Photo Friday: The Vegas Conundrum

Why does Vegas always seem so fun when you arrive, but after two days, you can’t wait to leave? We have visited quite often, both due to its convenient starting/ending point when visiting national parks out west and also because my husband's uncle (now deceased) and aunt live there. In fact, the impetus of this trip was to visit his aunt, whom we have not seen since 2016. Her health has been declining so it was time.

After returning our rental car, we checked into the Palazzo which is attached to the Venetian.

It was our first time staying here and it turned out to be the best place we've ever stayed on the strip. All the rooms are suites, and the hotel was much easier to navigate than others. The bathroom was ginormous as well, which was nice with three people.

View from our room

We spent a day at my husband's aunt's home. While there, I came across this photo of us from our first trip to Vegas in 1996. We stayed at The Mirage for our 10th wedding anniversary. One day, his aunt and uncle took us to the Mount Charleston Lodge in the Spring Mountains. Unfortunately, the restaurant was destroyed in a fire in 2021. It was fun seeing a photo I'd never seen before.

Another day, we spent walking the strip and stopping by some favorite spots.

The Wynn

Flamingos at The Flamingo

The Bellagio Conservatory had an autumn theme.

We had only ever seen summer themes in the past, so I was happy!

Funny story: we spent about an hour roaming around the Bellagio, looking for this gelato shop. I had read that it was the best gelato in Vegas, so I wanted to try it. I asked no less than three employees where it was, and their directions reminded me of how I feel when someone explains a card game to me. If you've ever been lost in a casino, or a Vegas hotel in general, you understand. It's a damn maze.

I consider myself somewhat of a gelato connoisseur. It is hard to find authentic gelato, and this was NOT authentic. Like so many others, this had the consistency of ice cream, not gelato. The spoon should have been my first hint, as real gelato is served with a teeny, tiny spoon that is more like a plastic stick. I ordered banana. It tasted fine, but again, NOT gelato!

However, Cocolini at the Venetian did not disappoint me! I had the raspberry truffle and it was amazing, as was the view while enjoying it.

Speaking of food, we had a great breakfast one morning at Capri, the poolside restaurant in the Palazzo. It felt like being in Florida. I do not hate on Florida, ever. (Hi Suz!)

I love avocado toast and this one did not disappoint.

One evening, my husband had chicken and waffles with maple bourbon sauce at Yardbird, known for their Southern cuisine. It's not my thing, but he said it was very good. Middle Child and I had their protein power bowl, which was excellent. (**Not my photo**)

We were in Vegas from Sunday-Tuesday nights, so many of the major acts were dark those evenings. We did go to two shows: All Stars of Magic and V: The Ultimate Variety Show. Both shows were good and relatively inexpensive.

I was confused why this magician was dressed like Prince, but he did pull a cat out of thin air.

The Wizard of Oz was playing at the Sphere. Fun fact about me: I have always hated that movie! No thanks to the Sphere and their ticket prices, regardless of the show.

One negative about this trip was that we were unable to find a direct flight to Phoenix nor home from Vegas. We ended up having layovers in Chicago, and of course on the way home, our flight from Chicago was delayed four hours. BUT, we did book Main Cabin Extra for all the flights and this was my leg room!!!! Yes, I was able to cross my legs and still have tons of space. I'm not sure how I'll ever be able to fly any other way again. We didn't gamble one cent on this trip, so I think we deserved it.

Watching the sunset on the flight home.

What would be your favorite thing to do in Vegas?

Back to regularly scheduled programming next time!

  1. Hahaha: "Why does Vegas always seem so fun when you arrive, but after two days, you can’t wait to leave?" - I agree! I don't think I'll be back there, but I've been three times and felt exactly the same. We went in 2024 and stayed at the Bellagio, which was lovely - we have also stayed at the Mirage for a friend's birthday in 2015, and that was a blast, but I think the Mirage isn't so nice anymore. You know what I noticed - IT IS SO EXPENSIVE! I was surprised last year how expensive everything was.
I don't gamble at all, so what I like to do in Vegas is see a show. We saw the Cirque de Soleil fire one last year, and in 2015 saw O. I liked O better.
Like I said, I'll probably never go back there, although never say never! I liked the gardens at the Bellagio a lot.
I feel bonded with you - I hate The Wizard of Oz and everything to do with it! I have a real aversion to it, like I don't think I've even seen it the whole way through.

    1. I wish we never had to go back, but my husband is his aunt’s POA, etc. so we will be going until her estate is finalized after death. Yes, it definitely got a lot more expensive in the last 10 years. I remember staying at MGM for $39/night!! Mirage is now closed and being remodeled into a Hard Rock. You can see the cranes by it in my third picture. I love that we both hate Wizard of Oz! 🤣🤣🤣 But I also dislike acrobatic stuff, so we’ve never gone to any Cirque shows.

  2. Great photos from your vacation and how cool to see the picture of you from years ago. I don't like Wizard of Oz either. I remember watching it around Christmas with my cousins when I was probably 9 but I've never seen it since and don't care to. Have a great weekend.

    1. Another Oz hater! It’s so popular that I thought I was alone! My husband’s family loved it and even had a play set when they were growing up.

  3. Looks like a great trip. The hotel room seems quite luxurious. I know what you mean about gelato. I've tried several supposed gelatos and they were disappointing, more like ordinary ice cream as you found yourself. I always book Premium Economy on long haul flights to get enough leg room (I'm 6 foot).

    1. I’m glad I’m not the only one who can tell the difference between real gelato and ice cream. Yes, I think different airlines call it different things but I was so happy to have the leg room. My husband is also 6 feet. It can be very uncomfortable when your knees hit the seat in front of you.

  4. "Why does Vegas always seem so fun when you arrive, but after two days, you can’t wait to leave?"

I felt the same after spending a summer there. And I think it's because Vegas is a pretty much a playground that you can relish in. However, the "playing" runs it's course. Vegas is a definite "lifestyle". I'm so glad I got to experience it, but I could never live there. Both my mother and father LOVED Vegas and would go twice a year. They were bigtime gamblers.

Scrolling through your awesome photos, I got a flashback of when I was there (in 1977). The musical review I was in was at The Tropicana Hotel. Then, in Tahoe, we performed at Harrah's. I preferred Tahoe to Vegas.

Your hotel room looked beyond fabulous!

" If you've ever been lost in a casino, or a Vegas hotel in general, you understand. It's a damn maze."

LOL! You got that right! Sorry to hear your gelato experience was not good. You're right about the spoon! But that avocado toast looked delicious. As you know, I'm a HUGE fan of avocado. In fact, I had one this morning for breakfast.

GORGEOUS sunset shot from your plane window!

Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us, my friend. Enjoyed! Enjoyed! Enjoyed!

    Have a terrific weekend! X

    1. That is sooo cool that you were in a show at The Tropicana! On our first trip in 1996, that was our very first show….Folies Bergere at The Tropicana! So much fun! I have never been to Tahoe or Reno, for that matter. Likely, never will! I wouldn’t mind going to Death Valley next time we are out there, but only in the winter. Aren’t avocados so yummy? I try to have some everyday, usually in a salad. I hope you have a good weekend, Ron. I miss your posts. XO

  5. I've only been to Vegas once, and honestly, I'd be okay with never going back. But your photos are making me rethink that. Maybe just my husband and I next time. We went when the girls were younger...the trip to SLC I told you about in your last post. We stayed at The Mirage, and it makes me sad that it's gone.

Now you have me craving authentic gelato.

LV IS a damn maze. Boy, you nailed that on the head.

I also love avocado toast. There is a restaurant near me that serves only avocado toast. I KNOW.

I love those sunset plane photos. Mike sent me one the other night. 💜🌈

    1. I mean, it is fun to walk around and see the sights, but we’ve seen it all before, so the appeal is gone. We were so bummed about The Mirage! I will never forget arriving our first time and seeing the aquariums behind check in. And that tropical forest you walked through. It was also our first buffet. We had so much fun….and we were so young! It was nice to get away from our kids🤣 A restaurant that only serves avocado toast? Sign me up!

  6. I've never been to Vegas but would really like to go one day just to see. My husband has been many times for conferences and describes it the same way: the first few days are okay, but then you start feeling dirty and SO READY TO GET OUT!

  7. Thank you for not hating on Florida; it seems to be a trend in the last few years.
I've not stayed at the Pallazzo, but it looks really lovely. One thing I don't like about Vegas is the tiny hotel rooms and the GIANT mazes of casinos. We used to go every year to either a Kitchen & Bath show or the Super Bowl, which meant lots of parties.
I do love the shows, and I generally don't gamble much. A hundred bucks at the Roulette table?

You don't like The Wizard Of Oz? Is there a specific reason? My Lauren never liked it because the Flying Monkeys and the Mean Witch scared the heck out of her.

Fun fact: I've only had gelato once, and it was in Venice, Italy. I wouldn't know good or bad apart from each other.

    1. I just found the movie to be very unpleasant and creepy as a kid AND as an adult. Just hate it! I've never been to Italy, but I'll assume that's as authentic as you can get gelato. Little Italy in NYC is also very authentic. Florida is lovely!

  8. When Tara and I first started dating, we made a few trips to Vegas, and I was super excited. I'd never been there as an adult and I was drawn to the glitz and glamour like a moth to a neon flame. Tara, on the other hand, despises Vegas. I couldn't really understand why at the time, but after a couple of visits, I get it. It's fun the first couple of times, but too crowded and expensive overall. The days of 99-cent shrimp cocktails and $5 prime rib are long over, sadly.

    1. YES! It's definitely fun at the beginning. I feel as though each time, it gets more unlikeable for me. Boy, you could not beat the prices, back in the day. My kids still talk about the 24 hour buffet wrist bands we bought . . . $39 for as many buffets as you wanted in 24 hours!!!! We hit four! I think that was in 2004. Good times, long gone.

  9. Living is Vegas, I rarely go down to the Strip of Downtown anymore. My late husband used to work at the Mount Charleston Lodge. It was so pretty up there before the fire.

  10. I've never been to Vegas. I don't like gambling, so if I found myself in Vegas I'd be hanging by a lovely pool (esp if it was winter in Chicago) or I'd maybe check out a show. The food always sounds great too.

Extra leg room is the way to go. So cool that you came across a photo that you'd never seen. Looks like a fun time. The pictures of the themes, etc are really impressive.

    1. I’m not a gambler, either. I’ve played slot machines in the past, but it’s pretty boring and a waste of time and money. At least the shows and the food are fun.

  11. Totally relatable. I was in Vegas a few years ago and after a couple days, the crowds, endless walking, and sensory overload, I was ready to head home dreaming of some peace. Glad you got some family time and found real gelato at last—sounds like you made the very best of it!

  12. My favorite thing to do in Las Vegas is to go anywhere else! Last time we were there we rented a car and went to all the places around there. Red rock canyon, Hoover Dam, Laughlin, Prim, anywhere but on the actual strip! It was our best trip there ever! I should note we stayed at the Mandalay Bay Hotel about 3 months before the tragic shooting.

    1. I’ve only been to Red Rock and Hoover Dam of the places you mentioned. Mandalay Bay always seemed so nice, but the shooting really tarnished its image for me. We knew someone there at the time who had just crossed the street and entered the casino when the shooting began. He hid in a bathroom on the casino floor. Terrifying to even think about 😢

  13. What a lovely reason for the trip. It’s wonderful that you got to spend time with your husband's aunt. And finding that photo from 1996 at the Mount Charleston Lodge is a fantastic piece of trip nostalgia! It's so fun to stumble upon a memory you didn't even know existed.

I absolutely loved that photo of you guys from back in the day--what a blast from the past.

And I completely agree with your gelato comments. It ain't ice cream, damn it! I don't know why people can't get that straight.

Good idea to spring for the extra leg room on the plane. You definitely deserve it. Great post!

    1. For some reason, I thought you’d been to Vegas. As I said, it’s fun, but only in small doses. Yup, ice cream is not equal to gelato. At least you can get the real thing in Little Italy!

  15. I've never been to Vegas, but I've heard a lot of great things about the food. And that avocado toast looks amazing.

Chicken and waffles definitely seem to be having a moment. It amuses me how popular they are right now because not long after Nick and I were married (long before chicken and waffles became so popular), it came up about having chicken and waffles for dinner. His grandparents (they were from New Jersey, and I guess it wasn't a thing there), were absolutely horrified. They were convinced we were broke and being forced to eat weird food. They were ready to go out and buy us groceries. It took forever to convince them otherwise! But now they're sort of an "in" thing that people spend a decent amount of money on.

    1. That’s so funny that they thought you were broke🤣 I’ve been seeing chicken and waffles on menus here for about 10 years now. My husband will order it occasionally for something different, but it’s not my thing.

  16. One trip to Vegas was enough for me. It was cool and exciting on the first day. After that, I was over it. We did take in a Cirque show while we were there, but I was exhausted and about fell asleep through it. I did love walking through the hotels and seeing all of the decorations. That was fun. My girls like doing the rides in Old Vegas, but after going to Cedar Point for many years, weren't really impressed with them. Even the one that goes over the city nose first. That's disappointing about the gelato, but the rest of the food does look divine!

  18. I have been to Vegas only once and that was over 30 years ago so it must be totally different now. I do recall the buffets that were everywhere and the hotels back then were not as extravagant as today. No memory of where we stayed or what the room looked like, but your suite looked wonderful, Bijoux. While Thr Wizard of Oz has never been a favorite of mine, it does come in handy for having people remember my first name (Dorothy).

    1. You aren’t missing much and I’ll say, it was actually better 30 years ago. Less crowded and much less expensive. Although I do give them credit for cleaning up the streets and not having the weirdos trying to hand you business cards for illicit activities. That was horrible, back in the day.
