Photo Friday: My Birthday Weekend In the Middle Of Nowhere

I had the most wonderful birthday weekend, despite saying, “We’re in the middle of nowhere!” the entire time. This post is photo heavy. Please share in my celebration:

First stop was the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio. It opened on July 20, 1972, exactly three years after Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The design was to resemble a futuristic moon base. I remember visiting with my parents not long after it opened, so it was fun to go back. If you've never heard of Wapakoneta, it's because it's in the middle of nowhere.

Neil Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta in 1930. He fell in love with planes as a young boy and received his pilot license even before his driver's license at age 16. After graduating from Purdue and serving in the military, he joined NASA in 1962. Armstrong was the first man to step foot on the moon, announcing "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

One of his missions was on the failed Gemini VIII. This is the actual module. A docent spent a LOT of time giving us the details of the docking with the Agena, the damaged thrusters, the undocking, the rotation (once per second), and the landing in the Pacific Ocean. You're welcome for me not going into more details than this! I was horrified just thinking about it, while having everything pointed out with a flashlight into the module.

One of the most interesting things in a space museum is seeing the dehydrated food. If you look on the left side, that stick in the middle is a Pillsbury Space Stick. Who else ate those as a kid in the '70's??

A re-creation of Armstrong's space suit (the real one is at the Smithsonian).

This was fascinating to me: a cheat sheet on his arm so he wouldn't forget what to do on the moon!

The Apollo 11 Moon Rock

Hallway to the Astro Theatre to watch the 30-minute film, featuring footage of the moon landing, etc. In total, we spent two hours at the museum.

Then we drove through the center of town to see an Armstrong statue and the Helmet sculpture.

Next on the agenda was lunch at Austeria in Sidney, Ohio. I found this hidden gem online and the excellent reviews were spot on. It's a wine boutique with plenty of food options.

There's nothing I enjoy more than a wine flight and charcuterie board. I highly recommend the Domaine Rolet Cremant Du Jura, if anyone cares!

Afterwards, we walked around the town square. We always appreciate the architecture of an old courthouse in a small town.

Then we were on to our final destination of the day, Hotel Versailles in Versailles, Ohio. Also known as the middle of nowhere! For those familiar with the state, it is about one hour north of Dayton. My husband had read an article about the boutique hotel on cleveland.com and thought it would be a unique place to stay if we were ever in the area. We were! The landmark has a 150-year history and was recently renovated into its current transformation of 30 rooms.

After checking in, we strolled around town.

All of the statues were charming!

Statue of Monet across the street from the hotel.

Afterwards, we showered, got dressed up, and headed down to their chef-driven, sustainably sourced restaurant, which comprises the ground floor of the hotel. This was the view from our booth at Silas Creative Kitchen.

As the name suggests, the dishes are artistically created. To start, we shared the Thai Crab Salad: heron point crab, avocado, green apple, cucumber, pickled carrot, mint, basil, cilantro, crispy shallot, toasted coconut, Thai vinaigrette, with chili oil on the side. AMAZING!

For my entree, I had the Snake River Farm Wagyu Short Ribs: Israeli hummus, local arugula, Bulgarian feta, house pickles, grilled focaccia. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the accoutrements were just as good.

For dessert, we split the Coffee Creme Brule, topped with homemade chocolate ice cream and orange meringue. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous birthday dinner! The next morning, we headed back down for the breakfast buffet. Then it was time to check out and hit the road.

We took the long way home, passing through bucolic towns where the only sights to see were farms and churches. It was the perfect backdrop for listening to Sirius XM's Yacht Rock Channel.

What we did not expect to see was a massive lake in the middle of nowhere! This is Grand Lake Saint Mary's in Celina, Ohio. A great spot to stretch our legs.

Our trip wasn't over yet. When planning, I noticed that on the way home, we'd be near the grave sites of some of my ancestors. Thanks to findagrave.com, I was able to see photos of my maternal great grandparents' grave. Finding the actual cemetery was challenging, as there wasn't an exact address. I only knew it was on Twp. Rd. 115.  We found it! And it was so small, there was no trouble finding the actual grave. That particular great grandfather's ancestors came over from England in the 1650's.

Our last stop was easier to find, as I'd been there twice before; my maternal grandparents' grave. They died in 1977 and 1987, so those were the only times I'd been there. Through my genealogy research, I discovered that my grandmother's grandparents were also buried in the same cemetery, so they would be my great great grandparents. No one ever bothered to mention that to me, so I don't know if my mother never knew or what? Thankfully, at the entrance there was a huge notebook listing last names and section numbers of the graves, so we found all the gravestones quite easily. My husband kindly took lots of photos of me with my ancestors' stones for me to add to my genealogy books.

Five Star Birthday Weekend!

What part would have been your favorite? What do you like to do for your birthday?

Comments

  1. First off, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, my friend! X

Even though I was only 7-years old, I clearly remember watching the news when Armstrong first step foot on the moon. It was SUCH big news back then. How cool that you were at the museum!

"If you look on the left side, that stick in the middle is a Pillsbury Space Stick. Who else ate those as a kid in the '70's??"

    ME!!!!!!!

When I first looked at that photo of the space food, I thought they were IV bags of Turmeric. LOL!

Love the shot of the "cheat sheet." I actually enlarged the photo and read everything the list.

"There's nothing I enjoy more than a wine flight and charcuterie board."

I feel the same! I could make a whole meal out of that. Heavenly!

Versailles, Ohio looks like such a cool place! And I have to say that the "presentation" of everything you ordered in that restaurant makes it look all the more delicious. My favorite flavor ice cream is chocolate, so I would have really enjoyed that!

And as you already know, I have such a passion for visiting cemeteries, so I really enjoyed the photos you shared. And THAT would have been my favorite part! I can spend hours walking through a cemetery, reading the tombstones.

When it's my birthday, I like to spend the day doing something I've not done before. Such as, taking the train outside the city and visiting a town I've not been to in the past.

Thanks so much for sharing your birthday! Thoroughly enjoyed! And have a superb weekend!

    X

    1. Thanks, Ron! The film at the museum was really good. It showed Nixon calling the astronauts while they were on the moon. I didn’t remember that happening! I’m happy to know you ate space sticks, too. My mom put them in my lunch. I remember there were different flavors.

Yes, the chef at that restaurant focuses on presentation, but the food was also delicious. It was such an enjoyable birthday dinner. And the prices were not outrageous compared to eating in downtown Cleveland.

The cemeteries were so peaceful, even though a train goes right next to the one my grandparents are buried. Ironically, their home was also right next to train tracks, so it actually seemed like a perfect spot for them.

I love doing things I’ve never done before, just like you! It’s a special way to spend your birthday. Have a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend! XO

  2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! What a wonderful weekend for you, Bijoux. I'm so happy you had such a great trip, and how amazing is it to find your ancestors. Incredibly amazing, especially from so long ago!
A wine flight, now that's my kind of celebration! We don't have Sirius anymore, but the Yacht Rock channel was my number one favourite.
This was so fun to read, I'm so glad you had such a great time!

    1. It was such a good time! It combined my love for history, wine, getting dressed up, and genealogy! It was perfect! And it was fun to listen to Yacht Rock with my hubby, who I didn’t know when those songs originally played.

  3. Happy Birthday! All that food looks simply wonderful.
I was incredibly intrigued by the "cheat sheet" on his suit. I'd never heard or seen anything about that.
I've never visited the cemetery for any of my grandparents (aside from the day of one of my grandmother's actual committal). But my parents - who are both very much alive - have already purchased their plot, their headstone, AND had everything engraved but their date of death which perfectly sums up my father's personality. I hate to think their inevitable decline and death, but I will admit I very much appreciate that I won't have to sort out many logistics and will just be able to grieve.

    1. I know! I was so surprised by the cheat sheet! So funny. My parents were not one to visit cemeteries, so we only ever went for the actual burial of my grandparents and that was it (although in my mom's case, it would have been a 3 hour drive to visit). My parents had chosen the national (military) cemetery to be buried in, but that was it. When my father passed, we still had to do the rest. At least for my mom, I've been through it already, so it should be easier.

  4. Well, Happy Birthday! I've always wanted to go to Wapakoneta; it's only about a 2.5 hour drive from here. I thought about going there for the eclipse last year, since it was close to dead-center on the path of totality. But I figured about a half-million other folks would have the same idea. . .

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, then you should go check out the museum, although it really only takes 2 hours to see everything. Didn't you see the eclipse in Dunkirk? I was thinking of you because that's where the second cemetery we visited was located.

      Delete
    2. We did indeed go to Dunkirk. You have a good memory!
I've done a fair bit of cemetery-tromping, tracking down ancestors. It's always a bit of a thrill to find someone you're connected to. . .

      Delete
    3. I only remembered it because of the connection with my grandparents. It really is exciting to find a long lost relative, even if they're no longer with us.

  5. Happy belated birthday. I don't know for sure, but I'd probably like to be In The Middle Of Nowhere, as long as the company was good.
This looks like a lovely little getaway; the museum looks very interesting and the little town so very quaint. So, no one there was declaring that the Moon walk was fake news? 😂
    Your dinner LOOKS AMAZEBALLS.
I too would enjoy a walk around the graveyard finding my ancestors. I wonder if your grandparents knew their ancestors were there, but no-one really spoke about or thought anyone would really care? I think that's how it was with my grandparents.

    1. The Middle of Nowhere is better than it's cracked up to be! LOL! I was totally thinking about how people think the moon walk was fake news the entire time we were there! Especially during the film because it did seem a little hokey? And I guess I could find a rock that looked like that one in my own yard - LOL!

My grandmother was 17 when her grandmother passed, so she had to have known it was the same cemetery. Although since my grandma died before grandpa, she might not have known what cemetery she'd be laid to rest? I just think it's strange that my mother never said anything or said, "Oh, let's go look for my mother's grandparents" when we were there for both of her parents' burials.

  6. Happy belated birthday, friend!!
This whole trip is so in line with the kind of stuff I love, too. I’m so glad you had an amazing birthday weekend!

Okay—first of all, I’ve been to Wapakoneta! We visited that museum when I was a kid. I don’t remember every detail, but I do remember going there with my family. It’s so cool to see it again through your perspective!

That wine boutique looks amazing—almost like it belongs somewhere in Europe!

Also, small-world moment: Celina is where one of my friends (who I met here in Illinois) is from! She lives in Colorado now, but we met through blogging. When we realized we were both originally from Ohio, we became fast friends.

And you weren’t far from where my grandmother grew up—Spencerville! Where was the cemetery? It’d be really cool to see if our families were close by. ❤️

    1. That's cool that you visited it as a child, too. I really don't remember much about it. I'm assuming we went when I was 9 or 10. You met someone from Celina through blogging? That's wild! I had no idea such a huge lake was there, in the middle of nowhere! I looked up Spencerville. My grandmother grew up between Dola and Kenton. Her parents were buried at the first cemetery (Kenton) and she and her grandparents are buried in Dunkirk. Do any of those towns sound familiar? On the map, it's only about 40 miles east of Spencerville, so in the grand scheme of things, very close! I thought of you as we drove through Mansfield! XO

  7. Happy belated Birthday to you!! It sounds like you had fun celebrating. All of the statues in that area are really neat. And the food and wine bar...awesome.
I love taking quick trips for my birthday as well. One of my favorites was going to Louisville. We went to the Mohammad Ali museum which was actually very cool. Not only did it showcase his boxing career but his poetry, his art and SO many artifacts from that period in time. It was a lot of fun plus Louisville is neat area with amazing food.
Enjoy the holiday weekend my friend!!

    1. Thanks you! The statues were a surprise. There are no statues in the town we live - LOL! I guess we're not as fancy. We went to Louisville on vacation a few years ago and LOVED it! So much to see and do. We didn't go to the Ali museum because it wasn't something Middle Child or I were interested in, though my husband would have enjoyed it. We did have so much good food while there. We even did a foodie tour. Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

  8. The Air and Space Museum looks interesting. I like the cheat sheet on what to do on the moon! But the dehydrated food looks pretty unappetising. Some great statues in Versailles. I love the one of Monet. And that was a stroke of luck finding the family graves.

  9. I'll go one step further and call that a SIX-star birthday! Well played! I thought Wisconsin had a lock on funny-sounding towns that start with a W (Wauwatosa, Weyauwega, Waukesha), but Wapakoneta gives us a run for our money!

I love Air & Space museums, so that would've been my favorite stop, though both the wine flight and Silas Creative Kitchen also sound fantastic. Actually, your whole day does. Can I tag along next year? Please, pretty please??

    1. I guess a lot of Native American names for places started with a ‘W’? Wapakoneta means place of white bones. I love to look up that kind of stuff!

I thought you’d like the space museum, Mark. I can’t remember, but did you say you’ve been to the Air Force Museum in Dayton when I wrote about it years ago? It’s tremendous! I can’t make any promises on future birthday trips . . .

    2. Yes, I have been to the Air Force Museum in Dayton. More than once! Loved it. :)

  13. Belated Happy 🥂 Birthday wishes, Bijoux, and this adventure is something we would have done as well since finding unusual and/or new to us places are the sort of getaways we prefer. The smaller the town, the more unexpected things you often find and what a great hotel. I was wondering if it has been completely modernized from an older one or if it was completely new. Exploring a cemetery and finding your ancestors headstones was amazing.

    1. Isn’t it fun to discover new places only 3-4 hours away? Yes, the hotel has had a number of reincarnations over its 150 year history. I believe there was a fire 6 years ago, so the hotel is new now. The headstones were such a treasure to find.

  15. I love wkend jaunts like that. We didn't manage to take any last summer; but plan to this year. I love hitting the small town and walking around the town squares. They're always interesting Been years since we've been to Sidney, may put that on the list. A few wkends ago hubby and I stayed downtown at The Old Southern Hotel that's quite historic. More fun than staying at modern hotels all the time. More character. Glad you were able to visit the cemeteries. I used to do that all the time, and have photographed and posted quite a bit on line on Find A Grave, but the friend I used to go with moved away and now days it doesn't feel safe to visit some of these out of the way cemeteries on my own. The good looks amazing.

  16. Happy Birthday, Bijoux, and many more!

Looks like you had a blast (no pun intended) out there in the middle of nowhere. The Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum looks like a great place to visit.

And the lunar cheat sheet was a hoot! What exactly could you forget on a moon landing?

Visiting your ancestors' grave sites sounds like an unforgettable experience. And what a surprise when you found the resting place for your great great grandparents. Throw in the beautiful scenery and the delicious food and it sounds like you had a first-class birthday weekend.

Wishing you all the best, dear friend!

    1. Thank you, Rob. Maybe in the excitement of walking on the moon the to do list could go out the window? It’s all so crazy to imagine, even 50 years later. I was so happy to find my ancestors’ stones. It was a nice break on the drive home.

  17. Happy birthday! It looks like a great time. I think my favorite part would've been exploring the cute town and that sweet hotel with the amazing food. It looks so yummy. I don't know if I would've known what half of the ingredients were, but I trust that they were really good. I don't think visiting a museum would've been top of my list of things to do on my b-day. Maybe I was dragged to too many as a kid? The notes on his sleeve - that's a really cool tidbit. Honestly searching for the gravesites would also be interesting. I've visited Ryan side graves in Ireland. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Everything was sooo good. It was a nice splurge from my usual cottage cheese routine 🤣 I like most museums because I like art and history. However, the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio is not for me! As a kid, my family went to caves and factory tours, so I get it! Visiting graves in Ireland must have been really interesting.
