Some of you were surprised that my kids did not seem to care for my hip musical taste here. You are not alone! Husband seems to think that he and I are "cool parents" because we listen to Top 40 stations and are generally in touch with current musical trends. He would be wrong!Sure, we are nothing like our own parents. We don't subject our kids to easy listening stations or the musical genius of Herb Alpert, Elvis, Andy Williams or the Glen Miller Band. However, any attempt to play a little Queen, Ian Hunter or ELO is met with eye rolling and sighs of boredom. And if I should happen to stop on an 80's station just to catch a little DuranDuran or Prince, my kids are ready to bail on me. In fact, the two younger ones have spent hours compiling a list they like to call "The Top 100 Worst Songs" of which they revise every summer in times of boredom. Songs like U2's "Vertigo," Queen's "Bicycle Race" and the Police's "Message in a Bottle" rank right up there on their list. And wouldn't you think that a band like the Killers would be something I could share with my youngsters? I mean, they're current! Nope. I can't tell you how many times I've been mocked for singing along to "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6ERe23kSBM (sorry folks, it wouldn't allow me to upload to the blog). Oh, and this retro black and white video? WACK to my kids.
So, what is it they like, you ask:
1. It's got to be by someone that includes "Lil" or "Big" in their name.
2. Z's are good in the name too..........as in Jay-Z and Jeezy, along with the grillz on their teeth.
3. In the song, it must use terms like "G" and "Shorty" when refering to their peeps.
4. Anything by Akon or Chris Brown or Rhianna = GOOD! Doesn't matter if the song was stolen from the 80's - they make it better!
5. Videos involve people leaning over while singing, with multiple odd movements of hands/fingers.
So, if you think you're cool with your Dave Matthews Band or David Bowie, think again.
Peace Out!
Oh, I am cool with my Elvis and Jimmy Buffet and whatnot.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me, I'm cool.
Additionally, it seems every artist must have a "...and featuring INSERT LONG LIST OF OTHER RAP ARTISTS AND/OR JUST T-PAIN HERE" following their name on a track.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, if these kids today would just really listen to old school Prince, half these arguments we have would be moot!
Just how far out of date will I be when the kids get old enough to figure out what kind of music they like? I know I'll still be listening to my 80's music, and 70's progressive (Pink Floyd, Doors, etc).
ReplyDeleteMama - Keep right on telling yourself that!
ReplyDeleteFADKOG - I've noticed these hip hoppers do tend to need company when performing their songs. And Prince? Musical Genius! I don't think he's gotten enough credit over the years.
Russ - I've heard that boys who either play guitar for real or Guitar Hero actually like Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, etc. I'm guessing because hip hop don't do bass guitar? But my sympathies to you if you are still in the Wiggles stage.
my kids must be wierd, all three of them love queen, and lynyrd skynyrd. my middle child is a rabid elvis fan.
ReplyDeletenone of them appreciate the police or prince though, sadly. my son has recently discovered simon and garfunkel though which pleases me greatly. the boy and i also have been known to rock out to warren zevon when he comes on the car radio.
ask your kids for me, does zz top qualify as cool? it has TWO z'z in the name!
btw, i am a big prince fan but i have to say his attitude lately has me wanting to smack him upside the head.
ReplyDeleteBlissfully we are not in the Wiggles stage, but that may be because it has never made it onto my TV (we don't let him out of his room until 8am, and he only watches one hour of TV).
ReplyDeleteLime - No love for the ZZ Top, but I do love a sharp dressed man. And yeah, love the Prince music; not so much a fan of the person.
ReplyDeleteRuss - You will have lived a blessed life if you make it through parenting without the Wiggles.
queen & 80's music rule the hizzouse!
ReplyDeleteC'mon, seriously, The Killers aren't cool?? Some of their songs we featured on Rockstar Supernova?? I didn't know it got more 'real' then that.
ReplyDeleteThankfully I am not at that stage with my kids, if we put on GNR or ZZ Top my kids will air guitar with the best of 'em.
If their is one thing I've learned it that the music you once mocked, the music your parents forced you to once listen to when you'd rather be listening to New Kids on the Block, is the music that takes you back to your parents. I love the 'oldies' like Marvin Gaye, Louis Armstrong, etc. Once what felt like torture now sounds like heaven.
LOL, so they'd like lil ole ME? lol
ReplyDeleteThe kILLERS are So cool. Are so!
(I'll argue that one w/the kids, by golly!!!)
.... so, I think I get it --- if it's by a black artist or is Rap, they like it, anything else is fluff. Is that it?
pffft, kids nowadays just need to broaden their musical tastes, that's all. lol
Carrie - well, not this hizzouse, but thanks for commenting!
ReplyDeleteJody - we are destined to repeat our parents' mantra...."what is that noise you are listening to and why can't I understand the lyrics?"
Lil Bit - LOL....I was thinking 'bout you when I wrote that post! Yeah, they'd probably like anything with your name on it! Of course, you'd need to break out the bling. But yeah, you've got the picture...rap, hiphop, etc. is the only stuff my son listens to. I will admit, my girls have a bit more variety in their cd collections. Just a Lil Bit!
Dunno if I could break out the bling, or wear my pants under my ass, lol .... but I can krimp like nobody's bizness! lol ;)
ReplyDeleteRemember Kid and Play, Young MC and Tone Loc? And those are just the people I can recall. Think of the hundreds I've forgotten since 1991.Most of this year's popular Rap artists will be valet parking for next year's popular Rap artists. They have a shelf life of about 8 months.
