Photo Friday: I Went From Phoenix, Arizona All the Way To Sedona

My husband and I, along with Middle Child, enjoyed a trip out west to visit some old favorites as well as see some new sights. We had the best time! As I took about a hundred photos, I'm going to divide the trip into three parts. Here is part one:

After flying into Phoenix and picking up the car rental, we drove to Coconut's for lunch. My husband and I have been raving about the fish tacos we had in Maui for the past nine years and Coconuts has two locations in Arizona. Otherwise, you have to fly to Maui. Yes, they were as good as we remembered, though maybe a bit smaller.

Then we headed to Montezuma Castle National Monument. It's a five-story, 20 room cliff dwelling built 100 feet above the valley and occupied sometime between 1100-1300 AD by Southern Sinagua indigenous people. Very cool to see!

It is believed that later tribes occupied the caves that are closer to the ground.

Afterwards, we continued north . . .

This was my third time visiting Sedona and honestly, you forget how magnificent it is! Imagine driving and seeing Bell Rock straight ahead. It's truly breathtaking.

Friends of ours recommended that we stay at Sky Ranch Lodge and it ended up being one of my most favorite places I've stayed anywhere. There are 94 rooms spread out between multiple buildings, all either one or two stories. Each room has a front door and either a patio or deck door that looked out onto various desert gardens. They host weddings on the weekends and while we were there, a couple named Wyatt and Sedona were married. The backdrop for the ceremony is stunning.

Instead of a restaurant or bar, there is this Airstream trailer that has breakfast and happy hour.

We enjoyed our breakfast each morning with this as the view.

The lodge is situated next to Airport Mesa, a popular Sedona sunset lookout.

While there were probably 75 people at the lookout each night, we had this private viewing on the lodge property.

Desert sunsets are spectacular!

We visited Chapel of the Holy Cross. This is the outside of the chapel, taken from below.

View from atop, outside the chapel.

We arrived when the gates opened at 8:45 AM, so I was lucky to get this shot before it became crowded. Several million people visit every year. The moment I stepped inside, I got all choked up. Pictures do not do it justice.

There is a spot where you can stand to the left of the altar to see Jesus looking down on you. Afterwards, I asked my husband if his eyes filled with tears and he said the same feeling came over him. It was either the Holy Spirt or the vortex!

We drove the Red Rock Loop twice. No words, just pictures . . .

A person with a lot of money to waste built this house. It's called Red Tail Cliff (I looked it up) and those wires are for the tram the family has to take to reach the home.

You know we had to visit some wineries on the trip. This was Alcantara. We enjoyed a flight overlooking the vineyard.

We also visited Page Springs.

For dinner one night, we were able to walk to the famous Mesa Grill from the lodge. The restaurant is located at the very small Sedona airport. The back of the restaurant is all windows, overlooking the red rocks and the short runway. We only saw one private plane take off.

We had a unique appetizer: eggplant meatballs. They were good, but the Swedish farm cheese (new to us) skewer was fabulous. I had the blackened salmon Caesar salad, which was very good.

Another beautiful sunset.

On our final morning, we watched the sunrise cast its glow on Airport Mesa.

Then we hit the road for our next adventure.

Is there a menu item you still talk about, years later? Favorite sunset location?

Part 2 (hopefully) next week! If I haven't caught up with you yet, expect me soon.

  1. Looks like a fabulous trip. Bell Rock looks amazing even in the photo. In reality it must be breathtaking. The Red Tail Cliff house is a complete eyesore. How come it was ever allowed?
As for menu items, I still remember a wonderful tiramisu in a Florence restaurant many years ago. I've never had a tiramisu to equal it.

    1. Yes, pictures never do justice to Sedona or many of the desert southwest sights. That tiramisu sounds like a wonderful memory and I bet it was so authentic.

  2. I love Arizona, and Sedona is such a gorgeous spot on our planet. Yes, to the Vortex, and that chapel is so lovely. I, too, would have had all the feels in there!

Your lodge/resort sounds like my kind of place too; how sweet that a friend had such a great recommendation for you.

I never would have thought to have fish tacos in the desert, but you knew from experience what the restaurant could do. I don't recall a meal that we had that we've tried to recreate or revisit. Hmmmm, surely there is one, but my memory is going south.

We have some amazing sunsets, but I'm such a fan of the desert, that it could be a toss-up for me.

    1. I’m a huge fan of Arizona and Utah. States I don’t mind returning to again and again. Just like Florida!!! When we returned from Maui in 2016, I googled Coconuts and couldn’t believe the only other locations were in the Phoenix area. We finally got there! I still choose a sunset over water , but the desert ones definitely have its charm.

  3. Those landscapes are STUNNING. The views really do look otherworldly in the best possible way.
And the food looks delicious. What a great trip.
And now I am off to hum Rock'n Me all day ;)

    1. They really are otherworldly, which is probably why UFO sightings are so common out there 🤣. We actually had to drive by a restaurant we took our kids to back in 2004 called the Red Planet Diner. They still talk about it. Unfortunately, it’s now a regular old Mexican restaurant.

  4. Wow, you got some magnificent pictures. I've never been to Sedona. Maybe one of these days. From your pictures I think I would like it.

  5. There are a lot of beautiful places in the U.S., but I swear, the desert SW is unique. There's just something about those rocks! Looks like an amazing trip.

Menu item I rave about? Too many to count! Probably the oysters wiht mignonette at Interurban in Portland. Nothing unique, just fresh and delicious.

My favorite sunset location is a toss-up between the Oregon coast and the Badlands. Both are spectacular!

  6. Do you know what's ironic? My dear friend Diana, who lives in San Antonio, TX, has a brother who lives in Arizona, just came back from visiting him in Sedona (she and her son drove there) and raved about it. In fact, she is thinking of selling her house and moving there. THAT'S how much she loves it. And judging from your photos, I can see WHY!

Wow, that shot you captured of Bell Rock is stunning! And the lodge where you stayed is so charming.

"Desert sunsets are spectacular!" - spectacular indeed!

I too would have gotten choked up stepping inside that chapel. That crucifix is like nothing else I've ever seen. It's incredible! Like cemeteries, I enjoy visiting various churches/chapels/cathedrals because I find them so moving.

"and those wires are for the tram the family has to take to reach the home." --- I can't imagine having to do that every single time?!?

Both the charcuterie board and appetizer looked so delicious.

One of my favorite things on a menu was a falafel wrap from a restaurant in Philly called, European Republic. Truly the best falafel I've ever had.

Even though I no longer live there, some of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen were in Florida - especially the ones at the Southernmost Point in Key West.

I am SO happy that you took this trip and had a wonderful time. You SO deserved it. And thanks for sharing it with us. Looking forward to Part 2!

Have a fabulous weekend, my friend! X

    1. I can’t believe Diana just came back from Sedona! If we had the funds, we would definitely buy a second home there. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. And Chapel of the Holy Cross is like the crown of Sedona. It was unreal to be up there, looking out at all the rock formations.

I’m with you on the Florida sunsets. They are just gorgeous. But I actually think their sunrises are even better. Hope you’re having a great weekend!

  7. These photos are stunning. How awesome that you enjoyed the recommended accommodations so much. Eat it here or Maui- that’s quite a hike. Glad the food measured up. I have eaten some meals that I enjoy but cannot recall anything that noteworthy.

    1. I fell in love with Sky Ranch. It’s the perfect location and tucked away from the busy roads. Wandering the grounds was so peaceful. I’m wondering if your food issues just make meals less enjoyable?

  8. I've always wanted to go to Sedona! This looks so beautiful! I used to follow a traveler on YouTube years ago and he went to that chapel- it looks so stunning.

I've never had a fish taco before! But I'd have one in Hawaii for sure. 💜

I can't wait to see where else your adventure takes you....

    1. If you get the chance, GO! I can’t believe you’ve never had a fish taco. But honestly, the first time I heard about them, I thought it sounded gross. I didn’t realize the toppings are different than regular tacos. A creamy coconut coleslaw makes them amazing. Have a great weekend!

  9. I love everything about this. Your trip sounds amazing. Your photos are wonderful and I know exactly what you mean about a photo not coming close to how beautiful some things really are.
I'm glad you got to experience the fish taco again and the place you stayed sounds absolutely perfect. I've never been to Arizona and now I'm thinking we may need to go.

  14. Welcome home, Bijoux, although sometimes I wish road trips could go on forever or ag least until the next one. We missed going through Arizona when we took a cross country drive several years ago. Seeing your photos and reading the descriptions, I know we will need to correct that oversight in future. Fish tacos are one of my husband’s favorite food choices😋

  15. I've been through Arizona twice, but just in passing so I've not really experienced it proper. It really is so breathtaking there though. I love their Joshua trees and huge cacti. My mom used to drive through all the time when she was married to a truck driver and she'd have to stop to send a postcard home with some of the landscapes printed on the front, or she'd pick up trinkets from one of the Native American stands to send us.

My husband would want to make a stop for the fish tacos too. He tends to get those more often than any other meal when we dine out.

It sounds like quite the memorable trip with the landscapes, the food, the wine, and cozy lodging. I can't wait to have to to travel again some day, but in the meantime I am glad I can live vicariously through bloggers adventures like yours!

    1. Isn't the landscape surreal out there? And then when we get home, it's shockingly green! I love that your mom used to send you things from the Native American stands! We went to one near Monument Valley in 2010 and I still love the dreamcatcher turquoise necklace I got. Yeah for fish tacos!!!
