I'm Mad At My Favorite Store

Kohl's is my favorite department store. I like not having to go to the mall. I like being able to park close to the door. I like that things are always on sale. I've returned items 8 months later, with no problem. And, I like getting coupons in the mail...........

Fellow Kohl's fanatics, you know the feeling you get when one those sale catalogs with the little peel-off sticker arrives? Mine came a few weeks ago. I carefully and prayerfully peeled it off and lo' and behold, the grand prize of all Kohl's coupons......yes, the coveted 30% off! I was ready to jump up and down, until I read the fine print.....and would you believe the coupon had expired the week before? Some unkind words came out of my mouth and I prepared myself for a customer service battle. You see, I have been receiving my Kohl's ads/coupons late for the past few months, but an expired 30% off was the proverbial straw for me.

First, I went to my nearest Kohl's "customer service" (big air quotes here, folks)counter to show them my coupon and tell them the date it was actually received. Customer Service Zombie told me that it wasn't Kohl's fault and that there was nothing the store could do. I asked if there was a number I could call. She pointed to the 800 number on the back of the catalog and said, "You could try that."

Naive consumer that I am, I went home and tried the 800 number, only to discover it was just a recording where you give your zip code and they tell you the location of the nearest Kohl's. Thanks. Next, I went online to their website and found an 866 number. After numerous number punching, I finally arrived at a real, live human being. Guess what she said? It wasn't Kohl's fault and that the sole blame lies with my local post office. Like I want to go through this again. Being the person that I am, I told "customer service" lady that I thought since Kohl's PAYS the postage on these catalogs, that they would CARE if their customers received them on time or not. She sort of backtracked and thanked me and claimed that my complaint would be noted and that they would send me a 15% off coupon for my trouble. Can't wait to see the expiration date on that one.

Ah, the mysteries of life. Why is the post office sitting on the Kohl's ads? Is there a disgruntled worker who is also angry with Kohl's? Is my mailman secretly peeling off stickers while he sits at the end of the street in his mail truck and stockpiling them? Or maybe the mailman is just mad at me for not giving him his two foot clearance around the mailbox during the last snowstorm in March (see photo).

  1. Blame it on the postal worker. Totally.

We had a HUGE problem with the post office in New Orleans before we moved. It was nuts. Those people are so incompetant.

  2. In my entire Kohls card carrying life, I have only gotten one 30 percent off coupon, and then I couldn't even find what I wanted when I went to use it!

I did get a grand opening sale coupon in the mail last week. Twenty percent off, which is even rare now, too.

Sigh...I'm always the bridesmaid, never the bride with Kohls!

  3. A Kohl's opened down the street from me a few months ago. Got some kind of grand opening coupon in the mail, but I haven't been in the store YET, lol.... not a big shopper here, y'see. ;)

But, I'm thinking it was indeed the post office's fault.

  5. i think we must share postal workers. i never had such bad service until i moved 5 years ago. now my mail goes all over the neighborhood and i never know whose mail is going to show up in my mail box.

post office's fault but yes, you were right to point out to the kohl's rep that it is costing them money and loosing them sales to send out things that no one benefits from.

  6. Mama D - I'd agree with you on the incompetency of postal workers, but I'm afraid they'll withhold my Xmas cards this year.

FADKOG - Yes, I remember your post about the 30% coupon. Didn't you buy that pedegg thing with it?

LB - You have never been to Kohl's?? It IS the place for those who hate shopping! See my opening remarks in the post! And THANKS for the bloggie award. But you know I won't be following the rules either.

Lime - Our mailman is dyslexic as well. Can't distinguish between 4925 and 4295, so we play the drive around the neighborhood and collect your mail game too.

  7. I think its Kohl's playing the nice guy but hoping that it'll sit on your desk long enough that you won't notice it was expired when it arrived. You go back thinking they're so generous, they get your business without honering their coupons.
Ooops... I'm sounding too cynical... The economic bailout is messing with my head.
