so I think the person flower shaming is full of themselves. My husband using the leaf blower for other things as well. He uses it to blow rain off the deck if we want to sit out after a rain, and to clean out gutters, and yes snow as well. The fruit is colorful, but it doesn't look appetizing to me. The name also isn't appealing, so not on my list of things to try.
