Music Monday: Losing Out On Lost 80's Live 2025

A concert my husband and I were really looking forward to this year was Lost 80's Live. It's a tour of new wave bands from the 1980's consisting of two 'headliners' along with seven or so 'one hit wonders.' There is a new show every year, but this would have been our first time attending one. The headliners were Flock of Seagulls and Big Country.

Our first disappointment was learning that Richard Blade would not be hosting our show, even though he was hosting all the others around the country. 'Conflicting dates' or something like that. Yes, he'll skip the Rock and Roll Capital of the World, thank you very much. I feel as though that foreshadowed what was to come . . .

The evening started out great. I will share my photos and the youtube videos of the hits you may recognize. Some were featured in iconic films of that era, like 'Pretty in Pink' and 'Valley Girl.' These opening acts each played between two and six songs.

Belois Some

Their hit, 'Imagination'

Josie Cotton

Her hit, 'Johnny Are You Queer'
She said she was banned from Amsterdam for singing that song in 1982!!! Who gets banned in Amsterdam?

The Polecats (note the lead singer bending down with the orange hair)

Singing their rockabilly hit, 'Make a Circuit With Me'

China Crisis. This is the one group I was not familiar with. When the lead singer came out, he even said, "You're probably wondering who the fu*k is China Crisis? Tomorrow at the office, you will be googling us!" He wasn't wrong! The funny part was, they were my favorite act of the night. He was quite the showman. He wore a pink blazer and a tie and threw the tie to a woman in the front row. She was super pumped!

I guess their most well-known song was 'Wishful Thinking,' though I did not recognize it.

I did not get a photo, but this is Icicle Works singing their hit, 'Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream).' The woman sitting next to me told me she drove seven hours just to see this band. I think she was disappointed that they only sang two songs.

The Vapors

Their banger, 'Turning Japanese'

This is where the show went south. There was usually a 10-15 minute break between bands for them to set up. But after The Vapors performed the above song, we saw someone rush onto the stage and the curtain was closed. We thought maybe a drunk fan had climbed up there. We waited. And waited. And waited. Fifteen minutes passed. Then 30. After an hour, someone finally came out on stage and said that the drummer of The Vapors had collapsed after the set, had to be revived with a defibrillator, and was rushed to the hospital. We were told that General Public and Big Country would not be performing and that the Flock of Seagulls would finish the show with just two songs.

Flock of Seagulls

They sang 'Space Age Love Song' and their mega-hit, 'I Ran'

Then the show abruptly ended. It was a very strange night. It would have been nice if we'd been told a little sooner what was going on. The tickets were not cheap and we were definitely disappointed to not hear General Public or Big Country at all or to get a full set from Flock of Seagulls. As my husband said, "What happened to 'The Show Must Go On'?"

What say you? The show must go on or just send people home? How many of the hits did you know?

**I'll be taking another blogger break for a few weeks in September. See you at the end of the month!**

  1. It's so ironic because yesterday at work, I was talking with someone about the 80s and how it was my favorite decade for music. Also, overall, the 80s was one of my favorite decades. I also thought the 70s were fabulous as well.

Watching these video clips brought back a ton of great memories for me!

"She said she was banned from Amsterdam for singing that song in 1982!!! Who gets banned in Amsterdam?" - I'm not surprised because I spent a summer in Amsterdam, and it's extremely open and free when it comes to stuff like that. I was there in 1976.

I too have never heard of China Crisis, but I REALLY enjoyed the video!

Like with all decades, 80s music had such a definable "sound" that you can instantly say, " Yup...that's the 80s!"

"Turning Japanese" - OMG, a flashback to the 80s!!!! I'm going to be singing that song all day today. LOL!

"I Ran (So Far Away) (Video)" - Back then, that was one of my favorites.

So sorry to hear that your evening went SOUTH. I'm with you, I think you should have been told sooner. I also think you should have been given a refund, or at least a partial refund.

Enjoyed this flashback to the 80s, my friend! Thanks so much for sharing. You got some really awesome photographs!

Happy Labor Day! And enjoy your September break.

    X

    1. It was definitely my favorite decade for music and fashion. So defining! My husband and I always wonder how people will describe the 2000’s and 2010 decades? There doesn’t seem to be anything that stands out besides the Britney Spears or Backstreet Boys era.

Yes, that Turning Japanese song is a real ear worm, isn’t it? How in the world did they come up with that? All those bands were so original. That’s what I love about the New Wave songs. Everything was unique.

I’m always glad to see your comments and know you’re still out there, Ron. Enjoy the Fall! XO

Yes, I wonder the same thing!!!! And not only when it comes to music, but "fashion/style" as well.

  2. First off, I'm glad that A Flock of Seagulls played "Space Age Love Song." That's always been my favorite of theirs. But....what a gyp! I'm sorry for the medical emergency, but it would have been nice if the other bands had played (or at the very least, you were offered a partial refund).

I've never heard of China Crisis either.

    1. Yes, I was glad we at least got ‘Space Age Love Song,’ and not just ‘ I Ran.’ It would have been more understandable if the ill drummer played for the bands that decided to not play, but that didn’t seem to be the case.

  3. That's really bad, just ending the show and not telling anyone what's going on. And did you get a refund for the shortened show?

    ReplyDelete
  4. The show should have gone on. Or they should have refunded at least partial ticket price.

  5. I hope that guy is okay! It must have been scary for everyone involved. Too bad they didn't give you a partial refund or something, it does sound like a very odd night. You must have been very disappointed!

    1. My husband heard Richard Blade talk about it the next day on Sirius and at that time, the drummer was doing okay in the hospital. It was the first concert I left in a somber mood.

  6. Sounds like a fun concert for a while anyway! Hope the drummer is ok.

  7. Ah, that sounds like such a rollercoaster. I love how you captured the excitement of the opening acts and the little surprises like China Crisis stealing the show but I’m so sorry the drummer collapsing ruined the plans; it must have been such a mix of worry and disappointment.

  8. Well, it does sound like you guys were having fun for while at least. That's sad about the drummer but I don't understand why someone didn't keep everyone informed and give at least a partial refund. What a frustrating way to end a concert. Enjoy your September break!!

  9. I love Richard Blade! I saw he was going to be emceeing a concert here (Howard Jones) at a casino, and I wanted to go so badly, but we had plans on that date. So I get why you’d be upset — that is a big part of the show!

I read in your comment that the performer is doing better — how crazy and bizarre!

I’m sorry the concert was cut short. I love a lot of those bands, so what a fun show. But it would’ve been nice if they refunded part of your ticket.

    Enjoy your break. 😘💜

  10. I love 80's music so much. I wish I knew at that time, how the music would always stay with me!
That being said, I've never heard of China Crisis and don't recall Polecat at all.

Richard Blade! What could he possibly had that would have been better than this?

Oh my, the poor guy from The Vapors. I mean, did he get The Vapors himself? Glad he is ok. Yes, it's weird that they just up and skipped two of the bigger bands, and that FOS shortened their set. You got ripped off, and I would be disappointed as well.

I don't know that I would drive seven hours for anyone other than my immediate family; that is wild.

It's hilarious that Johnny are you queer was an issue in Amsterdam back in the day. I mean, now, people walk around half naked, and still, we don't know if they are male or female. 😂

I hope you are going on a nice trip in September!

    1. Isn't it funny that we never heard of China Crisis? That name would have stuck out. I'm surprised you don't remember the 'Make A Circuit With Me' song. That was pretty popular. I suppose Richard Blade is in great demand or something? LOL! The tour had just started at the end of July and this was early August that we saw the concert, so he shouldn't have needed a break yet!

I wouldn't drive seven hours to see a show, either. However, we have friends who flew to Vegas to see the Eagles at the Sphere, so nothing surprises me. We do have a trip; let's hope it goes smoothly. This year has not been the best.

  11. I probably would've only recognized the Flock of Seagulls songs. I'm bummed that it pittered out the way it did. That stinks. I do think the show must go on - usually that's the way it is in show biz, right?

    1. It was such a somber ending to what should have been a really fun experience. I'm glad to hear you recognized the headliner!

  12. Definitely agree that the other performers should have performed and that the audience should have been informed sooner about what was happening backstage. Good to read that the drummer was recovering. I am not an 80s music fan but stuck more in the 50s and 60s, but did appreciate the included videos, especially the one banned in Amsterdam…really odd. Enjoy yiur blog break, Bijoux, and hopefully you will dnjoy some fun times.

  13. I'm sorry about you getting skipped. So disappointing. I can't imagine being a performer on the road like, that, occasionally losing your mind from the schedule and wishing you hadn't signed on the dotted line for quite so many obligations.

  15. A podcast I listen to was just talking about this concert but it was before the incident with the drummer for the Vapors. Most of the bands I am unfamiliar with except for A Flock of Seagulls and Big Country, and I only know the one song from BC. I think I was probably in my metal phase and these bands were not cool enough. Ha. Bummer about the show but I am glad you got to enjoy some of it. Enjoy your break and talk soon.

    1. Oh, that’s interesting that you heard about the tour! Yes, I’m sure those bands were not cool to a metal head, like disco became uncool once new wave/punk came onto the scene.

  16. Oh, that's terrible for the poor guy to have such a serious health crisis! But making the audience wait for an hour with no mention of "hey, we're having a medical emergency. please be patient!" is odd. Let people know what's going on for crying out loud. The show should have gone on, imo, or partial refunds should have been issued. You paid for a full show and didn't get one and that's not a good way to treat the people who bought those tickets in good faith.

    1. Ticketmaster strikes again! But yes, it was a sad thing to have happen to the guy on stage. Thankfully, he was not far from some of the best hospital systems in the world.

  17. Welp, that's a weird story about your concert experience. I don't know that I'd have had the patience to wait that long to see if the show was going to go on. Shaking my head about how things can go south so quickly.

  18. Wow, what a rollercoaster of a night. It’s hard to enjoy a show when you’re worried about someone’s health, but I can see why it was so disappointing not to get the full line-up. I laughed a little at the China Crisis lead singer’s energy though what a way to make a new fan. It’s a shame the night ended so abruptly, but at least you got a story to tell and some memories from the bands that did perform.

  19. I'm a "the show must go on" kinda girl AND you should've gotten a refund. Totally sucks that they just cut things off like that. I liked all of the songs but I only knew the Flock of Seagulls songs and Turning Japanese, which, weirdly enough is a song we sing quite often in our home. Lol. - I am wishing you safe travels as you go out n' about in this beautiful month of September. You deserve a little getaway time. Take lots of pics and document everything so you can share with us. :) - We'll miss you. xoxo

    1. It was a rip off for sure, and it doesn't encourage us to attend again if the tour comes this way next year. Oh man, once that Turning Japanese gets stuck in your head, it's hard to get rid of it! I'm surprised you didn't recognize other songs. What music were you listening to? Def Leppard?? Journey?? AC/DC? You know I'll be posting travel pics next time! XO

  20. Wow, what a drag! I don't understand why General Public and Big Country didn't perform? That sucks. You should've gotten your money back.

I saw Big Country in NYC back in the Eighties, and I know The Vapors, General Public and Josie Cotten. I'm sorry this evening was a bust. Enjoy your time off, dear friend!

  22. Oh no, what a wild night. I am so sorry that happened, it must have been such a bummer after you were so excited to go. Your photos are awesome, though, and it sounds like the first half of the show was so fun, especially that China Crisis guy! And wow, the story about the drummer is so scary! I totally get being disappointed, but I think they made the right call to stop the show. A person's health is so much more important than a concert. I'm glad to hear the drummer was revived! And I knew 'Turning Japanese' and 'I Ran' for sure! Thanks for sharing the story, it's so crazy!
