Wild & Wonderful Wednesday: ‘People’ In My Neighborhood Edition

A short one featuring pictures I've taken in the hood over the last few weeks:

On the SAME street as the discarded Clifford (a previous post) was the Headless Santa. To say that I was startled on my walk is an understatement.

I have no clue what these humongous bags were all about in someone's driveway.

One day, Middle Child came home from a walk and said she saw a baby skunk. She told me the house she saw it near, and sure enough, the next day I saw the baby skunk. I carefully made my way across the street to avoid being sprayed (if baby skunks have that capability?) A few days later, in the same spot as I had seen the baby skunk, this random lemon slice appeared. So many questions . . .

This massive rock sits along someone's driveway (and that neighbor is a whole 'nother story). Last week, either a gang symbol or a petroglyph was painted on it.

The Buddha Frog makes its appearance every summer.

This was a water slide that someone rented for their front yard. I wanted to take a picture from the front, but didn't want to look like a pedophile taking pictures of children.

Our owl has returned!

Like clockwork, we've been seeing newborn fawns since Memorial Day weekend. This guy/gal with Mama is now 6 weeks old.

Any wildlife in your neighborhood? Random pieces of fruit? Wild birthday parties?

  1. Yes, that headless Santa is quite startling. Reminds me of the "Headless Horseman from Sleepy Hollow!" I'm confused as to why someone placed it outside, considering that Christmas is FIVE months away!? LOL!

OMG, those humongous trash bags look like what Philly looked like since July 1st, during the Philadelphia sanitation strike -- trash bags were thrown all over the city. Thank God that strike is over because with the heat we've had this summer, the city smelled like a dumpster. Lucky for me, I live in an apartment building that has a contract with the Philadelphia Sanitation Dept. that requires them to pick up our trash regardless of a strike.

That Buddha frog is adorable! I don't know if you knew this, but I collect Buddha statues, yet I've never had a FROG Buddha.

And how cool that you have an OWL in your neighborhood. I find owl utterly fascinating!

I am so in awe of the wildlife you have all around you - deer (great photo capture, btw), skunks, owls, etc. I think it's wonderful. The only wildlife we get in Philly are mice and rats. Ha!

FUN neighborhood addition post, my friend! Thoroughly enjoyed! Happy Mid-week!

    1. Although it wasn't trash day when I saw the Santa, I'm assuming it was meant for the garbage truck? It's gone now! I remember the last time I was in NYC, there were trash bags EVERYWHERE! You could barely navigate the sidewalks. At least it was April, so no heat. In fact, it was quite cold and rainy. I think I remember that you collect Buddhas. That frog is adorable. Yes, we do get a lot of wildlife here. It's surprising to be close to a major city and have this much. When I was growing up in a suburb of Akron, we didn't have any wildlife. I don't even remember squirrels or chipmunks. I think we did see a rabbit from time to time. Have a great week, Ron. XO

  2. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD? It is like a whole collection of short stories waiting to be written. Poor Santa! How did he get decapitated? What is in those bags? I mean seriously, what could it be? House insulation? Possibly. Dead bodies wrapped up in layers of bubble wrap? I mean, anything is possible. Maybe someone is trying to deodorize via lemon slices? I do like the Buddha frog, I kind of wish he was in my garden. Also also also how does someone's driveway get tagged like that? So many questions. So many! We also have an owl family around here, although I haven't seen them for a while. I am like Snow White in the middle of the wilderness, we have all sorts of birdies and deer and coyotes, often a bear family. There's a bobcat in the winter too. My fave are the quail. They are so cute. The baby quail, there are usually like ten of them per family and in the spring they are all the size of golf balls, scurrying around. Adorable!
I love this post, and also, a huge bouncy waterslide IN THE FRONT YARD. I mean. Your neighbourhood is so fun and interesting!

    1. It's always interesting around here, that's for sure! I was thinking that the bags could possibly be filled with insulation as they had a pink tint, but there were no business type trucks around and I can't imagine a homeowner removing insulation by themselves? Who knows! Good thoughts on the lemon slice deodorizing a skunk birthplace! LOL! That rock being tagged is sooo strange. The driveway is nearly a mile long and the photo is near the entrance. There are security cameras around, so I do have to wonder. You have me beat on the wildlife as the one thing we do not have are bears, although we hear of bears wandering around the area from time to time. We for sure do not have quail and I would love to see them.

  3. Okay, those are some reallllly weird things going on in your neighbourhood.
I am always so intrigued when I walk by neighbourhoods and garbage day and see the various things out at the curb. Everything has a story and we only see a little sliver of what's going on which makes it all the more intriguing!

    1. Sunday nights (Monday mornings is trash pick up) are the best night to walk around here. Though I’ve noticed that with large items (like Santa) people don’t follow those rules.

  4. A headless Santa is weird, but even weirder in July! WTH?
I wonder if the Mama skunk is around? Do they just leave them there, with a slice of lemon and say Good Luck?
I'm guessing the big bags of stuff is probably insulation? Maybe a renovation is happening, or just revamping the attic space?
I love the buddha frog, the sweet deer and of course the owl is a hoot! I still haven't seen one of those in the wild. (I'm not counting burrowing owls, as those are very common in Florida)
The slide is surly a hit for a kids party in the heat of the summer, and we had no doubt of your NOT being a pedo.
While we were in GA, we captured pictures of bears, deer, raccoons, bunnies, hawks on our Ranch Cameras, and I saw in person wild turkeys, deer, geese and blue herons. ;) I love nature!

    1. You've not heard of Christmas in July?? I'm guessing it was a basement clean out. I like the idea of the mama skunk just leaving a lemon slice and saying ta-ta! LOL! Thank you for not thinking of me as a pedo. Your ranch cameras sound like fun viewing! Aren't wild turkeys hilarious?? I hope the bears are friendly, like Winnie the Pooh :)

  5. I like the Buddha frog. None around here though. No wild birthday parties anymore. Kids around here are older now so parties seem to be a thing of the past. Or maybe everyone has become antisocial? Who's to say!

    1. I'm just glad the kids were outside playing and that it wasn't a garage party. I didn't know that was a thing until I moved to the Cleveland area. It's very weird!

  6. I love the Buddha frog but other than that, what the heck is going on in your neighborhood? Headless Santa, skunk babies stench covered by a lemon slice, a LOT of mysterious large bags filled with who knows what and hyroglifics on a boulder in a drive way. It's all just too funny!!
We have had so many baby bunnies this year along with groundhogs, hawks flying over and deer. SO many baby deer this year. One morning I saw the mother deer had jumped the neighbors 4 foot fence to graze leaving her 3 babies on the other side jumping and playing. I think she just needed a break. lol

    1. It's amazing what I see on my walks! Too much fun stuff to not share it. I see a rabbit here and there in the summer and I think one used to live under our deck, but then we saw some fur one day and haven't seen it since, so that was sad. My neighbor had 3 fawns in her backyard a few weeks ago. I'm hoping they stay in the neighbor's yard.

  7. It's so fun to walk around neighborhoods to see the different things people put out! Not so sure about the headless Santa though! Someone must have been playing a prank! Too bad about painting that giant rock! Curious as to what was in those large bags!

  8. Buddha Frog! I have one in my garden, but I like that one better. The slide made me laugh — you taking pictures and the neighbors calling the police because they think you’re a pedophile. OFFICER — I’M JUST SHARING THIS ON MY BLOG! (Oh wait — that probably made it worse 🤣) I love it!

We have an inflatable Bumble (from the movie Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) that goes up in the neighborhood next to ours every December, and Mike and I get so excited. We take pictures of it. One year, we even took a selfie. Maybe we should make it a yearly Bumble selfie tradition.

    1. Yes, the old blog excuse - "Just taking pictures for my blog, officer." Actually, I always try to act nonchalant when I'm taking photos in front of someone's house! I don't want someone to come outside and ask what I'm doing. I wait for cars to drive by, too! You should post Bumble on your Instagram at Christmas!

  9. You found some great things to take pictures of in your neighborhood. I see weird stuff in my neighborhood all the time. No owls as of yet though and I would love to see one aorund here.

    1. It's funny that I see more weird stuff here than in my last neighborhood, considering the people who lived there! Are there any owls in Las Vegas? That would be something!

  10. No wildlife here except for the odd squirrel. What we do have is mailbox toppers - knitted toppers for our cylindrical mailboxes. No idea who makes them, but they get changed every few weeks. Also there's a front garden which has an enormous stag (not real obviously!).
Is the lemon slice intended to ward off the skunk? Skunks dislike the strong acidic scent of citrus fruits.
    I like the Buddha Frog.

    1. I’ve seen photos of those mailbox toppers and they are intriguing! I’m surprised it hasn’t happened here, with the popularity of knitting. I did not know that skunks disliked citrus! You may have solved the mystery.

  11. Admittedly, you did have a very interesting walk around the neighborhood, Bijoux. The headless Santa was my favorite. On one of our drives here, I've seen a very large headless skeleton (the type that people buy for their yards at Halloween). The only not-so-unusual things I've seen while walking around the city has been discarded trash and clothing and recently a couple of tired stacked and left near the library. No skunks or deer, but lots of Canada Geese, Mallard ducks and a few rabbits.

    1. Oh my, I hate those giant skeletons! People have been leaving them up year round, I've noticed. Probably too large to store inside, but I find them to be eye sores. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. You live in a very interesting neighborhood! I googled "can baby skunks spray?" – you were wise to cross the street. Yes, they can, even if their aim isn't accurate until they are six months old. I wouldn't want to take that chance!

Pretty sure I've mentioned wildlife in my yard. Deer, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and woodchucks are the most common. We also have a pair of bats that come out every summer evening at dusk and make counter-clockwise loops over the same area. They've been doing so for as long as we've lived here, presumably gobbling up mosquitoes!

    1. Well, we call them groundhogs here, but we get those, and they are adorable! Thank you for looking up the baby skunk info. It was a weird thing to come across in broad daylight. One thing I don't see in this neighborhood is bats, but my son had one fly into his head during a nighttime marching band practice in high school. I probably should have taken him to get checked for rabies, but he didn't tell me until months after (insert eye roll).

  14. The headless Santa really stumps me. Why? It's not December. There was a red tailed hawk on Mary Ann's basketball hoop last night. All the tiny birds nearby were going crazy, because he was hunting them. There's a house near us and I keep meaning to post this, but there's always BIG stories. Anyway, this house has a lot for sale sign. Um, it's not a lot (I don't think anyone would consider it a lot) - it's their front yard. They want to divide their property but no one seems to want to do that. The sign has been up for years. No one wants to live in your front yard. So weird.

    1. I’m guessing Santa was being thrown away, although it wasn’t trash day. Not that people follow the rules anymore 🙄 Okay, that is crazy about someone trying to sell their front yard 🤣🤣🤣 Is it For Sale By Owner or have they got a realtor involved in their scheme?

  16. Well, you certainly found a variety of things to photograph.
It's not everyday you see a headless Santa, but I like the Buddha Frog.

Nothing too startling around my neighbourhood, just plenty of birds and squirrels in the garden.

    All the best Jan

  17. There's a lot going on in your neighborhood! About a month ago I was taking my great dane for a walk around midnight. He seemed interested on pulling me to the side of the road because there was a plastic bag floating about 5 feet from us in the grass. I was like "It's a freaking plastic bag. Knock it off." So I turned on my phone's flashlight only to realize it was a skunk running along side us. Its tail was swishing as it ran and it really sounded like a plastic bag floating across the grass. Super glad it didn't see us as a threat! But we sure high tailed it to the other side of the street. On the next road over, there are 3 baby skunks that like to play in a certain yard that we see occasionally on our night walks. We noticed one of them is an albino skunk and my daughter lost her mind trying to get a better look at it. I just read that there's an uptick on the skunk population in the US, so I imagine we'll encounter more this summer. Fingers crossed we don't get sprayed though!

    1. Holy smokes! A skunk running along side you? The albino skunk would be something to see. It’s weird that I never see skunks and now that I’ve seen a baby one, I’m hearing more and more about them.

  18. So many questions indeed! The headless Santa is so weird to me?! Why is Santa still outside in July hahaha! And why behead him? Also why does Buddha frog only appear in summer? I've never really paid much attention to my own neighbourhood. It's mostly the bird-folk that I notice. Last week I walked into a massive bird fight on top of my neighbours roof. Three or four birds were ganging up on another. Hours later I had a trail of feathers all over the backyard. I hope he/she was ok. I was worried I'd come across a little body but I haven't spotted anything since.

  19. Impressive you know the deer is six weeks old. I wonder why the Buddha frog only makes an appearance in the summer. I also wonder if that rock graffiti was a B (looked like it) as in the first initial of that's family's last name? It looks sort of pretty. Keep us posted on the giant bags. And you can rent a blow up water slide? That sounds amazing!

    3. Oooohhh. Makes sense about the brass.

  20. Boy, you sure live in a funky neighborhood. I got a kick out of the headless Santa.

There's a house in my neighborhood where the owners put out a skeleton for Halloween and never took it down. I've gotten used to seeing the thing.

I saw a skunk--full grown--early one morning on my way to the gym. I was tempted to get a picture, but I didn't want to risk being sprayed. I love the owl and fawn photos.
