Weird and Wonderful Wednesday: Think Pink, Hoarding, and the Karen Song
Time for the Spring Edition:
This one is for Mark! Parma, Ohio has long been associated with pink flamingos (it dates back to the 1960's) with the plastic lawn ornaments decorating many residential yards. As is most things where people make fun of something, Parma has leaned into it and now has a few of these giant flamingos around the city. This was my first sighting.
During the four months I spent cleaning out my mother's condo, I came across six savings bonds. Please note the date! I believe my mother received this one for her high school graduation. After numerous bank discussions, I was able to take my mother to a bank near her assisted living residence to redeem the bonds. If you're wondering, this $25 bond was worth $184. It's a relief to have another task crossed off the list, regarding all her stuff.
Speaking of hoarders, my neighbor (who lives with one adult daughter, so that's two people total) periodically has a tree lawn full of trash on garbage day. It boggles the mind where all this stuff is coming from. The first time it happened, I thought she was moving. Twelve years later, it just continues.
I just love this so much!
I have another weird neighbor behind me. It's hard to tell, but that bright pink light can be observed from their family room every morning. All I can think of is 'whorehouse!'
Am I the only one who continuously finds Christmas tree needles months after the trees have been taken down? And how do they just magically appear on the floor, nowhere near where the trees were even set up?
Many years ago, my oldest daughter volunteered at a hospital and two of the other volunteers were twins. These girls were named Lemonjello and Orangejello. You can't make this crap up. However, they were not pronounced 'Lemon Jello' or 'Orange Jello.' It was more of a French pronunciation. Anywho, I was doing some vacation research and came across this coffee shop and I couldn't wait to send the picture to my daughter.
This ranks up there as one of my favorite memes of all time.
One of my friends is in Switzerland and sent me this picture from a brewery. I was disappointed to learn that neither she nor her spouse ordered the gose, because who wouldn't want to say its name?
My husband told me he wanted to take the scenic route home from Toledo a few weeks ago, rather than the turnpike. So scenic!
One of the Youtube workout instructors that I follow uses upbeat music with no verbal instruction. Imagine my surprise when this song came on. I had to look up the video. Weird and wonderful, indeed!
I'm in awe about the savings bond and the date!!! OMG, that was issued only two years after I was born.
"this $25 bond was worth $184." - WOW!
And I swear to God, when I first saw the photo of your neighbors yard, I thought it was a photo of them having a garage sale! TWO vacuum cleaners?!?!
" All I can think of is 'whorehouse!'"
LOL!!!! I wonder if the light is some sort of pink light therapy?
Love the meme!!! Sounds like several people who I work with!
The pic of the brewery is hilarious! As well as the music video clip! Oh, and thanks for sharing that YouTube link (Spinnin' Records) because I discovered some really great music to exercise with!
Happy Wednesday, my friend! Enjoy the rest of your week!
$184 on a $25 investment sounds good until you realize it’s been 68 years 😵💫 My mother kept everything! And apparently, so does my neighbor. I never understand why she’s always getting rid of so much stuff or how it all fits in her house! I’m glad you liked Spinnin’ Records. I wonder if a lot of exercise instructors use it? Happy Hump Day!
One of my elderly neighbours has a bright pink light like that in her greenhouse. Maybe it has something to do with plants. I only know this because this neighbour has a clear fronted greenhouse that points toward the street and it is a NEON pink light. She's got a huge green thumb so I've never asked, but I'm assuming it does something beneficial.
Oh, I’ve never heard of pink lights for plants. That is so interesting. I would not think that of these folks, as their landscaping is rather nonexistent, but who knows? I will be by to explore your blog later today!
That savings bond is wild! I didn't realize you were still going through your mom's stuff. You're a good daughter! I wonder if people still do that flamingo decoration for birthdays. I haven't seen it for a long time! Of all the names I've heard in my life, I have never come across a Lemonjello or Orangejello. Imagine going through life like that!
Most of what I haven’t gone through are pictures and memorabilia. Things like the savings bonds have been sitting on my desk, due to not being sure how to handle. I spoke to three different banks until I found one that could help me and they made it so easy. The hard part was getting her there in the wheelchair and having her try to sign everything with her maiden name!
I love that interesting fact about Parma! The only thing I knew about Parma, Ohio was the Moon Over Parma song from The Drew Carey Show. I think he’s from there?
And I love stories like the one about the guy from Spin Doctors. My dad had a similar story—he was one of 12 kids and grew up very poor. His high school guidance counselor told him he’d amount to nothing. Long story short, he amounted to a lot more than nothing. Older people who say things like that to younger people are just awful humans.
Yes, Carey is from Old Brooklyn which neighbors Parma. It’s a very Eastern European population. Think pierogies! Isn’t it just awful when adults say crap like that to kids? And the sad thing is, you always remember the negative comments. I’m glad your Dad proved that counselor wrong. Why the hell would you become a guidance counselor if that’s your attitude? Unreal!
I was playing a game with friends where you can only give clues using words that start with the same letter. I said "Birthday bird" for flamingo and was aghast that no one had a clue. I had no idea that was only a NE OH thing. I consulted my parents and learned it's from Parma, so of course no one out here knew it.
Does the trash truck pick up the extra stuff, the chairs, etc, and throw them out? If so, what a waste! They should go to Goodwill at least. That saddens me.
The song! OMG that's amazing!!! I remember that song. The backstory is terrific.
Yikes on the pink light. Yeah. That's what I'd think too. Eek.
So true on the Christmas tree needles!
'Lemon Jello' or 'Orange Jello'---that's just mean. But awesome about the coffee shop!
Awesome cat meme. :P
Absolutely on that gose! I have frequently bought drinks based on the name alone.
Ugh, that scenic route! :/
Okay, I could only do so much with that video. What the what?! Haha.
Other places don’t put pink flamingos in the yard for birthdays? What could be more iconic than that! Yes, the garbage truck picks up everything here except appliances. It’s sad that all that stuff goes to the dump, but there are definitely scavengers who drive by early in the morning in pickup trucks to take stuff. I love a good drink name and it often calls to me, too. The video is awful, but I do love the beat!
Well, good for the scavengers, I guess. Oh, and did you know this was Betsy? :) Just checking. I think I saw someone else on here at some point, also marked as anonymous.
Hey, Bijoux, you sure got some funky neighbors. I should hire the trash people to clean my apartment. And I wonder if the pink light crew are aliens...or radioactive.
Pine needles never know when to quit. You can almost admire the resilience if they weren't so annoying. The kitty meme is so cool and so reflective of my work ethic--or the lack thereof.
Maybe Lemonjello and Orangejello became a musicians and that's what you YouTube instructor is playing. Stranger things have happen...
It’s possible they are aliens. These are the same folks with a urinal in their backyard.🙄 That cat knows what’s up! If the lot is full, there’s enough people!
Apparently I've been drinking gose-style beers for years without ever realizing it, because those words are always coming out of my mouth!
I can't believe I took not one, but TWO, road trips to Ohio in a 10-year period and never once hit Parma. Guess I'll have to talk Tara into a third. We have talked about the Shawshank Redemption tour at the OH State Penitentiary in Mansfield, so there's always that, too.
Whenever we have live trees, I find pine needles a year later. I swear, they reproduce during the summer!
I just wanted to know if my friend said the name to order it! Sadly, she ordered something else. Parma is interesting. It’s very blue collar, union strong, and Trump proud. Don’t stand in their way of the pierogies and paczkis. They will run you down!
My son did the Shawshank tour and said it was really good. It’s not my thing, but Kingwood Center in Mansfield is really nice. Fun fact: both Kari and I used to live there!
It was terrible, tbh. I only lived there 8 months for a job transfer. Loved the job, hated the area! I kept asking for a transfer back to the Akron area and got the run around, so I found another job and moved back to Akron.
I like the pink flamingo. A few pink flamingos around Belfast would be fun. Indeed, where does all that discarded junk come from? Re the strange pink light, there's a house near us with a front room that's fully lit all night, and we wonder what's going on there. A dope factory?
Okay, that savings bond should be worth way more than $184! I've seen those old commercial reels that make savings bonds sound like they'd be worth thousands. What a rip off.
I love flamingos and have a small collection of them.
Your neighbor... I have to tell you. Those chairs - all of them - would've been in my garage as soon as I saw them hit the street! Those 2 bar stools I would've done something really funky/retro/70s with and the ideas for the wooden ones are endless. And then what would I do with them? Sell them because they will bring some money in. People dig that stuff. - I know you're thinking, omg, I'm so glad Mimi's not my neighbor. Lol.
I looked up the pink light. Could be for breast cancer awareness. - Pine needles are like that stupid plastic Easter grass we used to fill baskets with. I don't use that anymore. I don't even know if they make it anymore.
I have so many thoughts about the lemon orange jello twins. Look up Kevin Hart baby names. It's hilarious and true.
I would love to go to that Swiss brewery. Lol. And I would order the gose. When I saw your "scenic" route I thought for sure that was going to be a Pope joke. That music is wild and definitely workout music so it probably won't be on any of my playlists. I've got no time for that. I'm too busy gathering furniture from the hoods. Lol
You leave such funny comments! I’m always sad when you disappear for months on end! Yeah, you’d think after 68 years, you’d get a better return, but that’s the government for you. I LOVE when people refurbish old furniture. It’s often better quality than what you can get today. My daughters still use my childhood bedroom set. It was white with those gold specks, if you remember the style. I updated the drawer pulls and painted the gold trim with metallic silver and it all looks great. I didn’t check the next morning, but the scavengers with pickup trucks probably took most of the neighbor’s stuff. Someone took our broken lawnmower last week.
That pink light is year round. It’s odd that it seems to glow. Someone else mentioned aliens, which sounds about right for that dude. And yeah, I can’t even with Easter grass. I haven’t seen it sold lately. I’ll look up Kevin Hart’s baby name thing. Have you seen the Key and Peele substitute teacher skit about names? Hilarious!
Omg, a pope joke would have been hilarious! Do you follow Heartthrobanderson on Instagram or TikTok? His pope series has been the bomb!
Lol. Well, thank you and I'm trying not to disappear so much. I know EXACTLY what bedroom set you're talking about! My sister had it! I have no idea where it ended up, probably on a curb somewhere. Lol.
People take broken lawnmowers for the parts. It's a guy thing. Apparently refurbished lawnmowers go for some cash too.
Okay. I didn't know it was some weirdo guy with the pink light. Have you met him? I think you should be neighborly and go meet him to get the scoop. That would be a great blog post! Lol..
Yes. I have seen that substitute teacher skit and no matter how many times I watch it, it's sooo stinkin funny! A-Ron! - And I do follow Heartthrobanderson, but I haven't seen any of the Pope series. I'll be watching it today now that we have a new Pope. -
I love that your sister had my same bedroom set. My grandma bought it for me when I was probably 3 years old. I was her only granddaughter and she loved to spoil me. I’m happy someone takes broken lawnmowers and other power equipment because my hubby isn’t the person to fix anything 🤣 He tries, but it’s just not his wheelhouse.
Yes, I’ve had the displeasure of meeting that neighbor. I posted about it years ago. He yelled at us for stacking wood on OUR property because it was blocking his view. Of what, you may ask (there are woods in between our houses) Well, it was blocking the view of our house is the only thing I can think of! Besides a urinal nailed to his tree, he also feeds the damn deer. We do NOT need to attract more deer!
$184 on a $25 bond after 68 years is crazy! We have a neighbor that puts a bunch of stuff at the curb once a year and it gets picked over pretty fast! Those names are crazy and I wonder if that coffee shop is owned by one of the twins? I would be checking it out! I love the cat meme and remember it was posted in my office when I worked at U of M and parking was absolutely ridiculous!
Sounds like your neighbor does an annual clean out. Normal! Unlike my neighbor who does it constantly. Where does that stuff come from? Maybe the coffee shop IS owned by the twin. Such an unusual name to use for coffee, so you have to wonder.
I didn't know Parma was associated with pink flamingos. In high school we mocked it by making reference to "the white socks of Parma" meaning people had no fashion sense.
I'm with you about the meme. When forced to do things I ask about parking first, knowing it is never a problem for me to not go somewhere. Love that cat.
I remember how uncool it was to wear white socks. I’ll have to ask my kids if that’s still a thing. My husband freaks about parking. He’s had a parking deck spot downtown for the last 20 years or so, so he’s grown soft 🤣
Whelp, now I have that damn Live Laugh Love song in my head. THANKS! 🤣 I don't understand all the shit your neighbors are getting rid of. Weekly? who is delivering all this stuff to them? I recently gave my girls some of there savings bonds that were up after thirty years. I believe once they hit that time, it doesn't keep gaining interest. No? I could be wrong. But man, that one had some history!
I love Flamingos, not matter where they reside. Laughing at the meme too! Good lord, why must people give their children terrible names and terribly spelled names? It's like they hate them.
I love the Chris Barron story, I had no idea about the writing of that song. I can tell you though, I met him a few years ago in Napa: he's a dick. 😂
You’re welcome! The neighbor across the street…..it’s not weekly, but it seems to be about every six weeks or so. Ok, I know my husband’s uncle gave our kids savings bonds when they were born, but I can’t for the life of me find them. The only logical place is the safe, and they are not in there. Apparently, I’m as bad as my mom 😵💫
Between the weird spellings and the bad names, I don’t understand these parents’ judgment. Just bad! Now I need full details on the Napa run in!
I didn't know that that area is known for flamingos. Learn something new every day. I did not know that about the Spin Doctor's song. Love that story. Hilarious. We jammed to Spin Doctors a ton in college. What is with that pink light? Wild. Whore house made me laugh.
184.00 after all these years? Only in America. It sounds like you have a couple of odd neighbors. I would think if they were hoarders, they wouldn't be getting rid of anything, but if they're not, where is it coming from. The pink light...that's just bizarre. I've heard of some really crazy names but I think the twins win the prize. Why would anyone call a coffee shop that? Maybe it is one of the twins that opened it. That meme cracked me up and that song is a great song to work out to.
Yeah, I would have thought it would be worth more than $184, but thank god I got it taken care of or it would have gone through probate and then the govt would have ripped us off even more. I’m glad you enjoyed the meme and the song.
The saving Bond is so cool. The pink lights don't surprise me because so many younger people around my daughter's age have those string lights all over their walls these days. My daughter has some in our living room and they change to all kinds of different colors. At night I can see different colored lights around the curtains of all the apartments around here. Seems like everyone has them.
It was a cool find. I still have some really old $2 bills I found of hers. I need to find a paper currency dealer and see if they’re worth anything. I took the old coins to one of those coin traveling things at a hotel. I got about twice the face value for them.
The cat meme is awesome. I love it when towns lean into weirdness like this. We have a few around here in Idaho that do that. There is one that has gone crazy with moose sculptures and they are painted with creative and wonderful designs.
You and I love our memes! I would enjoy seeing moose sculptures. I've only ever seen one moose in real life, at the Grand Tetons. They are amusing looking animals.
I've heard of the Orangejello and Lemonjello twins in about 20 different contexts (my kids swear they were fellow-students at their high school). I've come to think of it as one of those urban legends. . .
Well, I know my daughter didn’t make it up. It’s possible it was a thing to name twins that in the 90’s. My kids went to school with some other food names, such as Cinnamon and Cherry.
It's not Christmas tree needles that I often spot on the pavement, but rather plastic flossers. What's up with that I wonder? Are people flossing in public or is this some sort of prank. If you or anyone else knows, please share. As for the unusual names, I wonder what's with the parents. Did they want unusual names themselves?
I’ve only seen the Christmas tree needles in my house. The flossers are indeed everywhere and I’ve featured a few pictures in Weird Wednesdays past. My husband thinks people are flossing in their cars and then littering, but who knows?
I didn't know that about Parma and Flamingo's, but love the large one you found. Some cities paint fire hydrants to get people to walk or ride around and find them. Finding the savings bond was great. I had a few from my first job but only managed to keep them about 5 years, so didn't get much. Scenic ...lol. You gotta see if you can find out what the pink light is, you've got me curious. I used to work with someone who's last name was Trees. It was a big family and they all had first names of trees...she was the only girl and her name was Merry Christmas Trees, one of her brothers was Jack Pine, one was Douglas Fir...no lie. I can't remember the others names.
I have seen some small towns put painted objects around town. There are bison in West Yellowstone, Montana which is cool. The Trees family is both crazy and amazing! How very interesting!!!!
That's a shame all of that stuff goes to the landfill instead of her giving it away on the free neighborhood group or to charity. Maybe they run a resell shop and just use their regular trash service to discard those unsold items each week? Very odd!
OMG, yes! I still find those stupid needles from our tree too. It's infuriating!
I have a new appreciation for the Spin Doctor's song now. I love petty stories like that. When I started my business, my (ex) best friend made some snarky comment that I was never going to be a millionaire and stop having high hopes for it. Well, the goal never was to become rich. It was to become financially stable on my own terms without working for "the man". I'm pretty close to my sales goals, and once I hit that million in sales in one year, I fully plan on engraving my bank statement on a cutting board and shipping it to her with a "thanks for the motivation to prove you wrong" note along with it. The funny thing is, I don't even give AF about the sales numbers as long as my bills are paid, but my petty side is pushing me to work just a little bit harder each day to get that satisfaction of shipping out her eff you gift. I'll send her a copy of this single now, too LOL
Yeah, I don’t know what goes on with some of these neighbors! Omg, what a rude and nasty thing that your former friend said. I always feel as though when people say mean crap like that, they’re jealous. She probably wished she had her own business. I’m so proud of you, Theresa! What an accomplishment to set a goal like that and succeed! You’re living the dream!
I'm in awe about the savings bond and the date!!! OMG, that was issued only two years after I was born.

ReplyDeleteSounds like your neighbor does an annual clean out. Normal! Unlike my neighbor who does it constantly. Where does that stuff come from? Maybe the coffee shop IS owned by the twin. Such an unusual name to use for coffee, so you have to wonder.
DeleteI didn't know Parma was associated with pink flamingos. In high school we mocked it by making reference to "the white socks of Parma" meaning people had no fashion sense.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you about the meme. When forced to do things I ask about parking first, knowing it is never a problem for me to not go somewhere. Love that cat.
I'm grooving to the Pickle song. Hilarious.
I remember how uncool it was to wear white socks. I’ll have to ask my kids if that’s still a thing. My husband freaks about parking. He’s had a parking deck spot downtown for the last 20 years or so, so he’s grown soft 🤣
DeleteWhelp, now I have that damn Live Laugh Love song in my head. THANKS! 🤣
ReplyDeleteI don't understand all the shit your neighbors are getting rid of. Weekly? who is delivering all this stuff to them?
DeleteBetween the weird spellings and the bad names, I don’t understand these parents’ judgment.
ReplyDeleteWell, not real flamingos, just the plastic version! It was a great Spin Doctors song!
Delete184.00 after all these years? Only in America.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have a couple of odd neighbors.
DeleteThe saving Bond is so cool.
ReplyDeleteThe pink lights don't surprise me because so many younger people around my daughter's age have those string lights all over their walls these days.
DeleteThe cat meme is awesome. I love it when towns lean into weirdness like this. We have a few around here in Idaho that do that. There is one that has gone crazy with moose sculptures and they are painted with creative and wonderful designs.
ReplyDeleteYou and I love our memes! I would enjoy seeing moose sculptures. I've only ever seen one moose in real life, at the Grand Tetons. They are amusing looking animals.
DeleteI've heard of the Orangejello and Lemonjello twins in about 20 different contexts (my kids swear they were fellow-students at their high school). I've come to think of it as one of those urban legends. . .
ReplyDeletepronounced o-RON-je-lo and le-MON-je-lo
DeleteWell, I know my daughter didn’t make it up. It’s possible it was a thing to name twins that in the 90’s. My kids went to school with some other food names, such as Cinnamon and Cherry.
DeleteIt's not Christmas tree needles that I often spot on the pavement, but rather plastic flossers. What's up with that I wonder? Are people flossing in public or is this some sort of prank. If you or anyone else knows, please share. As for the unusual names, I wonder what's with the parents. Did they want unusual names themselves?
ReplyDeleteI’ve only seen the Christmas tree needles in my house. The flossers are indeed everywhere and I’ve featured a few pictures in Weird Wednesdays past. My husband thinks people are flossing in their cars and then littering, but who knows?
DeleteI didn't know that about Parma and Flamingo's, but love the large one you found.
ReplyDeleteI have seen some small towns put painted objects around town. There are bison in West Yellowstone, Montana which is cool. The Trees family is both crazy and amazing! How very interesting!!!!
DeleteThat's a shame all of that stuff goes to the landfill instead of her giving it away on the free neighborhood group or to charity. Maybe they run a resell shop and just use their regular trash service to discard those unsold items each week? Very odd!
ReplyDeleteOMG, yes!
