Let's Talk Tuesday: 2025 Holiday Recap

The boxes are back in the basement, the winter decor is on display, and I’m ready to eat my regular diet and get back into my routine. Also, I’m ready for summer. No more polar vortex, no more lake effect snow, and for the love of God, no more bomb cyclones! I now have huge branches to clean up, once they’re not buried in snow.

I did not take a ton of pictures over the holidays, but here are some highlights from the last few weeks:

Middle Child makes a gingerbread house every year and is always proud when people admire it.

My spouse always finds amusing things for the white elephant exchange at work. This year, it was a Spiderman bathtub set and 'Winter Wingman' Axe products. When my kids were in high school, Axe cologne was very popular, and you could smell those young men a mile away. We still laugh about it.

These are my mother's favorite shirts that I saved for my memory angel project.

I was happy with the way they turned out. I'm not very crafty, so the simple design worked for me. I ordered the wood angels on Amazon and made four for my grandkids and one for Middle Child, since she doesn't have any children. On the back, I wrote, ' In Memory of Great Grandma (first name) and on the wings I wrote her birth year and death year. I cried when I handed them out on Christmas Day. My kids seemed very touched by them.

My son and his wife stayed for a week with us. They love to cook and eat, so we had an international food week. On Monday, I did Mexican with chicken fajitas, rice, and beans. On Tuesday, they made us a Chinese meal. It's so strange to see my son prepare traditional (what I consider to be intricate) Chinese food, as all he ever made when he lived with us was scrambled eggs. Here, he made fried stuffed tofu with a minced pork filling.

Other dishes were king oyster mushrooms, Chinese cauliflower and red peppers, stir fried beef, and scallion pancakes. My son took me to an Asian market to get some of the ingredients. It was my first time, and I honestly did not know what anything was. It's crazy how many different fruits and vegetables they use that are not found in regular grocery stores.

On Wednesday, my husband paid homage to his Italian heritage and made meatballs and manicotti. On Christmas Eve, we went with my German background, and I made pork tenderloin with sauerkraut and baked sweet potatoes. I was exhausted and full from those four days and we hadn't even begun to make the food for our Christmas buffet. I'll spare you the details of that. We tend to make the same thing every year so as to not induce a riot.

A gift I was most proud of finding this year was this Chinese Caucasian mixed doll for my youngest granddaughter. It was the perfect size for a two-year-old and I thought it really resembled her!

I received some very nice, framed pictures of my grandkids, including a photo shoot of the youngest one done in China in October wearing a traditional Cheongsam dress with a Mandarin collar. So cute! My oldest daughter gave me a canvas collage of her kids taken at a Christmas tree farm that was beautiful. She also gave me this Peanuts puzzle that I'm currently working on. Middle Child was proud to give me a huge variety pack of green teas. With 90 tea bags, I should make it through the winter!

As is our tradition, we hosted the Cousin Party for my kids' cousins. Please note: there are five not included because we do not speak to those families, so don't feel bad if you are in that boat.

The focus is on games, not food. My husband comes up with the entertainment every year and the favorite by far was this drum challenge. Each person got a turn watching a segment of the Whitney Houston video 'I Will Always Love You' and had to hit the 'drum' at the exact moment of the beat . It's a lot harder than it looks! My daughter-in-law won and her prize was a set of electronic drumsticks.

My husband and I spent a Friday night at Home Goods and Five Below picking up prizes for the games and items for the Santa Auction. Everyone receives $20 Santa Bucks that they can use to bid on wrapped mystery items. We buy everything from giant packs of Ramen noodles . . .

fake Labubu's (IYKYK)

and silly t-shirts. We get a lot of joy from seeing their faces when they unwrap the gifts and there's often trading at the end. We've found this to be more fun than having a traditional white elephant exchange.

Some of you may remember that our brother-in-law is notorious for leaving miscellaneous weird items around our house when he visits. This year, there was a 4 pack of aromatherapy candles hidden in my laundry room. And a few days ago, while packing up Christmas, I found this key ring under our foyer tree skirt. I wouldn't be surprised if something else turns up in February.

Happy New Year! I wish you all good health and much happiness in 2026.

  1. Wow what a wonderful holiday season, Bijoux! I love how you had such an international week of very yummy food.
Your daughter did an amazing job on the gingerbread house! I love it! I adore details like the colourful pathway/ driveway to the house. And what a beautiful thing for you to do, the angel craft. Such a lovely way to honour your mother, and such a beautiful keepsake for the kids. They might not remember her, but they will remember her through this and through you.
On a lighter note, the Axe body spray! One of my son's friends used to wear that, and one day in junior high there was an Axe body spray "war" in the PE change room. THE SMELL. Nothing like adding Axe in with sweaty teen boys. Ay-yi-yi.
I love puzzles and I love Peanuts so that looks very fun. It sounds like a great time! Happy New Year!

    1. It was funny because the 'international week' wasn't even intentional. Middle Child loves doing the gingerbread house every year. It usually takes her two hours to decorate (my husband helps her assemble it). I just realized I forgot to post a photo of her gnome tree for you :( She really loved doing those diamond painting things, so I'll have to look for more of those projects for her.
I can't even with the Axe spray. I'm so glad my son was not into that. Here's to a 'fresh' start to the new year!!!

  2. WOW....the gingerbread house that Middle Child made is BEYOND fabulous! She is soooooooo creative! And she SHOULD be proud, it looks so professional!

And funny you pictured Axe because I used to use the body spray. I think I got it during the summer months one year.

"These are my mother's favorite shirts that I saved for my memory angel project."

What a fantastic idea! Those little angels are adorable! I love the color of the purple one in the middle.

"and scallion pancakes" - I never heard of them, but they look so good!

And how cute is that Chinese Caucasian doll. What a perfect gift for your granddaughter. I bet she LOVES it.

Thanks so much for sharing your 2025 holiday recap, my friend! Very much enjoyed. Wishing you and your family a Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy New Year!

    Cheers and X!

    1. Middle Child has so much fun decorating them every year, along with designing her fairy garden in the spring. I was really happy with how the memory angels turned out. The one you mentioned was my mom's favorite flannel shirt. She wore it all the time when she lived on her own. I loved that doll and I hope my granddaughter feels like it represents her some day when she's old enough to realize it. I miss your posts Ron, so hopefully I'll be reading up on what you're up to in 2026! XO

    1. The cousin party is something everyone looks forward to throughout the year. We are talking about having one in the summer, since one of the cousins had to work this year and lives out of town, so we missed seeing her and her new baby.

  4. This was absolutely lovely to read. What a fabulous doll!!!
Your holiday traditions feel rich and yet also light in the best possible way. Nothing is too serious, people have fun and feel accepted and can sink into the season.
Please be sure to blog an update of whatever your BIL left behind this year :)

  5. Your family is a lot of fun, I can tell. I loved reading this!

So many things—where do I start?? I need to start keeping a notebook by my computer like you do (I think it was you…)

Tell middle child that their gingerbread house is spectacular!

Omg, Axe spray! I remember Anna saying the halls of her middle school smelled like a mix of sweat and Axe spray. 🤣

Those angels with your mom’s shirts are so touching, friend. I love that idea.

THE FOOD! The stuffed tofu?? Gimme. And that Chinese meal looked amazing. I love that each day you paid tribute to everyone’s heritage.

I love that you found that doll for your granddaughter—being seen is being loved.

The gifts you received say so much about you—personal and loving. 💜

Cousin party looks like so much fun. Can I come next year?

    Happy New Year, my friend!

    1. LOL, yes we are FUN! I'm lucky to have married a fun person, though he does have his quirks, like not wanting to go downtown . . . that could be an entire post in itself. But yes, overall he's a good time ~ HA! Middle Child is always so proud of her creations. She's always posting stuff she makes on facebook and instagram. She generally only gets a few 'likes' so she was really happy when our BIL commented on how detailed and intricate her house was. A few days later, she quoted what he said, as she remembers everything.

I'm happy to hear that the Axe spray thing was nationwide. Or maybe I should be disturbed by that? And yes, the Chinese meal was amazing, but it took about 4 hours total for them to make it. I don't have that sort of patience. Isn't the doll so sweet?? I was so excited to find it. The woman who started the business is Asian and married to a Caucasian and she couldn't find a doll that represented her daughter. I believe it because when I started looking, all the Asian dolls were babies and had a weird stereotypical look with the eyes shut. I was so happy when I found this one. As a bonus, the hair is really soft and not plasticky feeling.

I hope your week is warm and cozy, Kari! XO

  7. I love your brother-in-law ---what a funny guy!
Bijoux, so much joy in this post...But I teared up seeing your mom's Angels. I mean, that is the sweetest thing ever and I know she is smiling, knowing her Grandkids will never forget her.

I laughed at your routine Christmas meal as to incite a riot! But man, you guys ate well all week and not just regular stuff, like FANCY stuff!
The cousin party is such a great memory maker for all involved. Girl, I could not do that Whitney Houston/Drum game. I was stressed just watching someone else try to do it.

The Riley doll was a great find. Oh, I love Ravensburger puzzles; they are what I do about 90% of the time.
Laughing at the Axe spray gift and yes, I remember boys coming around, stinking of that, looking to spend time with my precious daughters.

    Happy New Year!

    1. I’m so glad I kept those 3 shirts. I figured I could do something with them and the angels were a perfect ornament. My grandson is 8, so maybe he’ll remember my mom?

Yeah, the majority of this family does not like change in traditions. Heaven forbid I don’t make strawberry pretzel salad for Christmas 🙄🤣

That drum challenge WAS stressful! My nephew who was a music major in college went first and couldn’t do it, so I didn’t even try! Not sure how my DIL, who didn’t grow up in the US was the only one who hit it right on cue? She probably didn’t even know the song! 🤯

I’m sorry you had to deal with Axe wearing young men picking up your daughters. How long did your house smell? 🤣

  9. Wow! I want to spend the holidays with you! Sounds like so much fun, and all the food. I made a Chinese dinner once. When I was married with the kids at home. Just the regular stuff, nothing fancy, and it took forrrreeevvver and then was devoured in 30 minutes. Never again. It was sooo much work, especially making everything from scratch and getting a lot of the ingredients at the Chinese market. I've never cooked Chinese since. - We did get Chinese carry out on new years but nothing authentic of course. I was just happy to have an egg roll. Lol. - I LOVE what you did with the angels and your mom's shirts. What a great idea. I've never seen it done before. I've made the pillows and the bears for people, but these angels are perfect.

    1. Omg on your Chinese dinner! I just don’t have the patience to be in the kitchen for hours. Every time I ever made something new when my kids were growing up, they would ask afterwards if it was a PITA to make, because if I say YES, they knew they were never having it again! 🤣🤣🤣 Hey, I like egg rolls too, and I can buy dumplings at Aldi, so that’s what we have! I’m glad you liked my angels. I’ve seen the bears, but that wasn’t in my wheelhouse!

  10. The gingerbread house is intricate and awesome. Well done, Middle. Ah, the food. So much good food. We hosted each side - mine on the 25th and his on the 27th. Similar food was served and I made a ton of desserts (made so many of them gf so I could eat them - regrets, I have them). We're taking all the kids to breakfast to celebrate my birthday on Sunday. More food. My poor waist line.

I so love the cousin party idea. I have chuckled when you've shared about it before. I think our gang would have a blast doing that. Our attendance numbers moving forward might be significantly impacted, but that remains to be seen. I saw that drum challenge video on my fav local news program (light on news, but lots of laughs) - it was a video excerpt from a school competition. The funny gifts are a trip. I bought a bunch of funny stickers and distributed them to all of the nieces and nephews on my side a few different Christmases when I hosted. It was so unexpected, so the kids got a big kick out of it. This year I did it again and the stickers didn't arrive on time. Go figure. Just as well seeing as not everyone deserves a sticker (or if they did, it would've been a totally different version of what I bought, like Go jump . . . )

    1. I forgot that your birthday is so close to Christmas. Happy Birthday! Breakfast out is fun, but yeah, it's just more food. Hope it's lots of fun!

Wasn't the drum challenge so funny? It's crazy how you think it would be easy if you just count, but it really isn't. And yes, our numbers (of cousins and their parents) are much lower than they could be. My in-laws had 5 children, 13 grandchildren and now 7 great grands (that we know of! HA!) but our party only includes 3, 8 and 5 of those numbers, plus spouses (like me!) It's crazy to think that my son (youngest) barely remembers some of his cousins, since we slowly started disconnecting around 2002. Anyhow, I hope your 2026 is a good one! XO

  11. I'm drooling over every single dish in your International Week. What a fun way to enjoy the holidays! And even though I despise the song because it's been overplayed to death, I feel like I need to give Whitney Houston a listen and see how close I can come to nailing the beat.

I'm hoping for a few more big snowstorms before even beginning to think about summer, but I've always been odd that way. :)

    1. It was a yummy week, for sure. I was never a Whitney Houston fan, but she really could belt it out. The challenge was harder than one would think. I'll send my snow your way!

The gingerbread house looks great and the memory angels are very special ...

  13. This whole post feels like equal parts cozy and wiped‑out, which is pretty much the perfect summary of the holidays.

Middle Child’s gingerbread house and your memory angels both got me—one proud tradition and one really tender new one; those shirts-turned‑angels are such a beautiful way to keep your mom present.

Your Cousin Party sounds like pure controlled chaos in the best way; the Whitney drum challenge and Santa Auction are genius, and way more fun than a standard white elephant. Also love your brother‑in‑law’s ongoing tradition of secret weird gifts—built‑in Easter eggs for Future You to discover when you least expect them. Here’s hoping 2026 brings more of that kind of joy and a lot fewer bomb cyclones. HNY, Bijoux!!

  14. Your brother-in-law is hilarious, but the candles sound nice! So fun about all the food from different countries, your husband coming up with wacky white elephant gifts, but most of all you hosting cousin day is amazing. So. Much. Fun! Well done. The prizes and exchanging and the games... Very impressive. As is your daughter's gingerbread house! And good for you on the dolls. I'm also not crafty, so very nicely done. :)

    2. Random student gifts! I fully understand that. :P

  16. You had a very eventful holiday, it seems! So many wonderful memories made with family. I love the white elephant auction game. I'll have to remember that one for next year. And that baby doll I am sure is going to be a treasured gift for years to come.

Now I totally want to gather the family and try our hands at the Whitney Houston beat! I bet it is hard to do!

I haven't packed up my holiday decor yet. I set it out late and am enjoying it for another week, then it will go back in the attic next week when my husband heads down to Florida. I'll do a deep clean of the house then so I can already be ahead of spring cleaning for the year.

    Happy New Year!

  18. Thanks, Bijoux, for sharing this post holiday catch-up and it looked like a lot of fun family time and great food too. The angels wearing pieces of your late mother’s favorite shirts was a wonderful way for your loved ones to always remember her, especially at the holidays. I also decorated with several items that belonged to my late mom. White elephant gift exchanges can be fun and we did one as well at our dominoes-playing group with the “rule” being something recycled from a previously received gift or something bought but not liked/used. One of our received gifts will be recycled next year😏 We also did a holiday buffet and invited fellow neighbors. Our un-decorating will be done this week…or next as we still enjoy the lights nightly. Happy New Year🎉🥂

    1. I was really pleased with how the angels turned out and isn't it nice to see items around the house that belonged to our loved ones? My daughter had a white elephant exchange with a high school club one year and received two enamel snowmen that I actually get out every January, so you never know when you might like another person's discards. Sorry your received gift was not one of those :) LOL!
