Let's Talk Tuesday: A Girl Walked into a Bank Four Times in One Week

What a couple of weeks I've been having. About a month ago, I received notice that one of the banks we use was bought out (or whatever it is that banks do) by another. I immediately knew there would be some sort of issue, as these transitions are never smooth. Or maybe I'm manifesting my own problems now?

I received a new ATM card in the mail, followed up with a new PIN number. In order to activate it, you had to go use it. My first attempt just gave me a series of invalid responses, so I walked inside the bank to get some help. Multiple people were consulted and phone calls made. It was determined that the wrong account number had been linked to my ATM card. Honestly? Shouldn't all this be computerized? How is a mistake like that even made? I can only hope that someone else isn't using an ATM card and gaining access to my account. Sheesh. They told me I'd have to wait 24 hours and then try again.

Two days later, I returned. Still not working. Went inside the bank again, new people made more phone calls, and I was told that this bank 'doesn't do ATM cards, only debit cards.' So, WHY did they send me a card that says ATM on the front? Apparently, I was grandfathered in, they made some adjustments, and I'd have to try again in 24 hours.

Upon returning home, I decided maybe I should read all the paperwork involved with our accounts that came in the mail. I wasn't happy to then notice that Middle Child's account would now receive a $25 service fee. The only way around it was to open up a linked checking account. She does not need a checking account.

Back to the bank I returned, with my third attempt at the ATM machine. Still getting invalid account responses. Went inside to report this and was then told that even though it was a savings account linked to the ATM card, I should be touching the checking account button instead. Quelle surprise, that actually worked and I was able to withdraw some cash. But I still had to deal with my daughter's account. I spent another hour there, opening up a checking account that she will never use with $25 in it. It took forever because instead of just printing out papers to sign, I had to sit there with my phone and get emails sent to me and then figure out how to answer all the questions and sign off on a 5.5 X 2.5-inch screen. Yes, I know I sound old.

I went home relieved, thinking I wouldn't have to enter that bank again for a while. One hour later, I get an email saying that the new checking account was closed due to incomplete documents. This was a Friday late in the day and the bank is not open on Saturday, of course. I won't bore you any longer with what happened when I went back on Monday. It's handled but I do not have any confidence whatsoever in this new bank. None.

Meanwhile, I had to mail a paper tax return for Middle Child, which I did via Certified Mail. This was on March 17, and the tracking system shows that it was never delivered. The last update was on March 23 of 'In Transit to next Facility.' I initiated a missing mail search on it yesterday, as it's been two weeks since mailing. I lost my faith in the US Postal Service years ago, but worrying about the IRS on our case is icing on that cake.

On a positive note, my son and his family will be staying with us over the next week for Easter. We haven't seen them since Christmas, so I'm super excited. Wishing those who celebrate a Blessed Easter and I will catch up with you all in a few weeks.

Comments

  1. What an absolute mess. It's obvious the transition was handled completely incompetently, and the people running the place have zero interest in making it easy for customers to deal with them. And you are right to have no confidence in them going forward. If they messed up all these things, they will mess up other things in the future, and it will be equally difficult to fix.

My suggestion would be to close all your accounts at that bank and take your business elsewhere. Look up reviews of banks and credit unions on the internet and find one that has a lot of satisfied customers. Local ones often do a better job than the big national banks. I've never hesitated to leave a bank when it starts making mistakes or jerking me around.

If the USPS can't find your vanished tax return, you might want to consider trying to file electronically, or perhaps take a copy of the return to a tax prep service and see if they will file it electronically for you (that would cost money, unfortunately).

    1. I've been dealing with bank problems for decades (and have done posts about it in the distant past). And I now have even more experience, due to dealing with my parents' estate. There has only ever been one bank in our area that has been easy to deal with and never made a mistake. We do have an account there, but there are multiple reasons to not have all your cash in one place. I will be looking to leave the bank I wrote about in this post, though. It was just unacceptable.

We do file electronically, but my daughter has a special needs trust and the documents we have to file for her are not able to be done electronically. It's stupid that it can't be done, as the IRS promotes filing electronically, but that's the government for you!

Thanks for your early morning comment and I hope you have a wonderful week!

  2. What a chaotic situation. How in tarnation does the bank screw up their own accounts? I would have yanked my accounts out of there - you're more patient than me! Did anyone even apologize?
As for the tax form, smart move in using certified mail. ( Though sometimes I wonder if just chucking the envelope with a regular stamp into a mailbox would work better?). I assuming it's a trust thing that you have to mail in. I needed to do that last year when my daughter's trust won a raffle at my kid's school. A lot of hassle for what turned out to require no payment anyways. Next time I'm just putting her name on the raffle.
I hope you have a lovely visit with family!

    1. Yes, I received multiple apologies. If it wasn't such a hassle to close accounts (my daughter's is where her pay is deposited) I would have definitely done it immediately. And you're correct, the paper filing has to do with her special needs trust. I can only imagine the hassle you went through with your daughter winning a raffle. It's so ridiculous to have to file forms when no taxes are due, but we go through that with something called RITA (Regional Income Tax Agency) here. I hope you have a great weekend! Thanks for commenting! If you ever start a blog, please let me know.

  3. Oh this makes me want to scream! So I can't even imagine how frustrated and mad you must be! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH (that's me screaming). WHY. Why can't things just work???? In this day and age, how do mistakes like that happen - and incomplete documents??? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (screaming again, into the void). My faith in the postal service is low. Canada Post has been on strike so many times and it's just always such a mess. Things are fine now, but for how long? Basically I feel like if I'm mailing something, I'm just putting a message in a bottle into the ocean and hoping for the best. So I totally understand. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (more screaming)

    1. The incomplete document thing was mind blowing. I was in a separate office and there was a bank manager and two associates all helping to set up this new checking account!!! I'm so sorry to hear about all the Canadian Post strikes. It would be maddening to not get your mail. I will no longer have the USPS mail me my license plate tags, after it took 2 months last year to get mine. I was worried for weeks! And the scary thing is that for some things, like a passport, you don't have a choice. UGH!

  4. Oh my goodness---how frustrating is that? I'm thinking you might want to switch banks and perhaps use a more locally based bank? I've heard that is usually the better way to go.

I had a good laugh at you thinking you've manifested your own messes! HA. I had some crazy stuff happen lately, but then I was like, did I make that happen? AND then I realized i was gaslighting myself! I've never been gaslit by anyone except myself!

Good luck with the IRS mail thing. Beyond frustrating.
Enjoy your visit with your family. Happy Easter!

    1. Well, the bank that it used to be was about the most local bank we had!!! So mad that this new place came in and ruined everything for us! OMG - YES! I think I gaslight myself too!!! Anxiety will do that to a person, right?? Happy Easter! Hope the Easter bunny makes an appearance for your new grandson :)

  5. I am SO sorry you had to deal with this obviously totally incompetent bank and the USPS too. I have also lost almost total faith in them as well. I am seeing more and more how difficult everything is now, and I just do not understand it. You would think with the technology we have things would be easier instead of more difficult. I can't tell you how many times I've been so frustrated like this and asked TBG why is everything so damn difficult now?
I am so happy to hear your family will be together for Easter. I hope you have a wonderful holiday!!

    1. You nailed it, Lori!!! It makes no sense that everything is more difficult, now that we have technology. It should be easier, right?? I can still picture going to a bank and opening a new account with someone with a typewriter! It was honestly so much easier then. Same with cash registers and just using cash!
We are excited to all be together for the holiday. I hope you and TBG have a great weekend!

    You certainly didn't!

Also sorry to read about your mail situation. Grrrrr!!!!

  8. "as these transitions are never smooth."---- OMG, that is sooooooooo true! And don't you love how careless and not at all CLEAR these companies are when going through a transition? It really makes the public feel insecure, especially when it comes to a bank and your money.

Several years ago, my debit card suddenly stopped working. My bank (who I've been with for TWENTY-FIVE YEARS) said that the cause was a faulty chip. I couldn't tap or even insert to use it. Then, when they issued me a new one, it didn't work AGAIN. Finally, after several weeks, they fixed it. And up until that point, I had never had a single issue with my bank.

" Middle Child's account would now receive a $25 service fee." ---- what!?!?! And don't you love with this insane economy that we're going through, companies are INCREASING everything, and also adding hidden fees?

I cannot (actually, I CAN) believe what you had to go through with your bank to get this fixed. And I sure hope they did.

And let's not even talk about how horrendous the postal system is. I dread anytime I have to go into a post office EVEN FOR STAMPS. The postal workers all look unhappy and act grumpy. At least the ones in Philly are that way. They're horrendous.

And yippeeeeeeeee about your son and his family coming for Easter. I bet you are so happy! Have a wonderful time! And Happy Easter to you, dear friend! X

P.S. You and I need to start a blog on how shitting customer service is.

    1. Yes, yes, yes on these transitions. And instead of sending us their useless privacy policies, why not send us what we really need to know, like the addition of these hidden fees! It's so ridiculous that in order to avoid it, they had to waste their own time and now money (with an additional mailing of the checking account statement every month that will never change) for Middle Child to have a useless checking account. So stupid!!! I'm sorry you have also had bank card issues. It's beyond frustrating!

Our post office is horrible as well. So much theft happens at that location from their own employees. I have to drive elsewhere if I want to mail a greeting card because the employees will open them to try to get cash or gift cards. My husband's aunt sent him a gift card last year and I saw it in our 'daily digest' online, but it never arrived. So many people have posted online about similar complaints. AWFUL! And when I was there to mail the tax form, I asked if I could get some smaller denomination stamps (my mom had a bunch of old stamps I want to use up) and they had NONE. This is a huge post office, too. CRAZY! They didn't even have postcard stamps.

I hope your Easter is a peaceful one, Ron! XO

  9. My God, what an ordeal! I could've sworn this was the 21st Century where crap like this isn't supposed to happen.

Banks and the Post Office are probably two of the most hated institutions on earth and you got double-teamed. Yikes!

And, oh, how I love the $25 "service" fee. There are service fees for just about everything we do nowadays. Too bad the service still sucks.

Great news about your son and his family coming for the holiday. Happy Easter to you and yours!

    1. Yes! I do believe that banks and the USPS are the most hated institutions, at least in the US. So much runaround. I do not remember ever having any issues with either, back when I was a kid or in my twenties. Remember when banks used to give you gifts to open up accounts?? I have a very nice crystal vase to prove it! Wishing you and your sister a wonderful Easter, Rob.

  10. What an incredible mess. Yes, it looks like the bank transition was quite ineptly handled and nobody quite knew what they were doing. So technology was meant to make our lives easier. Ha ha. Our local Northern Irish bank has always been extremely reliable and efficient and fortunately not taken over by another bank. I hope you manage to sort everything out and don't have to waste much more time correcting the bank's mistakes.

    1. Things are never the same once a larger institution comes in and swallows up local ones. I hope your bank remains untouched. Technology has made my life increasingly difficult. I'm ready to go back to car keys and the typewriter! Happy Easter, Nick!

  11. When I got this new doctor of mine they wanted me to do everything on my phone. I said I didn't have a smart phone only a landline home phone. So they would either have to print out the papers and have the doctor wait while I filled them out or email me. They said they couldn't do either, they ended up printing them out. I have a cell phone but I refuse to try and fill out documents on it, not doing it. He believed me when he saw that I did indeed have a landline phone here.

That's just ridiculous. Technology has made things so difficult. My parents didn't have cell phone or internet. They had to fill out paperwork whether the places liked it or not.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That was SO smart to tell them you don't have a cell phone. I hate giving out my cell phone number to doctor offices, banks, etc. None of our info is ever secure! One thing I did learn is that you never have to give your SSN to medical offices. I always leave it blank. I'm glad you got the paper forms to fill out instead. So much easier! My parents had so little computer experience before they developed dementia. They were not able to use email or go online and medical offices, etc. never seemed to get it. I find it hard to believe there aren't a lot of people 80+ who can't do that stuff.

  12. Bank fees have gotten ridiculous. To date, our bank is still in operation. We get free checking only because we've been with them over 20 years (grandfathered in). We no longer get free checks, but are only charged 1/2 price. So few checks are written now it's not much. I guess we need to figure out what we would do if this bank merged to avoid the hassle you experienced. Enjoy Easter with your family.

    1. It's a miracle they grandfathered you in to the free checking. I'm so tired of these mergers. We have so few choices because of it! Happy Easter!

  13. You did have a run around situation for sure, Bijoux, and just reading about all the hoops your had to go through was exhausting. Did you consider moving to an entirely new bank and not the one bought out? Perhaps, this might have involved even more effort but I was wondering if there was a more established bank in your area and maybe one that didn't charge that service fee for your daughter's account. We use a local credit union which has been established here for many years, and also online banking through Capital One.

Also, you are right on with your assessment that the banking system and the USPS have gotten worse over the years. The postal system's escalating costs are discouraging rather than encouraging people to send cards and letters. I still send both, but have cut down in recent years.

    1. My daughter has a trust, which makes things more complicated. We could start over somewhere new, but it would take time, plus the effort of having her get the forms at work for a new direct deposit (which for her, without me there to guide her, is difficult and angst-ridden for her). I'm taking a wait and see approach to see how it goes from here.

I also send cards, but still have a boat load of the forever stamps, so I haven't felt the pain yet.

  15. I'd have changed banks with great quickness. There's no excuse for all that rigamarole. (Said the person who put herself through college working at a bank.) A new banker would help with any transitions you had to make. Trust me, they want your money.

Anyway--so sorry for the frustrating times you've had. I feel as if there are going to be plenty more on the horizon, unfortunately.

    1. It's such a hassle to change banks when both a trust and direct deposit are involved. I'm going to wait it out and see if there are any other issues before jumping ship. I'm just exhausted from dealing with my mom's estate for the past three years. And yes, none of this is going to improve.

  16. I guess I don't understand the difference between a debit card and an ATM card. I always assumed they were the same thing. In any case, what a fiasco. I hate dealing with banks! (So does Tara...and she's in the industry.)

  17. What a bureaucratic nightmare!! And the whole thing about having to wait for the emails instead of just physically signing papers is so absurd. 18. What a hassle! I can see why you would have no confidence in that bank! Several years ago I had the same issue with mailing something to the IRS. When it wasn't shown as delivered when it was supposed to be and not for several days later, I started making phone calls. I think I called all over the country and ended up talking to someone in Utah. Finally I was told that it was delivered on time just not updated in their system! Gah! I also went to the post office and got a refund,, You should do that too if you haven't already! Hope you enjoy the time with your son and family!

  19. Oh, I would have been livid after visit 2. Enough so, I would have closed my account and went elsewhere. I used to put up with a lot of nonsense, but I think somewhere in my 40's my idgaf ticker kicked in and I snap at the slightest inconvenience. My husband though has always been a no nonsense dealer. I remember once he spent all day at the car lot negotiating a price of a vehicle. Finally, all of the paperwork came up and somewhere there was a $200 discrepancy. The dealer thought it was no big deal (it really wasn't, just the principal that they charged a bit more than agreed upon.) They refused to budge figuring Jason had spent all day there, he would give in and just pay them $. As he was walking out the door they said "You're really going to walk away over $200?" He said, "You're really going to lose a nice sale over $200? We're done here." I'm sure there are a lot of times he's seen as abrasive or rude, but I am finding I hate being a doormat more than I hate being perceived as rude and started calling people on their BS. That bank needs to get their act together or I am sure they're going to lose a few customers.

I hope you had a great visit with your son and his family!

I don't like to make a scene, so I'm often hesitant about doing things like that. I'm giving a wait and see approach to the bank, mostly because I'm too lazy to go through the hassle of changing bank's with Middle Child's trust. We are having a nice week! I hope your Easter was a good one.

  20. Oh Wow, what a mess. I can see why you have no confidence in this new bank. And right you are when one bank buys another one out or takes over things never go well. Years ago we had a situation where bank 1 bought the debt from bank 2 without notifying the people who had loans. So, when you had a question about the loan and tried to reach the people you had signed the paper work with, they no longer existed. I feel for ya and hope things improve. Glad you have a visit with your son to help take your mind away from the mess for awhile.

  21. Dealing with a bank merger is enough to test anyone's patience, but four trips in one week is truly over the line. It is mind-boggling that in 2026 we still have to press "Checking" for a savings account or deal with paperwork that "auto-closes" an hour after you sign it. You certainly don't sound old for wanting a system that actually works; navigating those tiny screens for legal documents is a hassle for everyone!

I truly hope that certified letter turns up soon so you can put the IRS worries behind you. On the bright side, having your son and his family over for Easter sounds like the perfect way to forget about bank tellers and postal tracking numbers for a while. Enjoy that precious family time and the excitement of having everyone under one roof again.
